Ya know...focused e-mail marketing (UCE in compliance with CAN-SPAM) is very effective.
I do this a few times a year to customers (and people that expressed interest in products we make).
We tend to offer a pretty sweet deal in the e-mail and find the e-mails to be very successful (and no complaints to my knowledge).
Where are the farm animal midget monkey sex sites going to advertise?
Take away spam and they'll just be some guy in a trench coat on a street corner handing out little paper flyers for "monkeygibletsandbjoobies.com".
In the end...the animals lose. The horses will go back to being turned to glue, the pigs will be ham, and the monkeys...well, they'll still just be monkeys.;)
It exists...check out the MediaPortal project (http://mediaportal.sourceforge.net/).
Well, this is everything but #1...but as a Slashdot reader I'm sure you have no qualms about putting together an elegant little box. If you want to drop some real cash...check out cases from the german manufacturer "Hush". They're awesome.
Nice story.:-)
Now for the kicker...you have to sleep at night knowing that your neighbors can't set a password on the WiFi router...hopefully, they can call emergency services should your house be on fire.;-)
Between these two sites I keep a big business (living in the shoes of a small one) running smoothly.
My tricks...
- Invest in a quality UPS (not only gives high uptime but with line conditioning...even cheap parts work well with clean power)
- At least RAID-1 with a quality controller (I know at anytime...24 hours a day if an array member goes south)
- Test, test, test. If you're building your own boxes take the time to push the hardware in a lab before it gets pushed in production. Prime95 anyone?;-)
I have one server from the "big guys"...and that's only because they do good on 1U boxes (although I built a hot spare for my $3500 HP with $400...).
The series 2 units all run MIPS.
Gracias! The math server is pushing this out to me now. You've got some shiny mirrors there!
Thank you for sharing this. I just yelled it at the wife...and she's apparently one of the tools that didn't learn this...in the third grade! ;-)

Has he tried one of the $20-40 off-the-shelf omni-directional antenna products? ;-)
He has time to bang his head into a wall? This must to pass the time when not doing clean OS installs... ;-)
