    Yep, did some checking, and the modern 15" and 17" powerbooks support 32bit cardbus, which gives 132MB/s, or 1056Mbit/sec. Plenty for firewire 800, but not much left over for anything else...

    I _think_ you're wrong. Well, at least about the slot in Powerbooks, since it's 'PCCard' (PCI bus based), not PCMCIA (isa based?). PC-Card slots have plenty of bandwidth to drive dual external monitors (see 'vtbook')

    Question about raid6 vs raid10. Given that a two drive failure can kill a raid 10 setup, but not a raid 6 setup, when and why would you recommend a raid 10 setup over a raid 6 setup?

    Modern hard drives can easily saturate 50MB/s on sequential reads. Also, reading from cache on the drives will obviously be much faster than firewire.

    How would you know that an email is a reply?

    Well, I'd probably start with making the message id a cyrptographic function of the sender and the date the message was sent, then look for the 'in-reply-to' header in the return message. It's really not rocket science. Sure, some stupid clients won't handle the 'in-reply-to' header properly, or people won't really 'reply' to the message, they'll create a new message to the user. However, the above idea will certainly fix most of the problems with determining whether the message is really a reply or not.

    Actually, what my friend has in mind is ripping all the DVDs he's got (~350) to a large RAID array and being able to select the DVD from a menu.

    Does your system handle DVD's (in their native MPEG2)? Since that's a big concern of his.

    No, RAID0 means striping which means faster reads, maybe faster writes. If you just want a bigger volume, you can go with an LVM.

    Agreed, and the other replies to your post are just idiotic. "No, see God just existed forever. That way we just eliminate the question of how He came into being. Simple, see?" You may be mischaracterizing their beliefs (sprang into existence vs existed forever), but the issue with it is still there. I don't pretend to know what brought the universe into existence, or what there was before the big-bang (if that theory is correct), but the belief that whatever it was foresaw me typing this and is somehow upset that I don't believe in 'Him' is just idiotic and useless.

    What overhead? It's not like the cycles are being spent if you're not doing anything with said GUI.
    My problem is that you can't buy a motherboard without on-board video (for say, a 1U server) for less than one with it. WTF? I would much rather have a server with good bios support for headlessness that doesn't supply _power_ to the graphics chip, than an OS that can ignore the fact that the chip is there.

    I spent 3 months bike touring in New Zealand in 1990. Excellent country. I came back telling everyone (tongue in cheek) about how horrible it was, because I didn't want people moving there and fucking it up :-O

    If I were to leave the US (I'm not planning on it, I've still got hope that Bush et. al are fucking up enough that the rest of America will wake up and throw the bastards out) that's where I'd go. My only complaint about New Zealand is that they take after the british too much :-)

    I've got a Ceiva2 ( http://www.rangat.org/rthille/Computer/Ceiva2/inde x.html ) of which the backlight has failed. I tried my Fluke DMM to check the voltage out of the inverter, but the frequency is too high. Anyone have a good way to decide (before I go buying inverters or tubes) which is the part I need to replace?

    I'd agree with you for the most part (enough to throw out the mods I've already done in this article), but I'd describe myself as an agnostic atheist. I believe that there is no god. But I believe that because of how they've rigged the game disproving the existence of god is impossible. And it's impossible to know one way or another. Of course I think that it's just as likely that the "faries on the hill" made the world, and that there are teapots in orbit around the earth, and believing in god is just wanking, since it really doesn't mean spit here on earth. But I would say that I can't be certain that no god exists. My knowledge and ability to know things stops before we get to the existence of an all powerful creator. (Wanker that he is if he does exist...)

    I agree with the other reply to you, however, to someone not familiar with the situation (anyone East of Arizona?), they could read it the way you did. The thing about the Colorado is that the damming of that and removal of all the water to L.A. is destroying the Sea of Cortez ("Mexico's Galapagos"), and it will probably take Federal/International action to reduce/reverse that, just like with Mono Lake. All so L.A. can have lots of swimming pools and green lawns.

    As we've seen in New Orleans, flood waters are good. They bring silt which builds up offshore barrier islands which protect areas from storms. They also renew the land for growing crops and wild plants for the wildlife. In general, water systems can be a nearly closed loop (given appropriate landscaping), and shouldn't need water imported from another state. If you're doing that, you're doing something wrong...
