And not to knock the Mac, but in most businesses Windows rules and so I'd say Windows would be the best bet.
That's true, but he's talking science and engineering, not business. I'm not sure about engineering but OS X has a much larger presence in science labs--especially in life sciences and data visualization--than it does in the overall marketplace.
A word processor and spreadsheet app could hardly be called "innovative" since both had been around for years before Office made the scene. Maybe PowerPoint, but I think that Adobe or Macromedia had already released something similar.
Funny thing about Office, though, is that it was originally developed as Mac software.
And where are you getting these "pristine" digital broadcasts? Most digital broadcasts are overcompressed pieces of shit due to the cable/satellite providers trying to cram way too many channels for how much bandwidth they actually have available.
I believe the OP was referring to over-the-air digital broadcasts, especially since he said exactly what you did about cable companies over-compressing the signals.
You can automate a GUI. AppleScript on Mac Classic used to be brilliant for this-- I'm not sure if it's still good or not.
Pretty much so. Still got it's occasionally aggravating syntax problems, though, like why does a script work fine for the basic functions in one app but not in another despite the fact that Apple has published scripting standards that they're all supposed to use?
Can somebody explain to me why buying 10 fully loaded iPads with my gold Amex prevents me from selling them on the black market afterwards but paying for one in cash doesn't?
Easy: Apple Stores don't accept American Express. "Visa--it's everywhere you want to be."
Disclaimer: I have no idea whether Apple Stores accept AmEx or not. It was just a joke.
That's how it's done in the real world: Make a policy that seems reasonable at the time, have something unforeseen pop up to show that maybe it's not as reasonable as you originally thought, re-think and change that policy to something that is.
While Apple's policy was not a good idea, at least they were able to see that and be flexible enough to change it. It's just too bad for them that they had to get a black eye in order to recognize it was bad policy to begin with.
Not that I disagree with your sentiments when it comes to ID proponents (they're morons) but I don't think this really counts as "making life." Not yet, anyway. It's a step in that direction, though.
Now I realize this is slashdot and people don't read the articles, or even the summaries sometimes. But I think we can assume they read the fucking title.
Are you kidding? A lot of them don't even read the comments. It's the only explanation for many of the replies I've gotten some of my own posts--replies that show a complete disregard for or ignorance of what I actually said.
I'd go with DrDos or Xenix
My vote is for CP/M

And now my Facebook profile picture ends up on an Anti-Herpes-Drug ad.
With my luck, every female I know will see it.
Hey, you're a Slashdotter. Showing up in an anti-herpes drug ad would probably only improve your prospects.
How the fuck do you propose they do that? Should they write over the image with a white font, "THIS IMAGE CAME FROM JOEBLOW.COM"?
How about doing it the same way Google does it, with attribution and a link to the original source? Is that too difficult for you to grasp?
I've always maintained that most CEO's and politicians are just sociopaths who are very skilled at hiding it.
I'd agree with you completely except for the part about hiding it.
What about Office?

We will solve this horrible situation by dumping shredded tires and golf balls into the ocean until the problem is solved!
"But perhaps...
I said until it was solved!
I agree. What we should be doing is dumping a bunch of shredded oil executives in the hole until the oil stops flowing.

How about this?
Read some of the product reviews while you're there, BTW. I guarantee at least a few good laughs.

Five bucks says it doesn't pass! Any takers?
I enjoy being ambiguous. It makes people think harder.
Yeah, but thinking hard makes my head hurt, so stop it!

Or maybe he was being so subtly ironic that I missed the point entirely.
Yeah, but it's hard to argue that it will never happen now.
Agreed.
Now, whether that's a good thing or not is somewhat debatable. I can come up with arguments on both sides of that one.

Pandora's box has been opened. I'm excited to see what pours out over the next decades.
Uh, I think you need to read up on your Greek mythology a bit more. Opening Pandora's Box was not such a good thing.

Excellent rant, but you forgot to tell us to get off your lawn.
+5 Funny but gong-worthy!
True, but how can something be so funny at the same time it tortures the language so badly that it makes my head hurt just to read it?

Oh to be so burdened.
Yeah. I'd love the chance to prove that becoming a billionaire wouldn't fuck with my ego...
Yep, definitely a typesetter's in-joke. I think newspapers still use the term "slug" for a typographical filler, though, even in the electronic age.
I respect the Muslim religion, just as I respect Christianity, Buddhism*, etc.
Be careful what you say here. In my case, that would be "not at all," which would no doubt get a fatwah slapped on my ass.
That's unreasonable.
