  2. Re:Tivo does NOT have a 30 second skip feature on Calling Out TiVo · · Score: 1
TiVo goes one step beyond that. First off, the 30-second skip feature is not useful, IMHO, since you need to wait until the next commercial starts before you can know whether to skip 30 seconds. And then, if for some reason the next commercial is less than 30 seconds, you've skipped to far.

TiVo's solution is better. You can fast forward at three different speeds. When you hit play, it jumps back a few seconds. Why? Because it expects you to be fast forwarding through commercials, and once you see the show is back on, you press play. TiVo makes it easier for you by rewinding a bit. This makes it MUCH easier and faster to skip commercials than some stupid 30-second skip feature.

It should be obvious that Oracle's software engineers are some of the best, if not the best, database designers in the world. They can provide insight that 99% of Linux kernel programmers would never have. The whole point is for the kernel developers to review the proposals and make a judgement on each one.

Obviously, if Oracle really cared about these changes, they'd make them themselves and submit the code along with the ideas. There's nothing wrong with a version of the Linux kernel that adds features specific Oracle, it's up to Linus to decide whether these changes are #ifdef'd into the official kernel.

Unfortunately, Linus has been known to make incredibly stupid decisions. For instance, he refuses to add a kernel debugger because he thinks that real programmers don't need a debugger, and all it will do is reduce the quality of the code because programmers will (somehow) suddenly stop caring about good design and just write a bunch of hacks instead. Yes, I know it's absurd, but that's exactly what he thinks.

  18. Why human cloning is unethical on Cloned Animals Show Grave Health Problems · · Score: 2
I just wanted to include this text from an editorial in a paper I read last month. It's from Phillip Thompson, the directory of the Center for Ethics and Leadership at St. Edwards University in Austin. It's about people who choose to clone themselves as an alterternative to birthing a child.

"The primary problem is that cloning violates the unique identity and inherent dignity of each person. The clone will not be the genetically unique mixture of two parents, but an exact replica of only one person. This lack of individual identity will cause massive psychological scarring and familial disruption. How can one live in the shadow of one's older self and their reputation, accomplishments (good or bad) and physical ailments? How do we view ourselves if our sole reason for existence is not love, but utility? How do we make sense of our identity within a family? These questions suggest that our culture's sense of human development, personal identity and family relationships will be shattered."

Anyone who's considering cloning themselves should think very hard about this. The parents and other family members will always expect the clone to be "just as good" as the original. If a doctor clones himself, and the clone decides that he wants to be an artist instead, the doctor will consider his "son" (or daughter) to be defective somehow. I suspect that if human cloning does become possible, we'll have a collection of clones with such massive psychological problems that it will become illegal.

  22. #1 problem is the students on Improving CS Education? · · Score: 4
I received my MS degree at the same university where I got my BS degree (both in Computer Science). While a grad student, I tought undergraduates in exchange for free tuition. I can tell you one thing: I learned a whole lot more than the students did.

Granted, this is just one school, but I think it's something you'll find in most universities. My students just did NOT want to learn the material. They would skip class and not visit me during office hours, and then complain that they didn't get enough help for the projects (I'm serious!). None of them showed any natural aptitude or curiosity whatsoever.

I was one of those students who generally knew more than the teaching assistants, since I had already been programming for ten years by the time I was a freshman (I miss my TRS-80 :-)). But when it was my turn to teach, I was amazed at the laziness and ineptitude I saw. I know my classmates back in college were never this bad, so I can only assume one of two things:

    • I'm a really, really bad teacher and somehow I convinced the students they'd be better off not doing any work.
    • My students really were less competent.
Reason #2 makes a lot more sense to me.

So before you go trying to improve the CS curriculum, take a look and see if your classmates are worth it. You might be better off finding a good professor and volunteering to work with him on projects.
