The article makes a comparison, but in reality these laws are more reflective of the Hague Conventions Laws of War regarding the projectiles fired from a firearm.
yep you're right, terrorists know that blocking access to myspace would scare Americans most at this point. Killing people is you know, a little uncouth.
I would instead focus on scaring Americans into giving up their civil liberties and forcing America to spend more of its budget on internal defense, leaving less money available for outside wars.
Sixteen days after 9/11 my daughter was born, it scared the shit out of me. I wondered if I would be drafted for war, I wondered if she would, one day go to war, I wondered if one day she would have to prepare for terrorist attacks in school, I wondered if she would be snuffed out two weeks into life by some nasty man made virus, I wondered if the virus had already been released and we just didn't know it yet, I thought a lot about my daughter's future and how I would raise her to deal with it. I was thoroughly terrified of the future.
Looking back on all of that I realize that Americans did more to terrify ourselves than the enemy ever could have. We've lost thousands of soldiers and spent billions of dollars in this war on terror and we are only more terrified, it doesn't make us safer, it doesn't keep the power on, we're not flying safer, our water, internet, phones, roads, schools, our children are not safer, and hell we don't even feel safer. It's all at risk now, because we've spent all of our money and time trying to lock things down, keep things safe and protect ourselves from the boogeymen.
Today, my daughter is five, she can read, tie her shoes, and does well with math. She doesn't know what a terrorist is and they don't talk about that in school. Her little brother is also doing great, neither has gone hungry or lonely or cold a day in their lives and we still haven't finished our Y2K rations. They know only one thing about politics and it's that George W. Bush is a dumb ass. They also know what consumerism is and the ways that the TV can affect them.
I'm sick of hearing about terrorists and terrorism. I'm not scared of a terrorist attack and in fact, I'd rather be scared than watch another one of our civil liberties gobbled up by the administration or watch another funeral on the news. I'm so fucking sick of hearing about this "post 9/11" bullshit, that I could scream. We weren't safe "pre 9/11" and there isn't a fucking thing we can do to become safe in a post 9/11 world. Get over it. Life is fragile and raising your children in a bubble will not make them safer. In fact, once they inevitably leave that bubble they will not be able to survive the harsh reality that is "fresh air". So thanks George W. for a nation that cannot move without asking themselves WWTTD? (What Would The Terrorists Do?)
Terrorists would not attack the Internet, they would attack the power grid. This article is IT egoism and paranoia, the physical robustness of our national communications systems should not be questioned unless we expect a prolonged bombing campaign, which incidentally is what the Internet was designed to survive. My personal order of operations would be:
Bomb the power grid
Bomb the freeways
Bomb the phone system
Bomb Cellular towers
Bomb the tv system
Bomb the Radio stations
Bomb the locations that make satellite TV and satellite internet possible
Wrecking the US's communications systems would require a significant industrial expense and commitment, this doesn't come from terrorists.
So cron and tar now have single instancing across various computers? Oh, I thought not.
WIM is a mashup of existing technologies reformulated in to a proprietary format, nothing else. Cron and tar is what I called a hack, I use it for the most important stuff like/home and/etc. I don't need some fancy image space saver because there is never duplicate files in my backups each only backs up what was modified since last week, really simple actually. Just three backups of the stuff most likely to break for the past three weeks.
If they have 3rd party software that works fine too. Mine has McAfee (came with it) and that AV and Anti Spy works fine with it. So do all the others.
Fair enough, but what if I have systems that don't run AV or antispyware, what if I also have a Mac on the network or a Debian box? Sorry, but I can ask questions about this all day.
What if they don't run because the machine has a dependency issue or some other software broke the backup?
All the more reason to use cron and tar or stay in the official repository of your favorite distribution. For home users I suspect the most likely reason for missing a backup will be that the computer wasn't on to begin with. Which will be really annoying when every time they start their computer they get a warning and a slowed network while the backup system commences or even just pokes it's nose around their computer.
No, but it is very nice and it is a lot easier to setup for a real home user than most anything else.
Back to the point, *nix has offered all of this and more for YEARS. The usability aspect can be patched together over Google's summer of code by some moderately intelligent CS sophomore. I'm happy Windows users will be able to poke their noses out of the cave a little bit, but don't go on acting like Microsoft has something *nix doesn't, cause *nix has had it for years and Microsoft's implementation is barely in beta. Microsoft is playing catch up again and calling it innovation, nothing to see here.
You mean technophile CEOs in love with M$ that will have the IT guys come out their house to have this installed, them and fanbois that are sick of being PWND1! by Linux hackers. I can't wrap my head around this being much more than competition for Linux in the hobbyist market or some crapola frontpage for networks.
dd? try mondo or amanda, or even just hack something together with cron and tar.
Sounds really annoying, also what if you use AVG or other 3rd party software?
Again extremely annoying, worthless even. If we're using automated backups and they don't run because the system is off, then there's probably nothing to backup.
This is new?
I'm sorry this does sound kinda cool for a Windows environment, but in the Linux world, WHS looks a day late and a dollar short.
If I bought this for my mom, it would be years before she would loan me money again and that's just not something I'm prepared to do. And if you think she'd buy it on her own, well you don't know my mom.:)
At the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas this week (see my special report), Microsoft previewed its long-awaited Windows Home Server (WHS) product, a Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based server for consumers that dispenses with the complexities of most Windows Server versions and provides the core storage, sharing, and remote access functionality that digital media and home networking enthusiasts require. - Paul Thurrott http://www.winsupersite.com/reviews/whs_preview.as p
I'm sorry, but this OS sounds like a stinking pile of M$ Bob manure. Anyone with an inkling of familiarity with *nix already has this and more for a lot less. Heck it's so bad, I think Microsoft would be better off not exposing it's customer base to this market. The Home server is so easily replaced by a more powerful/flexible Linux implementation that Microsoft is effectively putting a stock '71 pinto in the Indy 500, it's sad, nothing else.
Maybe, I mean why would Microsoft create a Windows Home Server other than to compete with *nix/BSD where it's been done for years.
Repeat after me "Microsoft is not an innovator", again "Microsoft is not an innovator", one more time "Microsoft is not an innovator", do you get it yet?
You're arguing the "Dr. Frankenstien's Monster" aspect of this from a purely religious perspective. Slashdot is filled with scientifically minded people, some religious, some not. Most of us will make our own justifications for the advancement of science, either with religion or without. You're arguing against science on a purely religious basis, you will find very few here that will support your cause. No matter how much any of us believe in god we all unanimously believe in math and science (which I personally believe are God's gifts), arguing against science here is essentially swimming against the tide.
IIRC the problem is with blood circulation, because they actually grow the ear shape in a petri dish then attach it to the mouse, then the mouse is responsible for growing the tissue. So, the problem wouldn't be a foot on the side of your head so much as it would be having a half formed ear begin to rot ala gang green. Then they would have to remove it and try again, I think the cycle is fairly dangerous in just getting the tissue grown properly as the host is immediately exposed to a rather severe and unnatural wound.
Actually, it really boils down to how much I could make as an ear farmer and what the risks were. I would assume they are grown on mice for one of two reasons. a) mice are the scientists beta testers or b) there is an inherint risk in the growth procedure that is deemed irresponsible to burden a human with.
Personally, I won't be standing in line for a job as an ear farmer. I can't fathom the frustration of sitting on 30 ears or so, among other things. Maybe there should be a clause in my will that if I be come overly catatonic to use me for ear farming, but imagine the trauma if I woke up covered in ears. (eek)
Ok, according to moore's law we will get there, with a transistor based computer. I believe the idea is to create the hardware equivelant of a neuron. Something like Asimov's positronic brain. Currently the modern computer is little more than a highly programmable calculator. The idea in this case is to create a computer that can learn or repurpose it's transistors/neurons.
My colleagues and I have been pursuing that approach for several years. We've focused on the brain's neocortex, and we have made significant progress in understanding how it works. We call our theory, for reasons that I will explain shortly, Hierarchical Temporal Memory, or HTM. We have created a software platform that allows anyone to build HTMs for experimentation and deployment. You don't program an HTM as you would a computer; rather you configure it with software tools, then train it by exposing it to sensory data.
The end goal is to create more advanced computers or software. You'd do better venting your religious frustrations against scientists in the genetics industry where the end goal is more advance people or thoughts.
I think he's stating it because open source is not some kind of magic sauce that will make a small startup a resounding succcess overnight, that's a fair thing to state, considering the dot-bomb era.
AI is not to be feared until grafted on to the oozing skull of the transhuman.
The article makes a comparison, but in reality these laws are more reflective of the Hague Conventions Laws of War regarding the projectiles fired from a firearm.
Nice line of thought.
At what point should the Borg have their autonomy taken away?
Apparently they can also target windows boxen at will.
God I wished you were joking! :)
yep you're right, terrorists know that blocking access to myspace would scare Americans most at this point. Killing people is you know, a little uncouth.
You have nothing to fear but fear itself. Now quit being a chickenshit.

Exactly, it's offtopic, mod everyone named Larry Offtopic!

You mean hallucinating, pot slows the resistors, LSD turns all the lights to green and increases the speed limits.
