I have to admit that I'm not running the latest release, since it was told that one of the updates broke gps antennas compatibility. Now that I have a standalone gps unit I'll update it; past updates did a lot in terms of performance and stability, but I still do despise them for shipping the phone with such a crappy firmware.
Half of Nokia's phone lineup are fully programmable, multi-tasking machines[...] ...which slow down to a crawl, since they really can't handle multitasking. Seriously, my N73 has GUI refresh problems if I keep open messages, address book and the call record. It would be more correct to say that the iphone has a better processor/ram than most (all?) other smartphones out there, so it should be doable. I call it for 2.5 software.
Promting the user is a lame way to circumvent the problem. Most people are gonna say "yes" anyway, and definitely don't stop ANYTHING malicious from happening.
Regarding background processes, I have this idea that Apple isn't just trying to render their own device useless. But that is just a silly thought I had.
Safari has an unpatched security issue Safari sucks. Safari is still a great browser, now it needs a security patch.
Tame that jungle by checking out what you're clicking.
The site you linked is down, so I really can't tell you why are they listing inexistent malware. "There's a site about it" just doesn't mean it's true. The only "viruses" or "trojans" that I heard of for mac os x in the last years required silly things like executing a file and even requesting the password. There are unpatched vulnerabilities, there are unknown vulnerabilities, there are proof of concepts, but this doesn't mean they're being exlpoited.
I agree that it is potentially dangerous. But as of now there are 0 (zero) exploits in the wild, so the casual user will remain convinced that he's safe - and he'll be right.
Apple hasn't reached the threshold yet, but all indications are that its just a matter of time.
But until that moment (which is always "later"), it's pure FUD.
I know, I was just being a bit of an IP Nazi. Returning IT, I think that Apple being the biggest player in the market of digital music they just won't screw up like newbies. I'm a bit skeptic that this will happen at all, given Jobs position on renting music, but we all know how this kind of preditions work.
Reading the freakin' specs? we're on slashdot!
Jokes apart, as of now there are NO android phones, so we can only hope. I seriously doubt that background processes will be a feature that determines my choice of a mobile terminal... and I think that millions of "common users" won't care either.
And thinking that one day I could happen into the system killing the application's process while it is doing important work. (quote from google's description), I'd rather keep drinking my monotasking koolaid.
...and that's one of the reasons I'm going to buy one as soon as I can. On my N73 I get an "out of memory" error while trying to zoom a picture I took with that same phone. If I open the address book, opening an image becomes impossible - "out of memory". Opening tomtom while the media gallery is open? No way.
So much for the freedom of having processes run in background.

You can use F2 to rename the file and alt-enter to see proprieties.

...everybody else is apparently quite happy to partecipate in bash Apple week(TM).

...and there was a WMF bug that lasted from 1990 (Windows 3.0) until 2006. 16 effing years.

"Double the killer delete select all." I think we're safe for now.
...features that every other major browser has already implemented, apparently.
If we exclude the vacuum cleaner, you're 100% right. There is apparently someone people who likes to have fun with vacuum cleaners.
To be sincere, it may seem you just described a mac.
Pretty easy, just as long you don't polarize the info you're communicating on a perpendicular plane.

Just a friendly reminder: according to IP and copyright laws around the world, the only music you own is the music you wrote (unless you sold that).
You mean like if Youtube videos got transcoded in H.264, or something like that?
Pizza with no crust? That's an inhuman experiment.
In soviet Russia, web surfs you!

For those of you who don't know what the Turing Test is (how did you manage to pass the CAPTCHA?)
Well, they did. Some months ago a russian scam based on these exact premises was uncovered.
