  1. $100 per balloon! on Why the World Is Running Out of Helium · · Score: 1
Right at the end, the number I was looking for:

Professor Richardson also believes that party balloons filled with helium are too cheap, and they should really cost about $100 to reflect the precious nature of the gas they contain.

That will be the day all the party stores start selling their Helium reserves to NASA.

  3. 2nd the Sony 505! on What to Seek in an Older Subnotebook? · · Score: 1

I have had a Sony 505 for the last five years. Upgraded the hard disk to 30GB. 300mhz, 128megs, runs XP with all non-required services disabled; only 96megs of ram in use at boot. I love the 1024x768 screen resolution (only in some models). I haven't had a battery for about three years, but with a 12v inverter and power adapters it has been fine. Only weighs 3lbs.

It's been across the country multiple times, and to much of Europe. Use it for photo storage, as a car mp3 player, web surfing, read books, and even once for emergency Flash development (client needed work while I was on the road.) I must admit, that I remote desktop to a VMware machine on my server to surf the web whenever possible. The 505 works, but it's terribly nice to have enough ram to open some tabs.

People/Clients/Friends are still amazed that it is a ten year old machine. Many people think that I just bought it.

  4. 3 months in Europe with a laptop on Gadgets You Backpack Around the World With? · · Score: 1

I backpacked for 3 months in Europe in 2003. The only electronics that I carried were my digital camera and the Sony 505tr laptop. The laptop is an extremely small 300mhz computer, weighing in at 4 pounds with power adapter. I upgraded the hard disk to 30gb for photo storage. It runs Windows XP with all options turned off(most services, all sounds, themes).

I met 3-4 people who had their electronic gear stolen, which just made me be even more careful. Since the laptop is so small, it is easily hidden. I would go for days at a time without mentioning or using it. When I deemed it safe, it was great to be able to watch SeaLab 2021 in Barcelona and South Park in Rome with some (seemly) trustworthy people at my hostels. More importantly, I was able to take as many pictures as I wanted. I needed not worry about filling up the two camera memory cards. I would take it again on another trip.

I met one guy, actually who worked at ILM, who had all of his pictures on his camera. The camera was stolen mid way through his trip. He told me that he didn't care at all about the camera, but he just wanted the two weeks of pictures back. I would have lost at most two days worth if my camera was lost or stolen.

Last thought, if you plan on taking a lot of pictures, you can't upload them all via the internet(subjective, you could wait). I brought back 2 gigs worth with a 3.2MP camera. Even without a laptop, I recommend a USB portable 2.5 drive.

  5. This needs emphasis on Using The GIMP (or Photoshop) to Improve Photos? · · Score: 1

If you want high quality digital pictures, you must get a better digital camera. A point and shoot (such as a Olympus 7.1MP) will produce significantly lower image quality than a DSLR. You may be surprised, but a lower MP DLSR will take better pictures than a higher MP point and shoot.

Check out the reviews and especially the sample photos of the following:
Olympus E-330 Point and Shoot (7.4MP) Like to yours
    Nikon D50 DSLR (6MP)
    Canon XTi DSLR (10MP)

  8. rm -rf c:\windows\ on 10 Computer Mishaps · · Score: 1

Back in 1994, I decided to install Slackware on my parent's system. Soon the extra space on the 420meg drive was needed. Instead of just removing the Linux partition and resizing the C: partition, I figured that I would be clever. I would delete Linux while it was running to see what would happen.

I ran "rm -rf *" in /. After about 10 minutes, I realized that I had mounted the DOS drive in /dos to access some files. Linux was deleting Windows! Not that that would be a bad thing normally, but my parent's accounting data was there.

I reset the system. Windows did not load but the system booted. Luckily for me the data was still there, although most of the software was gone.

Now I use my stupidest computer mistake as my nick.
