The day I can configure a printer in Linux and can access this printer with all the applications, is the day I will call Linux ready for the desktop. Right now, I have three different printer managers, with the same printer, so that my 8-9 apps can print. Granted, this is getting a lot better, but still, you need to make it easier. I think that Xandros is a perfect example of what Linux can do on the desktop. The problem with Xandros is that they make it very hard to install non-Xandros approved apps. I know you can install most Debian apps, but that usually involves some hacks, etc.
There are also rumors that Apple will drop their computer unit and focus on the music side of things. Going as far as being an outlet for the artists, almost like another label, but better.
Google is a GOOD search engine, but not a great one! I think the engines of the future will rely on humans populating them, like DELICIOUS or some of the others out there. This technology works great against spam - IE Cloudmark.
Google uses smart people to solve their problems for them, but this is not something that Google promotes. What happens is, the expecations put on some of the programmers are so high, these programmers seek out help through 'calling on resumes' and pretending that you are being interviewed. In reality you are solving a problem for this person that is stuck. This is something that is gaining popularity amongst google and other employees.
The issue is not the revolution, or the rights, the issue is how a large corporation can manipulate a civilian. So on the surface, it may seem that it's the pirates vs. IP holders. But underneath, you see it go as far as Microsoft suing/jailing you for NOT using Windows - which is the case with SCO and the Linux lawsuit.
"Early reports indicate that we have lost most of our diving equipment and boats. Not all our staff members are accounted for - yet."
Clark seems to suggest he cares about his boats and diving gear more than his staff.
Linux in a GUI environment reminds me of running Windows 3.1 on DOS. The stability is a tad bit better, but suggesting to run Linux in a desktop environment is still two years too early. I mean, you can't even set up a printer (globally) and print from all applications!!
