  1. I'm going through this too on Usability Testing Hardy Heron With a Girlfriend · · Score: 1

I have decided to start learning how to use linux in case I ever wanted to switch. While I see why some people like it, I still see why it is never going to be widely adopted. For instance, I installed an antivirus program and cannot run an update on it unless i go do the sudo command even though there is a button in the gui. Documentation and instruction has also been increasingly frustrating. It seems like every set of instructions have a step in which i have to find OTHER documentation to do or they just tell me to do something without telling me where to go and what to type in. I end up so confused and frustrated that I move onto something else. Mac on the other hand is great. I would probably move to a mac rather than linux if i had to.

Then they will have too much power to continue these actions. On the flip side, constantly fighting these cases in court is not what RIAA wants to do. They want it settled and out of the way as soon as possible. Hopefully law students in each state all take up this cause pro bono. I say law students because they probably will be most likely to fight pro bono and save the defendants money but also they will probably fight as hard as anyone against the RIAA. Imagine putting that on your resume after law school...that you successfully brought down the RIAA.

Isn't this basically the same thing the RIAA has been doing to filesharers? post fake files on kazaa and then find the IP of anyone caught downloading it, get info from the cable company, then legal action. I don't agree with the FBI here and I think they went too far.

Watch them come out and say to the artists that after the RIAA recoups their loss, there's nothing left for the artist.

The laws need to catch up to technology. With everyone having camera phones and electronic devices at their disposal, it's not hard to record or videotape an event. I do agree that a citizen should not be able to follow around a cop all day and video tape him however what is so wrong about a person saying to a cop during a traffic stop "hold on, let me turn on my tape recorder or turn on my built in camera". Likewise, police record interrogations so why would anyone be against the innocent until proven guilty citizen being able to whip out his own tape recorder or camera to maintain his own copy of the events that take place.

  7. Re:Geek question... on Juror From RIAA Trial Speaks · · Score: 1

I had this same idea last time I went to jury duty. They eliminated jurors who knew or were familiar with topics to be covered in the trial. Basically, if this is a case involving computers and the internet, shouldn't a "jury of peers" be at least familiar with computers, internet, and IP addresses rather than someone who thinks such information is WAY over their head? Likewise I don't think I should have to serve on a jury if the case revolves around something I know absolutely nothing about. How can I effectively measure guilt or innocence in a case if I have no idea what the doohickeys and thingamabobs do...especially if the case revolves around them.

  8. i feel for her but on Juror From RIAA Trial Speaks · · Score: 1

I feel for her but i don't think she has a leg to stand on. If I was on the jury with my knowledge of the internet/ip address/kazaa, i could buy some of her defense about spoof. If she had a wireless router than that would have helped too. The fact that her kazaa name matched her aim and/or email address then that gave it away right there. If she was using kazaa lite and it showed up as the default username that it used, i probably wouldn't have ruled against her. Although even though I would have found her guilty, I probably would have held out on something like $10 per song in damages. Or better yet, $18 for a CD with 15 songs...so roughly $1 per song. I wouldn't award anymore to the RIAA. Speaking of, What would have happened if they couldn't agree on a price? I would been steadfast that I am not making a single mother pay $9000+ per song for something I can record off the radio.

  9. Fix the System on Ticketmaster Claims Hacking Over Ticket Resale Site · · Score: 1

i also hate these scalpers. Any major sporting event in NY/NJ is impossible to go to because scalpers buy up all the tickets. Ticketmaster should institute a system where a certain amount of tickets are set for resale...let's say 10% of total tickets available. When these ticketing systems call up to order tickets, they should have to say they are a reseller and tickets bought are deducted from that total leaving the other 90% to the general public. This makes the resellers fight against each other and not the fans. If resellers are selling tickets designated for fans then ticketmaster should be able to sue. If fans end up not being able to go, they can resell the ticket to their friends or whoever because that's under the table but if it goes up on ebay or other auction sites then they can be held liable too. Ticketmaster should also allow refunds to purchased tickets if a person can go. The fan, if they can't sell it, can return it back to the box office for the retail price. The ticket then becomes available at the box office at the time of the event. That's how I would fix it. Of course ticketmaster would have to start enforcing the rule and make sure tickets on ebay/stubhub etc are really tickets marked for resale

Getting prompted to do little stupid things is annoying and not being able to do things you did in XP is equally frustrating. Need to upgrade PC's. Many people don't want to run it on their 3 or 4 year old PC and have it run sluggishly. Oh, and activation. I have to say though, I just bought a new laptop with Vista Business and I didn't like it at first either. Now that I've been using it every day along with office 2007, I like it. Of course I had to turn UAC off though. Can't stand that. I think people will warm up to in once they start using it everyday.

No he did not see any filesharing SW on the pc, could not verify the MAC address, Could not verify how many PC's were behind the router, whether wireless was used...and most damaging that there are COUNTLESS ways to spoof an IP address. that alone BY THEIR EXPERT!!!...should get this lawsuit thrown out with the RIAA forced to pay lawyer fees and laughed out of court.

Why would I want to install a patch to WMP that "fixes" the way to get around DRM media? MS has money and it has lawyers so I'm sure we granted permission somewhere in the EULA but that doesn't make it ethical. MS gets away with a lot of things they do simply because they can. Who's going to stop them? and who's going to replace them? I was actually supportive of MS business practices up until XP came out. Activation, limited functionality, WGA, updating when I specifically said not to...I'm drawing the line here. Sell your product but keep your hands off once I have it.

So with that, just put a bumper sticker on the car that says activities within this car are taped and monitored at all times. Then when you get pulled over, turn the camera on. The cop has notice and if he doesn't want to be videotaped then maybe he shouldn't be pulled over. If you give him notice and it's within your own property then i don't think he can tell you to turn it off. of course he'd probably tell you to get out of the car and definately give you a ticket.

That is what everyone is complaining about and I think XM was wrong for doing so.

I guess you can't really sue your professor for checking your essay for plagiarism. However, I do think there is a case against the company because they are retaining the records. It would be one thing to just check a paper against known sources and if it checks out OK, it then clears it and releases it from the database. If this case goes anywhere then that might be what the company will have to start doing.

I hope this kid wins and forces the school district into a multimillion dollar settlement (i know that won't ever happen). You didn't have cases like this years ago because if someone complained about the school, who did they tell? a dozen people maybe a little more. but now with websites, his comments can be read by thousands of people and the school wants to stop it.
