  1. Good enough on MPEG LA Extends H.264 Royalty-Free Period · · Score: 1

This should be good enough to buy some time for alternative codecs. In my opinion the tag should be treated just like the tag, essentially allowing more or less any video file to be specified as the source. How often do you see xpm images as the src of img tags nowadays? It was one of the original image formats.
A few years will buy some time for the open source communities to develop some really good codecs.
Ogg Theora doesn't really have any benefit over mpeg4/h264 except its license. Its competition is mainly avi/xvid and such previous generation codecs and containers.
Let's not hang up on this issue, initial h264 support for video is better than flash and the associated licensing issues of the flash authoring tools and the drawbacks of such a closed proprietary format.

Sorry, I think you got me wrong there. I didn't defend Apple's RAM prices. They've always added a huge markup on memory and storage options.
What I did, was comment on "standard DDR2/800 with an ECC", which the Mac Pro memory isn't. There's still a big difference between regular ECC vs Fully Buffered and the memory modules are just as different from regular DDR2 DIMMs as RIMM's and such.

Actually, you are missing the point about the memory. Mac Pros use "DDR2 ECC fully buffered DIMM (FB-DIMM) memory". That's a different kind of DIMM that essentially have half the memory controller on each DIMM.

    Here's a quote from wikipedia:

"Fully Buffered DIMM architecture introduces an Advanced Memory Buffer (AMB) between the memory controller and the memory module. Unlike the parallel bus architecture of traditional DRAMs, an FB-DIMM has a serial interface between the memory controller and the AMB."

Nope, the CO2 that life releases is not from fossil C-sources.

By burning fossil sources, we are releasing CO2 to the atmosphere that wasn't there in the first place. (Or were in circulation millions of years ago.)

By burning organic matter (such as trees), we are releasing CO2, that was in circulation:

Plants take their carbon (C) from CO2 in the atmosphere when they grow and release the O2. When plants are burned, the same Carbon they bound in the first place is combined with the O2 (Oxygen) they released. That's what the balance is about.

The balance is also ok, when you eat plants or eat animals that ate the plants and so on... When you (or other animals) breathe, the carbon eaten is burnt in our bodies and released the same way as directly burning the plants.

If fossil sources were replaced with organic sources in combustion processes, the net balance would be ok. When we are running on fossil energy, the net CO2 released is more than the the are able to bind. That's why oil and (fossil) coal burning and destruction of rain forests is bad for us.

    Remember: Life is organic chemistry!

  20. Tech Specs on Microgenerators Coming Soon to Electronics Near You · · Score: 2, Interesting

Consumers, industry, and the military are all demanding smaller power supplies for smaller and more pervasive electronic devices. Researchers at the National University of Singapore and California State Polytechnic University (Pomona) recently developed a microgenerator to meet these needs. As long as hydrogen and air are fed into it, the 1-cm3 device generates 4.5 W.

Previous proposals for microgenerators attempted to scale down existing generator designs, but their moving parts made them difficult to manufacture. The team's proposal dispenses with moving parts entirely. The new design radiates heat obtained from hydrogen combustion. A selective emitter focuses the radiation into a small range of wavelengths, and a photovoltaic converter subsequently turns the radiation into electricity.
