Ha! I got a huge kick out of you buying a shirt by the way. Thanks. And do you mind if I use this quote in our promotional literature?:-)
As for the topic at hand, a simple search for 'kuro5hin' in stories will indeed find that K5 has been slashdotted no less than 4 times so far. So much for "slashdot anti-competitive behavior". And I'd also like to go on record as saying that jamie rocks, and I still read/., and that There Is No Feud. So get over it already, people!
And, if by any odd chance you ever do catch me saying anything negative about/., it's just cause I'm a crotchety bastard.
Anyway, notice how WonkoSlice links to Slashdot, and Kuro5hin mentions Slashdot in their FAQ (and probably other places), but Slashdot never makes any mention of Kuro5hin or WonkoSlice or any "Slashling" sites, except in a few user's signatures and in offtopic troll-like posts like this one. I wonder why..
Cause Slashdot was first to make this a viable form of website. We all owe them that, and any one of the "slashlings" that says they owe nothing to Slashdot is lying. K5 owes most of it's audience to slashdot as well.
Didja notice, though, that/. has a Kuro5hin slashbox? It's not nearly as confrontational as everyone seems to think.
You know what's really funny? We've run links to, I think, all of the installments of the Cracked! series individually, and every time another one comes out, somebody bitches about how "if we wanted to read this, we'd be reading rootprompt already". Just goes to show, you can't please everyone.:-)
Hey Chris. I have to agree with you. I get along pretty well in the open source community without even reading slashdot all that much, so there goes the "communications monopoly" theory. SourceForge hosts some development services for my project, Scoop, and VA has yet to try to make me sign over my soul to them in return. In fact, I think SourceForge is a huge benefit to us all. Sure, I could find another place to run mailing lists, and I could run my own CVS, and I could run an ftp server for releases, but just the fact that I can spend half an hour and have all those services collected in one place is a big plus for developers who also have "real" jobs to attend to.
I've followed Bowie's ranting against VA for a while, and frankly, it reeks of childish pique. Get on with your life Bowie. If you still want to run something like SourceForge, think of a different name, and write some code. You're just not convincing anyone of anything except that you're a petulant child.
I have a color TV that my parents bought when I was about 2 (I'll be 24 in July). We've had this TV literally as long as I can remember. It still works just fine.
Sorry-- I've been away; I'm catching up on back email right now. You did email me about it didn't you?:-)

Er. Sorry about that.:-)
Curiosity: How many hits, or what percentage, roughly, seemed to come from kuro5hin? I have no idea if we're even capable of slashdotting someone yet-- the readership is not all *that* big. I'd be interested to hear numbers from your side, if you've got 'em.
I don't take offense at them. They're just not usually appropriate, IMO. *Now* they're the funniest things on/., but that wasn't always the case. They're just good here now because most of the rest of the discussions suck so bad.:-)
Yay! Someone was listening! Now keep telling people this.:-)
I've answered the question "why do you delete comments" way nore times than I've actually deleted a comment. Probably a factor of 10 more times, actually. Here's hoping someone else will take up the explanatory mantle for a bit!:-)
In theory at least, kuro5hin's system ought to scale better than slashdot's, considering your total pool of moderators is nearly as large as the pool of posters. Also, when you rate a comment on kuro5hin, it's not permanent and immutable-- you can change your rating if you think it's necessary. You only ever get counted as one vote, but you can change it if you want.
It isn't yet widely used, though, and does lack some features necessary for it to be truly a filtering system, rather than just ordering. Time will tell.:-)
I currently live in DC, and have never once felt unsafe here. The reason, IMO, that DC had such a hard time with crime and poverty for so long, was mostly due to the (mis)management of former Mayor Marion Barry. Basically, there were no services, everyhting here was expensive as hell, and there was no incentive for any of the huge number of suburban commuters to move here, where they work, and great incentive for them to live outside the city. The root of all of this was, as it always is, basic petty government corruption. Barry spent all of the city's money installing his cronies in city-government sinecures, and there was nothing left over for schools, infrastructure, etc. And Congress didn't care, because they had their little social experiment petri dish to play with.
Luckily, this has all started to change, and the change is accelerating. DC, today, is a very nice city to live in, if you can put up with the torturous DMV. We're still recovering in some areas. Now if only Congress would recognize that we are taxpaying citizens of this country, and give us Federal Representation. For the Americans reading this: Did you know that residents of DC do not have a vote in congress, despite paying federal taxes? We have one non-voting delegate (currently Eleanor Holmes Norton). Remember in elementary school when they taught you that "Taxation without representation is tyranny"? Welcome to your nations capital.
I'm getting awfully worn down by the trolling that goes on "in the name of" Kuro5hin here too. I *really* wish it would stop. It's always nice when someone mentions K5 in a good way, but I hate appearing in the trolls. For the record, they do not represent my site.
FWIW, though, have to disagree with you about being on/.'s heels with news. Typically it takes much longer on K5 between "story breaks" and "story goes up on page", due to moderation. Meanwhile, any registered user can see it though. Take a look back a bit-- for stories that K5 and/. both cover, we're first at least as often as they are, and I suspect more often. I'm not sure what you mean about *splat*'s though. That was a little unclear.
Dupes: Yeah, I do that too. I think of that more as housecleaning though. But for completeness' sake, ok.
It was kind of funny, the very first time. But SLIYA in four different articles, and submitted as a story for good measure was waaay too much. And as for scaling, I have a couple options. I may allow users to rate a comment "spam". X number of spam ratings and it goes to "potential spam purgatory" where admins can review and see if it really is. If it's not, it'll be reinstated, if it is, it just decays away. As usual, I prefer to distribute the work as much as possible.:-)
Nope, I don't deny it at all. The posts this person is referring to consisted of such sparkling gems as "STUFF LINUX IN YOUR ASS". We don't care about that. This is the only sort of thing I do delete though-- the blatant and pointless spam. I'll leave it, even if it's a moderately good troll.:-) If you want a site that never deletes anything, and has no concern about it's S/N, I recommend slashdot. I simply have a different attitude toward people using my site to spew garbage like the previous poster does.
The meaning of kuro5hin is in the FAQ. And no, such a question would not get deleted. Only things like "STUFF LINUX UP YOUR ASS", which is childish and totally unnecessary. And when I refer to posts like that as spam, I mean spam in the sense listed in definition 2 in the Jargon file.
And if both your parents are dead, my condolences. Losing a loved one sucks more than anything else.
You're right about all your points. However, this was meant to be a very high-level intro to cryptographic concepts, for the beginner. You obviously know more than a beginner would, so you probably didn't learn anything here.
If you knew nothing about encryption, and read this article, you'd at least have an idea what people meant when they said "One time pad" or "public key". I should hope that no one is going to read this and go out and try to implement an algorithm! Being able to do that would take *way* more learning than we can possibly hope to offer.

No. I don't promote like that. "Eats your lunch"? I don't want to eat Rob's lunch. Or Jeff's. They can keep their lunches, as far as I'm concerned.

As for the second bit-- that does suck. We're working on fixing the story voting thing so that (hopefully) won't happen so much.
