Here is a list I found with references to the fundamental limits on information storage and retrieval. The limits discussed in these references are thermodynamic limits imposed on the system. I'm pretty sure Feynman also discussed this (I found this list by searching on: Feynman computing theoretical maximum.

These are the currently understood maximums for info storage and retrieval, whether these will ever be attainable is a different question but this is what your question 1 asked.

Suggestion one makes a lot of sense.

Suggestion two would seem to help as well but only if there are specific rules about which extension you can file under, otherwise it just opens up a whole new set of domains to exploit by the so called "cyberpirates".

For example say Disney already owns most of the domains closely related to it in the .com, .org name-space. Now .biz, .inc, .sex open up and to protect its intrests and image it feels the need to own these names as well (eg. it doesn't want someone putting up a site on mickeymouse.sex, etc.) this just opens up a new area for people to attempt the exploitation of these trademarks.

Can anyone give any info on the relative merits (and accuracy) of the two different FPU benchmarks used by Tom's and Sharky. The 3D Rendering on Tom's shows a huge difference in favor of the Athalon, while the ZD FPUMark shows the new intel with a slight advantage. This is important to me because we are deciding on a machine to purchase in the next couple of months that will be more or less dedicated to floating point calculations.

  9. Re:Sceptic in Slashdotia on Gaussian Distribution being questioned · · Score: 2

I admit the popular journalism of scientific is lacking (from the articles given here it is really impossible to form any informed opinion about the scientific validity/merit of the work reported on and no references to that work are given) I quickly checked the first name in the article (Donald Turcotte) and indeed he has been published in a number of peer reviewed journals including Science, about self organized critical behavior. What I don't understand is how you can judge whether the scientists involved in this research are doing good work or quackery based on one popular press article and not try to examine the facts before jumping to conclusions. I'm not saying what is described in the articles is right or groundbreaking, what I am saying is that these articles alone don't give nearly enough information to form a reasonable opinion (although I don't have enough time to go and do a full literature review to form an informed opinion either)

Don't blame the scientists for poor reporting.

I was thinking along the same lines, not only would you have a whole new body but you could use your own clone (plus any genetic modifications you wanted to make and could be specified, i.e. just replace the male pattern baldness gene, once it's found, with the gene that doesn't give baldness) if you could wait the 20 or so years needed for your brainless (haha) clone to grow to adulthood (just start the process when you're 25-30)

  12. XFiles could go on without Duchovny on Duchovny to Quit X-Files · · Score: 1

If the writers are up to it the Xfiles should not have to end even if a major character like Mulder/Duchovny leaves the show. Some other shows have lasted a very long time switching main characters rather often (although the format is generally an ensemble cast the Xfiles could migrate to this kind of story rather easily). For example NYPD Blue, Law&Order, ER, and even ST:DS9 all have lost/eliminated some major characters and they can still write a story. This is actually a minor pet peeve I have, why can't SF series stand to lose a major charcter now and then particularly if the actor wants to leave, this could spice up a stale story line by injecting a completly new element into the story. How long can the Xfiles go on with the one major theme of Fox trying to find the truth about his sister's disappearence, maybe a new main character introduced could expand the govt conspiracy in a different direction and, yes, change the series, but possibly for the better.
