As much as I applaud their production of mostly unencrypted devices I suspect it has little to do with their market share. It probably has more to do with the fact that they are a leading manufacturer of most of the expensive components of mobile phones. Which is because they made real commitments to R&D decades ago.
Of course the two may very well be related. Unlike some US companies that are led by lawyer, marketers or economists, they still seem to have an engineering tradition.
When has this ever gone to court? The most advanced case is Microsoft vs B&N as far as I know. And the case there is looking very weak. Even if the few claims from the few patents left in the case are found to be both valid and infringed they are so narrow at this point that they are easily worked around.
The problem MS has with their software patents is that they were VERY late to the OS game.
This has probably always been the case. However, using.NET means buying the entire Microsoft stack.
At my last job I wrote an entire back office in Java. When my company merged the decision was made, over my vehement protests, that we would recode in c# just to support a thick client that was the bread and butter of the traders at the other company. Literally everything had to be moved just because it had been marginally easier to code a desktop app in c# initially.
Microsoft makes some good stuff, they really do. But since MS stuff only works well, or at all, with MS stuff you may end up taking a heavy does of shit along with the good.
For me it isn't about money. Since I have built my own machines for the past 20 years OS updates are optional for me. I pretty much have to use Microsoft on my main machine for the occasional games and nothing in Vista or 7 have really struck me as necessary.
I suspect this will be the last time I can reuse my XP install though. It is very possible that the next video card update I do wont support XP.
No doubt at all. Everything you said is right on and I suspect that the devs at google doing kernel work would agree. The problem lies in the fact that the "not really finished" power management stuff needed to be done 3 years ago. Now there are hundreds of millions of copies of wakelock code running on real devices.
There are user space workarounds for migration. How do you migrate drivers? Especially when you have no control over how the companies actually implementing your code.
I don't meant to imply that linux should incorporate weak design, but as someone who really wants to see OS thrive where is the line. What would be the path forward for google and android to be acceptable given the constraints?
Knowing next to nothing about what makes kernel code good or cruft what did Google submit that is cruft?
I am not a partisan in this, I really want to know. I chose to ask this question here because you seem passionate about this. I read a bit about the wake lock driver changes forever ago. There seemed to be a lot of disdain for that model at the time.
Aside from that, is there something that the OS community could do to help inform google? I ask only because android seems to be a wonderful means to an end. More than anything before it android could actually make this the year of the linux desktop. (I feel dirty for having said that)
As to whether a christian should follow the laws of the old testament.. well, you just couldn't be more wrong. The roman form of christianity that you leaned doesn't follow them because the romans weren't jews. The bible however, even in its roman form, is very clear on the old laws. (as clear as the bible gets at least) http://www.evilbible.com/do_not_ignore_ot.htm
Lastly, I cannot think of a nice way of saying this but every form of christianity is a bastardized form. Certainly, some are more and some are less so but that changes little.
Have to agree with geekoid on this. Bending the facts to fit your belief is never the right thing to do. It is simply the wrong answer to "If fact and faith disagree, which should change?".
Actually no, like many modern traditions the actual origins are much more convoluted. A list like this, or several, usually make the rounds about this time of year. Fist time I had seen this particular one but they are all pretty much the same:
Not sure what issue you had but I just gave it a go and it was quite smooth. The game it's self isn't my cup of tea but it ran just fine. Narration was funny, if I could have use my controller I prob would have played at least to the end of the demo..
While it may be true that Google's users are indeed it's products and advertisers are it's customers it is sloppy logic to see this as a bad thing.
Humans are a fairly unique product. We possess both free will and emotions. It is in Google's best interest to make sure that their product is never injured or angered in any way. Also, if Google wishes to keep or grow their production they must provide new and interesting things. Being a product is actually a very pleasant experience as long as you always have the option to leave. Pretty sure trophy girlfriends figured this out millenia ago ^^
Sorry, I really had never heard of this. So this is an OS setting? I assume this would be useful for correcting for differences in displays? If so, how would it differ from the hardware adjustment on monitors?
Just a nit pick. The roman empire spread because of long, nearly perpetual, and quite bloody campaign of conquest.
nice save!
This is actually a cautionary tale about RTFA before you post. It is an oft told story on slashdot but one that never seems to be learned :)
TFA: all items mentioned are being dropped from the FS not included.
PS That ingredient list sounds like a passable German dish.

hehe yeah, it really is. Even after having been burned by it a few times it is still so damn tempting.
Bah just rewrite it. Having reference code and a stable target makes development really fast.

Correct, that is exactly what they measure. But that is exactly what the article is about since that is exactly what NetApplications measures too.
Wonder if there have been more people in space or more people that have owned an XP tablet :p

For all but the Fire, no reason at all I suspect. The Fire's browser is a different beast all together though.
They are web usage stats not handset sales. So the 60% of phones which are "dumb" generated only 26% of traffic on sites tracked by NetApps.
I like StatCounter a lot more just because you can drill down.

I do with google analytics would release data like this. I believe they are the largest stat site by a mile now.

It isn't just you. Neal Stephenson has gotten VERY long winded. His early works were much better, and very good, in my opinion.
I also really liked Stephen R. Donaldson's "Gap Series". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_R._Donaldson#The_Gap_Cycle
Also a bit long winded but I enjoyed them a great deal.
Was the choice to ignore leviticus a conscious decision or was it divinely inspired?
Oh... so God sends the sin to hell?

Apple doesn't make much off of iTunes compared to the rest of their income, but 1.25B/Qtr is a friking BIG company.
