Literally. There is more gold per-ton in old computer parts than gold ore, and its cheaper to extract. so it makes sense given the recent rise of precious metals for apple to salvage as much of these resources as possible. This Free program is probably going to turn a profit.
To be honest I am not so keen on Sony or Microsofts new offerings. They are still running the spec race when it comes to video game performance. All tech industries run this race (computers, digital cameras, and media players) Its part of the way the industry works. every comany wants to flaunt concrete numbers to validate what is ultimately an abstract experience. For computers it was clock speed , for digicams megapixels, for media players hard drive/flash space. But as each of these sectors Matured the spec race has become less relevent (still a factor mind you but not the final say of quality).
so here we have sony and micro$oft bickering over which console can do the most floating point calculations. Gimmie a break IF THE GAMES SUCK THE CONSOLE WILL ALSO SUCK. Ninetedo seems to be the only company who gets this, and I hope that they can pull off some great gameplay and content inovation with the revolution. If so then i think they could easly be the number 2 player in the hardware market, maybe even oust sony for #1.
somehow the idea of paying $5 a month, even for unlimited downloads, is unappealing if i dont actuallly own the music. As much as I hate the nature of DRM at least Apple has come the close to drawing a balance between user control and "artists" rights. as fun as it might be to have unlimited access to music downloads I think the psycological barrier of not actually owning the music will keep most consumers out. At least with iTunes when you buy a song you allways have the option to burn an audio or Mp3 cd.
When was the last time ANYTHING was able to live harmoniously with humans. We seem to be able to live harmoniously with ourselves let alone a peice of animated plastic and circutry
Lets just hope that in a few thousand years religious robots don't try to ban robot evolution in robot schools in favor of seven day robot creationism.

I think what the article comes down to is a question of autonomy vs. automation. the computer in this instance is merely an automated tool created and used by humans for the purpose of creating art. thus any art made with the computer finds its ideoligical origin from human beings. Asking if the computer "created" those images is as absurd as asking if a paint brush created an artists painting. Computers are just tools, However, highly sophisticated tools. One day this may change, but for now no computer has any mor autonomy than a toaster oven.
I was supprised that this article doesn't mention the effect of land use over climate change. One of the fastest ways the increase the local tempeture of an area is to cut down all the trees (raise by 2-3 degrees C). Remember over=grazing of the mid west led to the dust bowl during the great depression. Sadly a lot of developing nations use bad farming practaces, and that is why deserts are the only ecosystems still expanding today.
