My point is this : these experts explained that the only way to make the vote truly verifiable is to have a paper trail for each vote. I believe RMS said something similar about this problem.

This is in fact something I like about google : they try to be friendly to joe average user, but not to the point of thinking all their users are brain-dead.

Personally I would tend to agree with you because I still use Windows Me (old computer). However I'm pretty sure people said the same thing about XP (and indeed 98 and NT4 are still widely used), yet XP -with its many flaws and few improvements- is all over the place today, because it got adopted gradually as former versions of Windows became obsolete. You get new hardware, it requires XP, you get XP. I mean, you're a /.er, you know it has worked before, and will work again (although maybe with a little less success, as Linux is more usable than 5 years ago).

When people started using Google instead of Altavista or Yahoo, it was IMHO because Google was better than Yahoo and Altavista was selling out and turning into sheer crap. If Ask wants to grab some market share, it will not do to be as good as Google or to offer a couple of extra nice features, even if that's an impressive feat; they will have to be so much better that people will not want to use Google anymore. Good luck to them...

I'm Belgian, and here we've had mandatory id cards forever. We're supposed to carry it at all times, and show it to policemen if asked.
