  1. Wonderful! on Minnesota Introduces World's First Carbon Tariff · · Score: 1

Minnesota has passed a measure to stop carbon at its border with North Dakota. Wonderful! So Minnesota has deployed a large-scale working version of Maxwell's daemon, then? Or perhaps they've merely come up with a scheme to make generating power with coal in ND and then selling to MN less cost effective (which admittedly is perverting the free market to achieve a common good).

Even with paper, readback suffers when you space the data too close together. You are correct though, the inverse relationship between higher speed and lower cost is also a factor when evaluating data storage, and for some applications a pen a paper are the optimal solution.

Might sell; will probably be too pricey to be successful. I have one question: with a touchscreen on each side, how does it keep from scratching one screen up while you are using the other? Also, although I'm sure an eInk display is a big win in terms of power consumption, I'm still not convinced it is that much more readable than a color LCD. Resolution is good, contrast not so much... maybe I'm just bothered by the slow page update time.

Any data storage standard is a compromise between reliability and capacity. Sure, you can increase the capacity using existing hardware, but that makes it just that more unlikely that the disk will read back without errors on a different player. I already have a problem with DVDs written by a computer tracking on my DVD player, this would only make it worse. The increase in capacity ain't worth the decrease in reliability.

My fear is that when the tables turn, as they invariably will, and Steinem's lie is exposed, it will be twisted to argue that women have a propensity to lie and their testimony should never be believed without corroborating proof from a man. While such turnabout generalization might be fair play, it would not be justice. I think your fears are unwarranted. Our Sheriff's department appears to already be moving to a system where regardless of who calls them, they physically inspect both parties in a domestic violence dispute. If one of them shows visible signs of being beaten, and the other doesn't, they simply arrest the one that doesn't look beaten up -- even if they are the original complainant. If neither one shows visible signs of violence, they simply advise you to work it out. Not sure what they do if both appear equally beat up, but they do advise one or the other party to GET OUT and cool off.

Now, your fears of false rape reports doing a real disservice to all those that have truly been assaulted may be justified. In both situations, they need to drop any bias in evaluating the he said/she said pissing contests (hard to do when it's a good looking woman and you're a horny male cop) and just look at the objective physical evidence.

Further more, in 30% of cases it is the woman, not the man committing violence, and women do more damage because they are far more likely to enlist the use of a weapon (in African-Americans closer to 50% of the time it is the woman). As a man who has never been violent, of course I am offended by this notion that violence is something committed by men against women and children. Violence is something that people do to people -- it is never acceptable. Your first and best defense is the get the hell out of that relationship at the first sign of abuse. Law enforcement simply cannot be depended upon to defend you -- they would rather not deal with domestic violence at all.

iSlate needs to have all the functionality of the iTouch for games, mp3s, and videos, plus function as a good large print eBook reader. The population is aging; baby boomers don't have the eyesight they once had. Sure, it's a niche squeezed between smartphones with smaller displays and notebooks/netbooks without touch screens, but if they can get the price point below $500 they could sell well as a viable eBook reader. Don't most people like to be able to listen to music while they read? The only way to make up for the inconvenience of being harder to lug around is to combine the functionality of every device you may want in a single device -- it beats the heck out of lugging around a separate cell phone, mp3/video player, PDA, GPS, eBook reader and notebook. (Granted, most smart phones already combine the first 4).
