I may run Linux myself, but in almost everything I do on my desktop (that isn't itself Linux-related) I am interacting with non-Linux machines. I'm forever "losing out" because I can't receive MSN special features. Sure I could do webcam with what was gnomemeeting (it looks awesome) but does anyone run it? Thankfully now I have friends riding Firefox and one using Jabber (googletalk).
PDF is an open standard as is, and certainly a good one, for a start. For saving documents (paper) in a way you can be guaranteed will render the same anywhere else. RTFA, and Unipage is entirely different and in no way competing project, revelant to saving webpages as "one-file", in an.mhtml way. Is that a common problem anyway?
What I've always wanted is to use Google properly, with full regex functionality, see Perl. Currently Google gives you ten terms (I call them words), allowing you to quote some, and use a single-level of AND and OR. And excludes, but these eat away at the ten word limit speedily.
I want wildcards.* and to be able to escape punctuation! It may look like a cartoon character swearing, but for those that can, it would give us way more power.
>Free speech is the absolute foundation of democracy and freedom. I like what you say, so just interested, what are your views on the publishing of offensive material to Muslims (cartoons, films, books) and the "glorification" of Islamic terrorism?
Right now, the first can get you shot eight times and stabbed in the street. And the second is as subjective as

Oh no!! If you're not thinking what I'm thinking then I'll shout it!! This years going to bring us... Emo spyware! We can't stop it. It'll be out on the high street in those drainpipe jeans and the dark emovers and the eye-liner and the thick glasses oh no oh no oh no oh no oh no oh no oh.

Something about the mozilla suite on linux?
on
A History of Firefox
·
· Score: 3, Interesting
Wasn't the Mozilla suite very popular on Linux, perhaps accounting for most of its users, shipping with Red Hat and the other non-K distros as the default web and email applications? But then there was a speedy fork which became very popular on windows as an alternative to ie, thus mozilla greatly changed their position, almost abandoning their old userbase for their new intiative of evengalistic saving of windows/ie users. But then I see that ie/7 is going to ship very close to firefox 1.5 as it did to ie/6 (layout, extra features disabled, tabs hidden).
Ouch. A month ago I was presented with the problem of how to replace one of my hard-drives which had been making some *very* ugly noises and criticially failing regularly. I was afraid, this looked painful, I certainly didn't trust the suggestion of using tar grep or cp -a to simply move everything from one device to another. Sounded linux 1995 to me.
But then at this moment, boy was I pleased to find I'd used lvm (logival volume management) during the install. I thought this was a bit crazy, having two partitions that are intangible from the two disks, but then it all made sick sense. All i had to was to format the new hard-drive (pvcreate) and then run "pvmove/dev/hdbroken/hdnew" which moved all the data on the old disk to the new one, and then "pvremove/dev/hdbroken". Genius. I guess you know about all this being gentoo and hardcore. I just want to give my anecdotal evidence as a case for why y'all should use LVM next time you start a system.
Even if you read the RTFA, which says that rather than computer exploding windows-style, nix hackage will just wreck your home, which is supposedly all that matters to a home user. Still wrong. Think multiple users for a start. But that's totally wrong when it amounts to time lost. If windows gets fucked as it often does i've seen many a user stick in their oem disk, reinstall completely, and then go through painfully reinstalling everything they had before. Say my/home was wrecked? All I'd need to do is fdisk the drive and create a new user? Besides, as in unix only exectuable files can be a source of infection, rather than screwed up images and office files, I can safely copy away anything I want. It's dumb. Sorry OSnews.
These are a complete oxymoron. Google and windows live (I hear) are all about reimplenting normal functionality in confusing new ways, that certainly won't work on any simple client.
By doing absolutely FUCK ALL about spam in the past two years, rather than aggressively trying to protect its consumers (I use 'consumer' in the force-fed sense), Microsoft have solved their problem (if not ours) by leading their dumb users into accepting spam (if bill gates couldn't fix it, there's nothing that can be done) - their attitude has changed from the questioning human spirit of resistance "this is ludicrous why should I have to put up with this - something must be done!! " to the quite british depressive "ohhh (sigh) spam, it's like rain i just put up with it and make myself a cup of tea". you shouldn't! ATTITUDE!! it's such dumb passive majorities that allow atrocities to be committed. that leaves our majority to fight HARD to make the system better for everyone.
Quick facts: most systems are binary. Triple systems are also possible (see Tatooine) and quadruple ones made from two pairs have been found. A week ago Hubble found that the north star, is in fact three stars - grid, magnetic and polar anyone?
Making me nostaligic, I thought they'd been eradicated sometime in the 90s. Not had one this century. How can we triumph in eradicating smallpox and now the WHO so close to elimating polio? Oh because ppl aren't as dumb as computer users.
We all know the web isn't the "click here for free mony [sic]" place pop-ups have led us to believe. In deed putting adverts on your personal website, sending free ipod links, selling spam emails, google referrals, beanz, whatever you don't earn money like this.
But anyway, why can't we just make up some data and then send it?
I don't think many of us would consider burning ourselves as a form of protest even if the situation was useless. Hum was he inspired by the Rage cover:P
Excuse me, think back to that guy, standing in the path of the line of tanks, and stopping them. Even if it accomplished nothing locally, that has to be one of THE most touching images of the last century, that has inspired thousands to get up stand up for their rights.

But yes all my friends use windows!
So will such features help Desktop Linux?
