Well if what I read on one of the forums (sorry I can't remember which, may have been Tom's) by a person claiming to be a former Seagate employee is true? Seagate suckage makes sense and moreover we now know WHY it happened all of a sudden.

Here is the skinny, according to the insider when Seagate bought Maxtor instead of Seagate making Maxtor better? It brought Seagate down to Maxtor levels. You see Maxtor had these ARM controllers that were dirt cheap to crank out, catch was you had to keep 'em in 5400 RPM drives (and even then they better be well ventilated) because if they got hot 1+1 could equal anything from 1-5 and so the controller would lose its little mind and forget where the end of the drive was and the drive geometry. Of course all the Seagate execs saw was $$$ on how much they'd save on the cost of manufacture so they started using them on ALL Seagate drives and...you know the rest. The reason why you can see a dozen shitty and one good in every batch is that when they run low on the shitty Maxtor chips they will occasionally use some of the more expensive Seagate chips, hence the pearl among the poop.

But after reading that it all made sense, the sudden plummet in quality, why drives below 750GB are good (those chips are based on the old Seagate chips and code) and why we see a good one among the crap, you get lucky on the ARM lotto. It all sadly makes sense, just more short sighted corporate douchebaggery.

He asked the class "What do you notice about this code that is "different" than what I have taught you?" and some girl in the back said "Why is all the lines numbered, and what is a GOTO?" and he laughed and said "Back in the days you would number lines of code and use the GOTO to jump between bits of code because it cut down on memory usage. If you didn't know what you were doing it would blow up in your face but if you did it was VERY efficient. This style of coding went out of style when the old BASIC computers quit being sold in the late 80s so that is how I knew he was lying, a Win98 user wouldn't write code in that manner". He then looked at the code for a second and said "Atari or Commodore?" and I laughed and said "VIC20 but how did you know?" and he laughed and said "Atari and Commodore BASIC lent itself to that particular coding style, efficient as hell but as subtle as a chainsaw". But the funny part is you can take the old Commodore BASIC syntax and it runs great on VB6, I was able to breeze through the class by just reliving my days on the VIC...no PEEKing and POKEing though sadly.

Yeah my exp in the shop puts Seagate consumer right at the bottom. If the rumor is true you can blame Maxtor because when Seagate bought Maxtor instead of bringing Maxtor up to Seagate quality it brought Seagate down to Maxtor levels of shitty.

Sorry that I can't remember where in the hell the thread was but on one of my many rants about dealing with shitty Seagate on one of the forums (may have been Tom's, can't remember) someone that claimed to be a former engineer at Seagate chimed in and what he said? Sounded right and explained what I was/am seeing with newer Seagate drives. He said when they bought Maxtor they got the uber cheap to make Maxtor ARM controllers and started slapping them on their drives...but the catch was Maxtor was using them on slow speed drives because the chips were extra shitty and would fuck up and start throwing off the tracking cause once hot these chips could return 1+1 = anything from 1 to 4, but their controllers were soo much cheaper than Seagate controllers the suits made them keep 'em.

Anyway he said this is why you'll have Seagate drives fail in bunches while a lucky few will have the same drive and never have a problem, its because when they run low of shitty Maxtor controllers a few consumer drives will end up getting the "enterprise" controllers which is the original Seagate ARM chips. I know I've had to tell customers that any Seagate over 640Gb is a crap shoot which is why the Seagate drives are always on sale, they are so hit and miss it ain't funny.

IMHO the best to worst as far as quality is Samsung (especially the Ecogreen, built like a tank it is), Toshiba, Hitachi, WD, and Seagate.

If I wouldn't have been gifted Bioshock II and Far Cry 3 (which I uninstalled the secon I beat it, Fuck UPlay!) there wouldn't have been a drop of third party DRM on my system, I turned down the Splinter Cell series because of third party DRM, but if you CHOOSE to buy third party DRMed games how is that the fault of Valve? they offered with both GFWL and Gamespy games to help devs switch and because of that both Borderlands 1 and Bioshock 2 still have MP and co-op, hell with Bioshock 2 they even ported over my DLC and stats for GFWL so if anything Valve went above and beyond, its the devs of the other games (cough, EA sucks, cough) that have CHOSEN not to give you what you paid for....so maybe you should take it up with them?

Its not like the pirate version is any better, the only MP you can use is a LAN hack like Gameranger...which you can use on the Steam version as well, you just don't get the players using LANhacks like you do with Steamworks.
