    You're assuming that, like the aliens in Independence Day, their software was supplied by Microsoft. Perhaps as _really_ advanced civilization wouldn't have such a thing as forced updates! (Yes, some redundancy would be necessary on generation ships to make sure they survived.)

    But this is all really silly... what naturally occurring phonomena could cause dimming? Could a star itself brighten and dim if something sufficiently large crashed into it?

    Uh, no, "insider job" as in you take one of the CFO's loved ones hostage, then extort her into wiring the money and claiming it was a mistake. Not that the insider was smart enough to organize this all by themselves, they would need people expert in laundering money, i.e. the help of organized crime.

    Don't the mileage and emissions numbers come from tests performed by the vehicle manufacturer themselves, and not by an independent third party? Meaning that not only would any sane person expect them to be inaccurate, but also that the solution is obvious. Oh, and if you're going to do emissions testing, run it for an hour on a dynamometer at highway speeds -- let's see them rig the firmware to cheat on that!

    And, I bought a Honda Civic Hybrid. Oregon charged me $50 more to register it because "we don't get as much gas tax from it". Then I realized that the savings on gas were pretty much balanced out by paying more for the car and another $3000 every 8 to 10 years to replace the hybrid batteries. I still look at EPA mileage estimates, but I've come to realize there is no such thing as a free lunch.

Gamers looking to win penis size contests at LAN parties will be buying GTX 1080 cards are replacing them with the latest and greatest in two years, so on-chip graphics are irrelevant and unnecessary for them. For gaming, Kaby Lake doesn't show any real improvement in benchmarks over Skylake (at the same clock speed), although it may be easier to overclock. I'm probably going to wait, cause I don't need to win any dick size contests in the near future.

    We are stuck with the Intel standard because no other company can afford to spend a billion dollars a year on R&D and building new fabs. Sparc, MIPS, PowerPC, PA-RISC etc. all were good ideas at the time, but there wasn't the money to keep improving them to keep pace with Intel. ARM looks to be Intel's only viable competitor at this point. As others have pointed out, the RISC/CISC argument is meaningless at this point.

    I was sitting in Arby's listening to music on my headphones, it got quieter, so I turned it way up... because I didn't realize the battery in the bluetooth headphones had gone dead, and I was now listening to the music through the phone speaker! So basically, I annoyed everyone around me for several minutes until I figured otu my headphones weren't working.

  19. Integrating a GPU is nice, but can somebody show me a benchmark that proves Kaby Lake is actually any faster than Skylake? Anybody that cares about gaming is going to disable the built-in GPU and run a GTX 1080 anyway, so what's the point? More cores? No current games use all the cores.

    jet.com (and many other web sites) have a strategy of selling at a loss to capture "market share", then sell the company to some other sucker that doesn't realize they will lose their customer base as soon as they start charging enough to make a profit.

    My only complaint about the S7 is they dropped the infrared transmitter, so now I have to use my old phone when I lose my TV remote.

    Agreed. Apple _used_ to innovate. Now they are falling behind Samsung in so many ways. Where is the wireless charging, water resistance, memory card slot, etc. in the new iPhone 7? Oh yeah, they are "innovating" by dropping the audio connector... gosh, I wonder how many users requested that "feature"?
