"I wonder what they could have done to you if they found the book in your locker. Would it have been enough to get you in trouble? Or is it freedom of thought, your right to read whatever you want?? I have been seeing a trend of less freedom, at least it feels like a trend. But you said this was '73. I was reading in the papers some elementary school kids got arrested because one painted a picture of classmates getting shot. I guess after columbine, that's the way it is.
I just had a funny thought. You know most of the stuff in the cookbook is BS, that won't work, or that will explode injuring the person trying to mix chemicals together. Wouldn't it be something if the government wrote the cookbook, then distributed it."
At the time the cookbook was banned in California and possession would have gotten me expelled and possibly charged with a misdemeanor. This was a time when civil unrest was a major concern to the government with groups like the Simbionese(sp?) liberation army and other such taking violent actions against government and civil institutions. Also the many protests against the Vietnam war which turned violent, unsettling times.
As far as the recepies in the book were concerned I knew better than to even consider trying most of them. My chemistry teacher in High School was familiar with the cookbook and described the dangers of several of the recopies. Thank you Mr. Stradley, as I was tempted to try out some of them out of sheer curiosity and youthful ignorance.
"what if some teen in high school did a search for "anarchist cookbook""
I was a senior in high school who had a copy of that infamous volume, at a poor time to be caught with it '73. I was lucky in that I had loaned it to a friend the day before the FBI searched my locker. Yes The FBI, In civics class we all got to fill out civil service forms which were sent in for processing, mine got me investigated. One of the questions on the form asked something along this line - do you belong to or support any organization or group that advocated the overthrow of the United States Government by violent or other means? I answered yes the democratic national party (Nixon was in office and my SSN was getting close on the draft boards posted every Friday). That answer got me investigated for almost 6 months, what a waste of tax dollars but that is our government in action here in the US.
From reading the article in the posted link in the parent it is obvious that Immersion did own most of the so called prior art thus negating the argument. AFIK The suit against sony was based on newer patents of updated technologies developed by immersion and licensed by almost all of the other counsole and third party add-on manufactures.
From the news stories etc. regarding the free wi-fi debacle in Penselvania, it seems aparent the telecos were unwilling to deploy as the ROI was not there yet Therefore the City decided to do it's own rollout. I believe that the telecos are behind the movement to stop municipal wi-fi deployment as they view it as a viable resource for increased revenue in the future when demand picks up sufficiently. The truly bad part of this, IMO, is if states outright ban municipal deployment, what will happen in the smaller/rural communities where the small user base is insufficient to support the deployment of comercial broadband products? Where no comercial provider will deploy as the cost of the underlying infrastructure would either take too long to recover or potentially be unrecoverable? The States in doing blanket bans on municipal wi-fi would be doing a great disservice to such comunities.
From nearly 20 years in some level of retail management I have learned that the most important thing to do is treat your employees/co-workers with respect. This is especially true when it comes to diciplimary actions -KEEP THEM PRIVATE- nothing I have seen destroys moral faster than berating or diciplining an employee in front of others.
Also when dealing with a problem focus on the undesirable behavior and actively involve the employee in the problem solving process, get their take on why the problem exists and what steps they believe can be taken to over come the problem.
And when in doubt it never hurts to seek advice from your superiors and other more experienced managers. After all none of us are omniscient.
This post was not intended to induce a flame war. My intent was to point out what I believe is one of the major shortcomings of any Fundamentalist doctrine through the use of satirical humor. Namely the "Our way is the only way" belief. I personally am a Christian though I do not believe in or hold to any given religion or religious sect.
But to get back on topic I personally find porn somewhat boring to watch, not always the case though when I was younger I did find it rather addicting but it got repetitive and redundant fast nothing new but the bodies. But I will defend others rights to conduct themselves in any manor they see fit as long as they do not harm others.
As to the debate(s) over porn and obscene material it is entirely subjective as what may be obscene to one is not necessarily to another. We all need to make our own choices and are full well capable of doing so. I for one do not want or need any one dictating those choices to me. The exceptions being those laws that protect others from harm.
What consenting adults do for pleasure or profit sexually and chose to disseminate to other adults is their business.
The Whitehouse announced today A new law prohibiting extramarital, non hetrosexual, non missionary position sex will be enacted by presidental decree. All persons failing to confirm to the new law will be guilty of a capital crime and face imediate execution.

Reading some of the comments got me wondering just what the age of consent is in different states currently.
I found this site http://www.ageofconsent.com/ageofconsent.htm to be quite informative.
