Why don't we start as a community selling sco short (borrowing their stock from a brokerage house and selling it immediately, then you wait for the price to drop and buy it back, the broker gets his stock back and you get the difference in the price)
1. it is a chance for some of us to make some money off of sco, for a change
2. if the trend is noticed then people will start dumping the stock, thus hurting sco directly and getting our faithful paid back sooner
3. we know for a fact that they are lying through their teeth, trying to bluff the stock price up, this is the best way I know to call that bluff and end their charade
What happened to the idea of power cooperatives? Where I am from there was a time when companies were not interested in providing power, because they didn't think it would return enough on their investment. So the people started a coop, this not for profit now regularly returns it's profits in rebates. It's not just a matter of private vs public, we should be asking why aren't all utilities coops? It insures both the lowest prices and highest service to the customers by closing the gap between the interests of the shareholders and the customers because they are now by definition the same people. Shareholders are no longer able to decide that their monetary gains are worth more than crappy service to people they never met. If an executive wants to remain employed he will maximize service, minimize costs, and not seek outrageous compensation for his efforts.
It's not that I couldn't find the package I wanted, it's that I was relegated to special level of hell where you must resolve dependencies for binary packages.
I got hooked on gentoo because of the bleeding edge factor, I usually have apps built and installed on my machine within a day or two of revs. That is just somehting that I never found with Mandrake.
What does the community think about going after the RIAA this way. Collect some money to do direct mailing of a petition form explaining what is going on to the layman. This form should contain a pledge not to take some action that would make them a profit (somebody smarter than myself should work out the details of what kind of boycot like actions should be threatened) and make sure that the return card is postage paid. Take the threats (pledges) and generate a letter with the names of the signatories attached and send it to the share holders and board of directors of the major music companies explaining that drops in revenue are due to their participation in the RIAA. For the Coup de ta (I can't spell very well in english let alone French) send the exact same letter to as many media outlets as possible. No greater pressure can be applied than a 30 second story on CNBC causing the share price to drop slightly. Remember folks earnings drop, share prices drop, the board is elected by people who own shares, the share holders are unhappy the board is in jeopardy, the board is in jeopardy the executives are in jeopardy, the executives are in jeopardy they modify their behavior.
I would recomend "6 Easy Pieces" and it's follow up "6 Not So Easy Pieces" by Feinman. They give a nice overview of some important concepts and are aimed at the layman (liberal arts major).
We have 2 MS clusters for redudancy and we can't manage to keep them running, they are a turn key Dell solution. We two weeks ago Dell put a guy on a plane from Austin to Indianapolis with 2 hours notice to try to get this thing running. Thank god I am a network guy because our server guys have been spending several DAYS at work with VERY short sleep breaks. Our experience has been if you have something important don't use MS software.
Check into the Tsumami products from Western Multiplex, you will most likely find a solution that will work for you in your price range. http://www.wmux.com/products/index.html
The person you are looking for might have a computer or electrical engineering degree. I am working on my computer engineering degree and can attest for the rigorus mathematical education the curriculum affords. The candidates for these degrees often work on designing and constructing scientific computing systems because they often employ the most pure and bleeding edge ideas in computer science.

"I am not a smart man" as a friend of mine is fond of saying, but I believe that it can best be explained this way. Let us say that we have two processors identical in every way save one is 32 bit and one is 64 bit. A majority of the work of a cpu is not in calculation but rather data transfer. A fetch takes 2 cycles while a write also takes 2 cycles. If we were to write 128 bits of information to disk from memory it would take 8 cycles for the 64 bit machine and 16 cycles for the 32 bit machine. End result: a 32 bit machine has to be clocked 2X the 64 bit machine to keep up in this sort of senario.
