  1. Re:May be a hint of how the book scanning will go. on Google's Cache Ruled Fair Use · · Score: 0

I think the content in question here, was passively licensed by placing it in a publicly accessible format as the internet. Without the use of any robots.txt or meta tags to prevent engines from traversing the content and by not protecting the content via any type of password protection, etc he opened the content up freely.

I think with the books, google employees (or temps) have to physically get a book, scan it into the system, catalog it and make it available. By making it available to someone without the consent (in my opinion they should have an opt-in policy, not an opt-out policy for exclusion) of the owner of the IP contained within the book they have committed copyright violations on the same grounds that the RIAA seem to be suing many over. Making copyrighted material available online or in any format without consent or licensing is illegal. It's literature piracy.

Yes, this is just my opinion but I have a few books published and know how I feel on the subject.

  2. Re:May be a hint of how the book scanning will go. on Google's Cache Ruled Fair Use · · Score: 0

I think it may be a little bit different. If I put up a copy of an article I've written for viewing on my web site I have essentially published it for the masses freely. Sure, If someone tries to steal it I should, under law have copyright protection keeping someone from publishing it later and making money off of it.

However, if I have a book that is written and sold with the contents not available online I see it being a little bit different. Google has to violate my copyright to scan or copy the material of the book into electronic form then they are hosting the copyrighted material on their website without my consent. Anyone remember the sign above the photocopier in the university library with warnings about copyright violations??

If I had made the contents of the book available on my web site as free content and they cached the page, I don't think there would be anything anyone could do.

We blame ourselves. Either we get rid of the sun and get used to a long cold winter (forever) or we get used to hotter days. ...if not for us....for our children.

True, but I know quite a few people who believe there is no religious center or left. If you bring up that someone is religious, they are automatically a right wing nut. Just ran into that last weekend. Politics today divides people more than religion and when you throw the two together in opposition it gets nasty.

I grow weary of hearing the whole "Embrace and extend, extinguish" chant that ALWAYS comes up in a /. thread regarding Microsoft.

I'm just thankful you didn't link to the Wikipedia article (which is also a paranoid, laughable attempt at discrediting MS)

Tons of people complain about MS not doing something like the other browsers. Tabbed pages, standard support, etc. Then, when MS does something that brings them to bring them up to date with the complaints, they get hit with the EEE (Embrace extend extinguish) attack.

If MS changed something to be more in line with standards the anti-MS chicken littles would be running around screaming MS was about to extend standards (is that such a bad thing?? especially when it goes back into the standard like so many W3C MS contributions?) or that they are going kill something. MS cannot win in this environment. It's too full of technological bigotry.

Actually, you seem to fail to realize that the govt may not give money to drug addicts for drugs but to homeless people (who are homeless because of legalized drugs, ie can't hold job, etc) who turn around and spend their money on drugs. All that occurs here is "feeding" a problem and never correcting it.

A country as liberal/socialistic as the Netherlands should have the homeless problem completely take care of. There should be no beggars, after all, the goverment cares for all. Government healthcare, government subsidies for almost everyhing! It just tells me that so much of the "platforms" being used in politics today in America "for the sake of the people" just doesn't work and I've seen it first hand.

I worked in the Netherlands quite a while...was interesting. We can all agree that the Netherlands are pretty much a liberal, socialist type goverment right? Everything is paid for by the government. Need a place to stay while going to college? Here - have some govt money.... Since there is so much paid for by the govt I was amazed that there are homeless everywhere in Amsterdam. At the train station in Rotterdam - getting rushed by homeless people asking for money. So, people get govt handouts and spend their money on the legalized drugs (which a huge percentage goes back to the govt) and they end up being homeless. Handouts just don't work in many cases especially when legalization of subtances that are addictive and impair your judgement while being harmful are so easily obtained.
