  1. Re:Nice FUD but... on Gates On Future of CS Education · · Score: 1

Thank you for saying this!!! I keep reading these eggagerated posts on how crappy everything is, while my future seems bright. I'm a 22-year-old MIS college student and the recruiters are swooning over me. Yeah, I'm not a CS major (I admit I'm not a 'programmer,' though I do know how to program), but I still intend to work in the IT world. I'm interning right now for a large corporation, and from what I can see, the sky is not falling.

  2. Re:Hmmm doesn't look too bad from my end on The Changing Face of Computer Science · · Score: 1

I just wanted to mention that it isn't only the math or the supposed difficulty of CS classes that makes someone change from CS to MIS. I never had a problem with math, and as a matter of fact, my grades were pretty good when I was in CS. However, I also had an interest in business. Instead of majoring in CS and having a minor in Business, I am majoring in MIS and have a minor in English (another passion of mine). I see myself not as a programmer (though I am decent enough at programming), but as a person who can apply technology solutions to business situations. So far, recruiters see me as very desirable...

There will always be a need for people with technical skills in the business world (and ones who live in the US). It's just that companies are now expecting more from thier IT professionals. People need a broader range of skills than just programming... they need communication skills, they need to understand how businesses operate, they need to be able to do anything that will get the desired results. There are some functions that you cannot ship overseas. There is some data that you don't want to trust with anybody outside the company.

I don't know... I just think a lot of they guys here are overestimating the problem with IT jobs. Some sound downright bitter. I admit, I don't have gobs of work experience to back me up... maybe I'm just listening too much to the pretty words of the recruiters. But, my experience is that it isn't that companies don't want IT people, it's that they want IT people with leadership skills, communication skills, and teamwork skills. And you know what, many IT-skilled individuals are pig-headed, think they are smarter than they actually are, and will not get along with other people. That's why they can't get a job, not because their job was shipped to India. That sounds like an excuse for not being flexible to me.

  3. Re:Shark Repellent on How the Batsuit Works · · Score: 2, Informative

I remember it vividly (and I have the movie), so I'll give ya'll the complete version.... It is indeed in the old Batman version. Batman and Robin are on the Batcopter following a yacht. Batman tells Robin to take the controls so he can go down the Bat ladder (with a sign on it saying "Bat Ladder"), only to realize just as his foot is touching the water that the yacht is really a hologram. As he pulls out his foot, turns out he's got a shark on his toe. First, Batman tries to shake it off... but when that fails he calls to Robin to get the Bat Shark Repellent. Robin gets out a case full of various sprays, including I think Bat Squid Repellent, etc. He gets the repellent and climbs down the Bat ladder. He hands the repellent to Batman, the Dark Night sprays, the shark falls, and EXPLODES when it hits the water! Yes, folks... it was a "trained exploding attack shark." Later in the movie, a "trained exploding attack octopus" is mentioned, but that creature is never shown on screen.... a minion blows it up.

Yeah, if you're such a stud, how come you can't write a sentence with even decent grammar? I'm not fat. I'm not ugly. And you know what? I know nerds ARE better lovers. And you know what? They DO have sex lives, they just don't feel the need to brag about it to their other egotistical "friends."

  5. My Word on Love and Nerds on Nerds Make Better Lovers · · Score: 1

I may just be wierd, but I think nerds make better boyfriends than non-nerds. Most can have an intelligent conversation, which is more than I can say for most of the population in the world. Most are generally nicer (I hang out with several, and I rarely need to open a door for myself.) Most tend to be individuals (there is nothing I hate more than a cookie-cutter person.) Also, most conventionally handsome guys I've met have been real assholes. They think too highly of themselves. However, I may not be an authority... I also like nerds because they enjoy the things I enjoy (RPGs, good books, computer stuff.) But am I a nerd girl? I'm not a supermodel, but I'm not greasy and fat either. On that note, I hear a lot of you here on /. describing nerds as greasy, fat, and living with their mothers... I don't think that is the norm. Most of the nerds I know may not be conventionally handsome (with rippling muscles and fashionable hair), but they tend to be very clean at least. Also, it seems assumed that all nerds are fat. Most of my friends aren't. Can we say 'stereotype?' I'm a college student, and most of the nerds I know are either adults or other college students who live on their own. Several are going for engineering degrees, which means they will be able to support themselves. If they live end up living with their mothers, it is because they are taking care of her or saving money for a house. I don't know about other girls (and I mean other girls worth getting - ones who aren't stupid sluts), but I find commen sense attractive.
