  1. Google Unveils Code Search on Google Unveils Code Search · · Score: 1

I also vote for including Component Pascal (Oberon) in the Google code search. There is an international communitiy of users who could benefit from this.

  2. No good portraits of scientists on Favorite Film Scientists? · · Score: 1

I have yet to see any portrait of scientists that captures how they think and actually operate.

  3. Persuasive writing on Teaching Engineers to Write? · · Score: 1

I recommend the banishment of the term 'impact'. Whatever happened to 'effect' and 'affect'? One also needs to stress that 'I played good' is not correct. 'I played well' is. Also, one should use 'May I help you?' rather than 'Can I help you?'

  4. Paper-like books on eBooks - What's Holding You Back? · · Score: 1

The problem I have with e-books is the form factor. They look like slates and not books. They are also unreliable. Here is what I want. o A 'book' that has two pages with a spine that can be closed and opened. o A 'book' that retains its image for 10 years. It uses no energy to display a page but only to change a page (see eink, etc). o A book that gathers its energy from the sun. Photovoltaic cells on its front and back cover. o A book full of blank pages. Pages that I can write on with a stylus. o A book that can convert my handwriting to printed form. o A book that can check my mathematics (proof checker) o A book that can down and upload information from the web. o A book that can hold a library's worth of information (1,000 books). So, that is all I want.

  5. Zero energy import on What Would Be Your Ideal Futuristic Home? · · Score: 1

The home I would like to see would have minimal dependency. That's right. A home that runs by itself without the need for a large infrastructure to maintain it. This would mean that it gathers its own energy from the sun and wind and geothermal. Electronic dependency would be minimized. I recently installed motion detector switches in the upstairs hall way which is convenient but really are superfluous. Wireless internet connection for communication would minimize the need for cables and connection services. BUT increases one's dependency upon chip manufacturers and and sofware designers. In my opinion less is more. We need to do more walking.

  6. Re:Composer on SeaMonkey 1.0 Released · · Score: 1

Savala, Thank you very much! Unfortunately that is not a solution for me. I already use Firefox and Thunderbird for my web and email/news access and do not wish to install yet another system. All I want is to be able to compose web pages. I have NVU but it is inadequate since it does not (seem) to support Greek symbols which I need for mathematical technical postings. Still looking for a free web page composer. Thank you again.

  7. Composer on SeaMonkey 1.0 Released · · Score: 1

At least twice over the last year that Mozilla has said it has a web page composer and yet I have never found it. In the current SeaMonkey release there is no component called "Composer". Where is it?

  8. Re:Galileo is a weapon of war against the USA on Galileo Sends Its First Signals · · Score: 1

The "Subject" of this discussion was about the supposed use of Galileo as a weapon of war against the USA. Of course the European countries have been fighting wars long before the U.S. was founded. That implies nothing about what they intend to with the Galileo project. Your response was a nonsequitur (an inference that does not follow from the premises). Question: What do you feel about England? Do you think they are out to get us? Do you think the French are also? Do you think the Italians are? There is much more to this world than just the American view. I think you need to do some world traveling.

  9. Re:Galileo is a weapon of war against the USA on Galileo Sends Its First Signals · · Score: 2, Insightful

Paranoid? Why think "war"? How about a simple matter of "security" on the part of the Europeans? The fact that the US of A has invaded another country is more than enough to give Europeans pause.

  10. Froebel and Kindergarten on Technology to Help with Learning Disabilities? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Friedrich Froebel, who was mentally challenged, founded the idea of the kindergarten. He used sandpaper blocks for each letter so that children could have a tactile feel for them and use other sensory modalities to reinforce memory of them. The Montessori teaching methods use similar approaches to Froebel's (see http://www.montessori.edu/). Repetition until mastery is what is needed. For your brother that may take a long time but wont it be great if he succeeds?
