  2. Re:Multiuser OSs are usefull on Should The Next Windows Be Built On Linux? · · Score: 1

"multi-user OS" means that the OS is able to support tasks running as different users, without them interfering with each other. It is more concerned with the security (ie I can't read memory that your task is running in and e.g. find out the password to your mail account). The phrase "multi-user OS" is less concerned with the fact that different people could use the computer at different times, yet it will keep their settings for them.

Any modern OS will be multi-user, simply because it is more secure to restrict system services to the minimum privileges required to carry out their task. This is for the same reason that you should't run your {linux, windows} box as {root,Administrator}.

    hope this helps

Do the artists, whose music it is, see any of this money?

Why exactly DO record companies seem to require artists to sign over the copyright for their recordings? Could not, for example, the record companies accept "rights to artist's music for x years"?

Won't it be hard to do feedback mouse using an optical mouse?

I don't rate this at all. The article says it will "allow online shoppers, for example, to get a feel for the material they're buying" - exactly how we've come to expect from those Playstation controllers, I expect.

Basically a rotating motor (with an off-centre weight attached) just isn't going to be able to provide very much information to the user: like it says in the articke, things "can be made to feel metallic or rubbery", and I suspect that is all it can do. Obviously it is a slow motor rotation speed is "rubbery" and a fast motor rotation speed is "metallic". Then what else is there left to choose from?

Well, debian has over 500 developers last count, if I remember correctly, which is probably more than redhat et al. employ overall.
OK, these aren't full time employees, but then debian does have more packages than any other distribution, and I suspect that the process leads to packages which are more rigorously tested and checked than any other distribution.

  14. Re:Nonsense guys on Windows ME - The End Of UMSDOS And BeOSfs Over Vfat? · · Score: 1

The original intent of Win32s and Windows 95 might have been to be a stepping stone to NT, but Microsoft has been strangely really lax about the execution. They've almost purpously kept NT out of the mainstream market by keeping things like Plug'n'Play, USB support, and DirectX on the shelf for 3 to 4 years after the 9x folks got it.

To me this suggests that Microsoft are maintaining their revenue stream with the win9x line, up until the point at which they believe that they can successfully generate revenue stream from online (.NET) services, rather than continual revisions of software.

In my opinion they have done a rather good job of stretching their revenue generating mechanism, flying in the face of common sense. (win95->win98->win98se is not worth the cost by Microsoft's own standards - look at the cost of win3x to win9x, compared to the cost of win95-win98se, then look at the features. If anything Microsoft are charging more for less, so no wonder Billy G is the richest)
