While obviously my 3/4 ton 4X4 diesel is not suitable to urban life or the streets of San Francisco. It hauls what I need to my remote ranch and doesn't shed parts or break down along the way. At just under 10,000lbs it gets 22 MPG highway and 18 MPG fully loaded at 11,500 lbs.
There is no unitized body truck that handle the loads and overall durability. 26.2 MPG is probably doable. I don't see much lighter vehicles in this class in the near future.
The basic reason is cost. Add $5000 premium for the engine and you have a $50K vehicle. Should I fail to mention additional fleet charges and addtional fuel taxes of 10 cents a gallon. For a work horse light truck 50K is insane enough!
The modern economic model dictates that you be very good at both skills, hardware and software.
It also dictates that you spend a great amount of your educational funds on mastering language skills, as you will find that writing reports will in the long run occupy a far greater amount of your time.

The Carly disease is endemic in America and I'm glad I will be long gone when we follow the path of the Roman Empire. It started a long time before she got there but obviously she is a iconic model of a great many powerful players, otherwise she would have never made it in the first place. Todays business model is exactly that told by the unnamed engineer. Sell, exploit or kill the brain pool by purchasing modest lack luster competitors who sell crappy products but have needed patents.
The 5 year ramp up time of new product development is fast becoming just a dream. I work in RD. Management complains about our average age of 55 years. Unfortunately the majority of younger recruits with new degrees take as much as ten years to develop common sense and work ethics let alone a working vocabulary.
The real problems are deeply embedded in our society and educational system. Even though our productivity remains the highest in the world, time is running out. In twenty years the leaders will be China and India. The US will become a Third World Nation with Nukes.

I installed a train horn in my 10,000lb diesel 4X4. Whenever I encounter a Prius owner trying to get better than 50 MPG on the highway I let her rip!

To my eyes a 50" or smaller DLP with at least the DLPII processor is superior to LCD and Plazma in performance.
