I believe that the CSS is done in the driver for the Hollywood Plus. I recently had an exchange of e-mails with Sigma Designs, the makers of the Hollywood Plus, about Linux drivers and they said that due to CSS there would be none forthcoming. They also refused to release any information on their products. They did say that a newer product, that cost a mere $200 versus the $60 for a Hollywood Plus, has CSS on the chip and would have Linux suppport.
This announcement is one I have been waiting for, now I just need information on where to get drivers for some of the more feature rich sound cards (MX300 and some of the newer Creative Labs offerings).
Looks like I won't have to put a MS box in the living room after all.

I have written Sigma Designs, the makers of the Hollywood Plus and they said that "no support for Linux will be available for the existing Hollywood Plus" citing CSS Protection. Tech support said that a new product will have Linux support.

I am responding. The injuction in the DeCSS case only prevents the defendants from distributing DeCSS, the judge did not rule DeCSS illegal. So, perhaps it could be used.

This brings up a question in my mind. Is DeCSS illegal, or is it illegal to distribute it. Wasn't the injuction against distribution of DeCSS?

On a side note - What if all the sites that have DeCSS were to encrypt the source? Perhaps allowing some utility to decrypt the source for engineering or compile purposes? Then, if anyone were to use the source in any other manner, i.e. a lawsuit, it may be a violation of DMCA. I know there are details I am missing, but it would be fun to turn DCMA against those using it.

I am a Windows developer, hey I have bills to pay.

(I can feel the flames already)

There are some great things Microsoft has done to make developing powerful applications easier. Their tools are great if you develop for any of their operating systems. I also love COM development. If that sort of component development were available on Linux, and it would have to be for Office to work, I would embrace it whole heartedly. I know that CORBA is on Linux. But there is a bit of flexibility COM provides that CORBA does not. I am hoping that one day either A) CORBA provides similar functionality or B) COM is ported to Linux. I don't see MS doing it without proper incentive.

But hey, a Microsoft divided by antitrust ruling into an applications and operating systems division. That application division may see Linux as a target ripe for the picking. Too bad it won't be Open Source.

How to you show there were damages when the software is free. What amount of money did they cost you not releasing their source

There could be damages if the software is free as in speech, but not as in beer. If the license is such that it is permitted to use it for non-commercial usage for free, but a charge for commercial usage, damages may be able to be shown.
