  1. Re:As of now on Mozilla Hitting 'Brick Walls' Getting Firefox on Phones · · Score: 1

If you want a non locked-down phone, go with Nokia. I am on my fifth one now (10 years later) and my second carrier (AT&T now). My phone has never been locked, it allows me to put anything on it. I want music? I can use my mp3's. I want video? I use Mediacoder to get it in the right format, and then no problems. I can put on any software I want, signed or not. The software to hook up my phone was even free from the website. As far as I can tell, they are the only manufacturer that work this way.

  3. A good idea on Video on Demand From the Public Library · · Score: 2, Interesting

This looks like it could be a great service, but I can't help but think the movie industry will fight this one to the death. On the one hand, the libraries already have the right to loan movies for free (by law) as well they should be able to. On the other hand, the libraries are unlikely to have deep enough pockets to battle it out with the industry. And it is highly unlikely they will just pass on the chance to fight this one out. If this goes as well as it could (for us) it would severely undercut the industry, therefore destroying the profitability of film making in general. This of course would put the industry into its death-throes. I suspect the argument they could make will be something like "The library may have x copies of the DVD that they purchase. Therefore, x people may borrow the DVD at a time." That seems reasonable I suppose, but would also make this service a lot let useful, as it could be weeks before you get to view your video.

  4. Other overpriced systems on PS3 Price Drop Won't Happen Anytime Soon · · Score: 2, Interesting

Does anyone remember the NeoGeo? It was a great system around the time of the Super Nintendo. It was 24 bit as opposed to the Nintendo and the Sega at 16 bits each.. It did have a couple good games, but it was a complete flop. Why? It cost 600 bucks, and no one I know ever had one. It had a lot of power under the hood, but the price point was way too high. And now Sony is at the same price point. I have always loved my playstations, but 600 bucks is to steep just to play games, even if it does have other features. I can always use Linux on my home computer, after all..

Are you making any profit off this? I.e. If this is a workshop people are not paying to attend then you are definately in the free and clear. If you are making profit off this, then you are definately not in the free and clear. If you are charging admission, but not really doing it for the sake of a profit, so much as just covering your costs, then you are probably ok. At any rate, if that is the case, then most likely no copyright holders are likely to bother you anyway. So why worry about it?

  8. Ogre 3d on Simple Open Source 3D Game Engines? · · Score: 5, Informative

Ogre is a great 3d graphics library, and cross platform.. Unfortunately it is not (nor will be) a complete gaming library. What I recommend is that you learn the c++ skills (which will serve you well) and use Ogre. Then you can make great games without having to learn the math involved (which is a lot) and the graphics rendering (which even with a masters in math I still think is a nightmare.)

I just installed this software to see what exactly it does. It just finds p2p software and all media. It tells you right up front that it can't tell the diff between legal and illegal media, that you must make up your mind.
