Samsung just did something really annoying: They pulled an Apple with the Galaxy S8, and gave it a Samsung proprietary USB connector, instead of using the micro-USB connector that has been the defacto standard for portable devices for years now! So, if you want to charge you Samsung phone in your car, you either need to take your AC adapter cord with you everywhere, or buy more cords from Samsung! Samsung usually does things right... except when they try to copy Apple! (The USB-C standard should be fine for charging anything.)

  2. The point is, the WIMP interface will eventually go the way of the rotary dial telephone. The younger generation is growing up using the multitouch interface, which is a lot more intuitive for certain actions like resizing or rotating things on screen. Ok, I'm overstating the case; the IBM PC keyboard will be around for a long time, still doing the same tasks that people used to use typewriters and adding machines for: rapid entry of text or numeric input. And speech will replace the poorly conceived touch interface now being put in every automobile (pretty stupid to design a car with an interface you have to look away from the road to use!) A combination of touch and AI-assisted speech I/O will be used elsewhere. But I still prefer typing because i can type faster than I can talk, and it's is less awkward to fix my (frequent) mistakes when I'm typing. Another prediction: the most important job skill in the future will be the ability to work well with AI. That's why I'm trying to train all my family and friends to talk to computers now, with Amazon Alexa, Google Home Advisor, and Siri being the training wheels used (Cortana is a lost cause.)

You can get a 2018 Camry or Corolla with no money down and $189/month, add $300/month for insurance, about $50/month for gas, another $50 for maintenance (mostly oil change every 5000 miles). My $300/month Prius came with a maintenance plan for 3 years, but then I pay $500/month for insurance because my 16-year old daughter immediately smashed up one car within days of getting her license, and the other car a month later... costing Farmer's insurance about $12,000.

More upsetting to me, it is now possible for scammers to call me spoofing a caller id that matches the first 6 digits of my own, to try to trick me into thinking it's one of my neighbors. But of course, it a cell number that only indicates where i lived 15 years ago, so I don't actually know anybody with a number close to my own. But I still get the scammers calling me several times a week, in addition to getting calls from people I don't know asking me, "Why did you just call me?" when I never called them. So yes, the system should be designed to make it impossible to ever spoof a caller id. Or, we could set up our cell phones to always hang up and immediately call back anyone that calls us. Which brings up the question: why don't the 911 dispatchers do a call back to verify the number?

  22. Based off an _internet_ phone call to 911; if they use any regular phone line, it's traceable and they get arrested for making a false report. But then, the cops did a welfare check on me based on an email my mentally ill sister forwarded to them. I never saw the email, but I can only conclude she falsified it. One problem with law enforcement is they feel they HAVE to send someone out on every complaint. My ex-wife taught my toddler daughter how to call 911, so of course she had to try it -- and despite my ex catching my daughter doing it and assuring the dispatcher over the phone that everything was ok, we quickly got a knock on the door from the boys in blue. But of course, when I call them for actual problems, they take several hours to show up!

  23. Do they have the victim on bodycam video "reaching for his waistband" thus justifying the shooting, or is that just a lie the cops are going to tell every time they kill somebody now to make it sound justified? My understanding is that the cop had a body camera, but didn't turn it on before shooting someone... if you're not going to use it for hostage situations, when are you going to use it?
