It wasn't the only, nor even a particularly important, piece of corroborating evidence for the story.
The story was well backed up by many other sources.
The lady who originally typed the original memo authenticated it, so the statement that they were never authenticated is nonsense.
So using that document in the report was bad, but it does nothing to invalidate the story.
The counter all out assault launched by all the other media organizations focused solely on the exact piece of paper in question without ever having to address the actual meat of the story, all of which still stands entirely unchallenged at this point.

And yes, we all understand that there are more cameras, modifications of laws to account for acts of terror, etc., but people simply can't see the application of technology or updates of laws for what it is: for the most part, a genuine, honest attempt by persons within free governments in free societies to protect that system that are no more sinister than the police or the state adopting any other new technology that makes its charge from society easier, or an update to any other law, which we ostensibly value in societies that are based on rule of law.

I do not have the right to make copies of my property and give it to somebody else, but apart from that, which is all that copyright law covers, I can do pretty much any damn thing I choose with my legally purchased property.
I never licensed anything from Microsoft, nor have I ever done business with them in any way shape or form. They can say I did until they're blue in the face but neither that, nor your ignorant statements will ever change that fact.
Add in the fact that they were *not* upfront with the terms.
After I *purchased* a copy of their product from a third party, meaning that I have no relationship with them at all and that they have no rights to try and insert themselves in a business relationship between myself and somebody else, they put a bunch of idiotic restrictions regarding how I choose to use my legally purchased property as if they had any right to do any such thing.
They don't. I have no contract with them and I have never, not in any conceivable way, entered into any sort of relationship with them.
Copying it is not allowed under copyright law. That's the only thing that is in any way relevant to this situation. How I choose to use it apart from that is solely my business.

The story checked out 100%. Every fact asserted was backed up.
Every word on the memo was accurate. The person who typed the original memo *verified* that the words on the paper were the correct words.
Everything about that story was correct with the single trivial detail that the same exact words were actually originally on a different piece of paper than the one presented.
That was a good story and they were absolutely correct to run it. That's called good journalism, although the assinine reaction to and the continued flogging of that trivial meaningless detail shows where good journalism went in this country.
