There is room for both but you need smart people to make the best decision for the problem. Competitive advantage wouldn't exist if the Amazon's and Walmarts didn't build what they needed rather than rely upon COTS. COTS solutions are never pushed to a 100%, more likely about 20% to 30% of the functionality is leverage and then modified extensivly into a custom built app that can't be upgraded. The best thing one can do while evaulating COTS solutions is to attend the vendors training class before you even make a decision on packages or potential build solution. Most companies can't afford the time/money/resources to build proof-of-concepts.
But even if you choose a path to buy or build if you don't have a few smart people and leadership you might as well plan for failure. Leadership and methodology cannot be overlooked and this requires smart people who understand the business issues. Not that everybody has to be smart, but the chiefs had better have a clue to manage the indians.
Agree P2P is here to stay, but it will be improved beyond what Hollywood will ever control. It took years of courtroom battle fighting to think they could stop MP3's yet they pull there heads out and cater to what the consumer wants (itunes, musicmatch, etc) for a cost effective pricepoint. So these greedy bastards now want more control, more money, more govt. power to tell the consumer how you will spend your hard earned, over taxed dollars upon.
How these senators become elected is beyond belief, obviously their own communities must be perfect while they have time to tackle world issues. Stick to your own city, fix education, the potholes, and protect the citizen's.
DVR is not going away except your $$ from Tivo to the cable companies. Once they have you locked in it will only be a matter of time your cable company can charge you $13/mo for DVR service.
When is it cheaper to build a MythTV or whatever other open source setup on pc hardware vs. a $70 Tivo box? $70 for a dedicated box which you couldn't come close to building yourself. For the cost of a PC w/tuner and say mythtv, that would equal a tivo and 2 years worth of subscription to equal out in costs. Not the mention the time to manage that pc with viruses, spyware and whatever else.
No doubt Tivo has blown partner opportunities but the worst is not staying technically savvy. I mean how tough would it have been to offer cheaper subscription rates, referrals, and make the box have simple expandable storage. They have this huge communitiy of people but ignore this customer base's needs and improvements. I think of Tivo like AOL, greedy.
Unfortunately improvements have come a little too late thats terrible being the pioneer. Screw Hollywood and there concerns and focus on the customer, remember they pay your bills..
It seems obvious the guy was an idiot but unlikely a terrorist. If he were that I would suspect he would have been hanging around the airport in direct view of pilots landing.
Secondly, I can't wait for the lawyers to become involved for the passengers. Let's say I'm looking out the window and I'm flashed, can I sue the airliner now for not providing reasonable protection against a potential threat to me?
I was at costco last week and they had a 10 million candlelight powered flashlight. I'm pretty sure this thing could lightup the entire plane at 8000 feet so is a flashlight an issue now?
What if I painted a plane at 30,000+ ft totally by accident if at all possible, is that also a terrorist act? What's next, somehow I painted your gps satellite?
I think the guy should be treated as if he was on the plane himself and interfering with the cockpit crew.
It's interesting to see how the govt. likes to make examples of terrorist acts with our own U.S. citizens such a public display yet the real dangers are rarely discussed until the crisis has occurred.

If apple would just release a 9" black/white monitor to sit on top this you would almost have the original mac...)
