  1. Router management on Vint Cerf Preps Interplanetary Internet Protocol · · Score: 1

In the future, Scott envisions routers afloat in deep space

Network management may be the biggest challenge. IP is already designed to deal with link failure and congestion. But, when the router out by Ganymede is down and won't come up you can't just dispatch a network engineer to zip out there with a laptop and console cable. (much as I'd like some aspects of that job ;-)

Voodoo economics has never worked. I think there is an optimal tax rate, but where it is looks to be a har question to answer. What really doesn't make sense is welfare for the finance industry. And, lowering the tax rate hasn't done much to address the gap between the rich and the poor, nor has it increase purchasing power either.

Believe it or not, there was once a day when Bill Gates and Microsoft were loved by millions across the globe. Long before the company was put on trial for its questionable business practices, it was heralded as the leader of the PC revolution and the one saving grace in an industry that was dominated by that "evil" IBM.

I'd have been impressed if the author had the guts to say when that might have been. I remember those days too. Gates wasn't that admired (not much amongst the geeks of the day at least). Those days didn't last long. I'm not saying he's wrong about apple and google, but I think his reminiscing is a tab skewed.

  18. Re:science and politics on Bill Allows Teachers to Contradict Evolution · · Score: 1

No scientific theory should be thought as a fact unless the theory has been fully proven and it is in general accepted by the scientific community.
I don't think any scientific theory is ever fact in the conventional sense of the word. All scientific theories are subject to question and future revision. Scientific observations are another matter, though, and when people like Richard Leaky refer to evolution as fact they're referring to the observations. In many ways its the opposite of religion. That's a difference that would be good for kids to understand. I agree - teaching kids to think critically for themselves is much better than dogma from either side of the fence.
  19. science and politics on Bill Allows Teachers to Contradict Evolution · · Score: 1

Political battles over science education make no sense. Science classes need to teach current science, and if a political tussle results in legislation one way or another, later teaching of current scientific material becomes burdened by the state. This just seems to cement the point that there is now almost no boundary between politics and religion. I read somewhere that Sidhartha had written that blind faith is political, and while I haven't found a link ro source with that quote, it seems more true than ever.

In this instance at least, /. "moderation" shows effective disfunctionality.
I think /. moderates the comments for reasons beyond just humorous color - I think they sincerely want to cut down on cruft. However, the moderation system itself shows up as cruft. There are probably better ways to improve the quality of discussions than what they're doing now.
