  1. Audiophiles and packaging on Return of the Vinyl Album · · Score: 1

I really think that the rise in vinyl sales can be attributed to more than just "audiophiles". It's also about packaging and their popularity in live hip-hop and even electronic music, both of which are increasingly popular among the largest groups of music purchasers. I really do think this is what a lot of people miss when purchasing music online or even on CD: things like album notes, lyrics, and album art. Honestly, I buy most of my stuff on CD. But I have most of my favorite albums on vinyl because I would rather have the "full package" for my collection than just a shiny disc and a 4"x4" piece of paper. Sound quality isn't EVERYTHING.

Hey, you're preaching to the choir, here. That's why I wanted one so bad.

  3. Just got one on Time Warner Cable Runs Out of HD DVRs · · Score: 1

Wow, I just picked up one of these last week for a relative who got an Aquos 43". Glad I got it when I did. I wondered when the area Time Warner storefront said they were completely sold out of HDMI cables, the demand for which they said the manufacturer couldn't keep up with, either. Reason? They were selling decent 8' HDMI cables for $19.95. Not bad considering Radio Shack and Best Buy and Circuit City and ALL of them don't carry any for less than $60. Friggin price fixers. The problem is that the picture quality on TW (compared to other HD sources) looks like ARSE. Their system just doesn't have the bandwidth per channel necessary. But their cable modem service has been spectacular; at least here in Houston.

  4. Cydoor removal/eXeem Review on Exeem Open Beta Released · · Score: 1

While it indeed sucks that not only is this software not open source, but also includes spyware, at least it still seems to work just fine after removing Cydoor. While it holds promise, the lack of an open source project (especially when it includes GPL code, grrrr) will certainly hinder its progress. Now, if the authors actively moderated the network like they did Suprnova, org, I could see the justification for ad revenue, but this would open them up to legal liability, obviously, so that's not going to happen. We'll see how the peer review feature works. The implementation in eMule works fairly well (though far from perfect) so at least there's hope. eMule is still, IMO, the most technically impressive network, especially when considering the incredible success of Kademlia But it's just so much slower than Bittorrent and uses so many connections and ports that every single software firewall I have tried has caused speed problems with it and/or excessive CPU/memory usage. This is why I have high hopes for eXeem; the speed and leanness of the bittorrent protocol when compared with others if its generation.
