I'm not sure what it says about human nature. I'm rather afraid to explore that.
While there is no one cause of the problem, the school system is most certainly a big factor. Teachers are not allowed to teach smart kids at their level. Instead they have to dumb down the courses so that "no child is left behind." This is taking egalitarianism way too far. If teachers were allowed to teach differently to different students we would certainly do better. But, no, that would be "favoring" some and "unfair." Reality check, please.

One gentleman stood up and made the observation that if you travel around the world you will find Chinese restaurants, Italian restaurants, French, Thai, Korean, Vietnamese, you name it. But never never an English restaurant. The point is obvious.
Not necessarily a bad commentary. You won't find American restaurants either (well I hardly think McDonalds counts in the edible food category), but I've eaten at many a natural foods restaurant in the US that was delicious. For a time they categorized some of these as "California Cuisine", but the name evidently didn't stick.

I vaguely recall performance comparisons between Ruby and Java, and that Java was significantly faster. True or no?
