This comment is strangely reminiscent of the fark thread.

Anyways... while his death is saddening, his works will with any luck be around for some time.

Slaughterhouse Five is probably one of the most interesting books I've read. If you enjoy his work you may want to look into Harlan Ellison.

Do people really need to know that RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, or what PCMCIA stands for, as long as they know that the PCMCIA card goes in the PCMCIA slot? A lot of acronyms seem to have more meaning attached to them the simply what the letters stand for. What I am trying to say is that the meaning of the acronyms seems more important then what they stand for.

    I agree.

However, I use ABIword as my primary word processor. It loads faster in both Windows and Linux (for me), it consumes less memory, and the interface is a decent clone of Word, so that others have fewer problems with it when they use my machine.

so... its benefits outweigh its problems for me.

    - Ubuntu is nice due it's quick install.
      - Features also tend to work immidately: I spent three months trying to get a TV tuner working in various Redhat/Fedora Core releases and it never worked properly.
      - The ubuntuguide is another great plus: it is possible to know very little about setting up a linux box, and get Ubuntu doing what you want it to quickly.
      - Debian package management (no more difficult then gentoo package management, without having to wait for it to compile)
      - 1 install CD instead of 3 to 6
      - A great community that makes this a distro one that anyone can eisily download, install, and set up; it is ideal for people who want to migrate, or even for more experenced people who don't want to spend 65% of their time maintaining the computer and the rest actually using it for work or play or whatever.

Now, if they had mplayer packaged such that it installed, and played DVDs correctly without as much effort (i.e. getting the source from the developers and manually compiling it, not that this is difficult, but it should be unneccessary), I would be happier.

Having lived in the detroit area for quite a while, I can back up the parent's post. I know people who work for particular companies, and if they drive the wrong vehicle to work it will get keyed. These companies expect their employees to support the company, and punish those who don't. It makes one wonder if this isn't a cause for some of the problems that the automotive industry has.
