  1. Re:Run, don't walk, away on Future of Financial Mathematics? · · Score: 1

The trouble is, baroque complexity of financial instruments and transactions was the primary concealment tool that allowed all the lying in the first place - lying to other institutions, to regulators, and certainly to the public that handed over all their dough at low interest because the institutions were so guaranteed-safe; and I suspect, they managed to lie to themselves.

The fundamental problem at this point is that the financial sector is dishonest, all that lying, starting with lying to itself. Does anyone in it even know what the truth is? They have been telling different lies to different people for so long, perhaps they can no longer tell the difference between what is true and what is false. And I should trust my money to these charlatans and liars!? I didn't get hurt so bad as many, but I wouldn't trust them, and suspect that those who were badly burned or who knows others who were badly burned--and that is a lot of people--won't trust them any time soon.

Hmmh. You may be right. Given that everyone downgrading from VISTA to XP is--almost by definition--a Windows user, what does this say about Windows-lover's opinion of VISTA? Here, have a couple of "meaningless" anecdotes ;-)

Meaningless Anecdote 1: One of my colleagues went to upgrade to VISTA a few days back. I'm only surprised it took him so long, as he has been dutifully following the MS upgrade treadmill since before WIN95, a Windows-lover's Windows-lover. VISTA refused to install on a 2.2GHz AMD64 with 2GB RAM. He is such a happy camper he started asking me about Linux. He is also tired of viruses, spyware worms etc. I burned the 5.3 LiveDVD of Scientific Linux for him, so he can see if he likes it and wants to install it.

Meaningless Anecdote 2 I installed Zenwalk Linux on my 79 year old Mom's compromised (by malware) XP computer two weeks ago. She does have an occasional question, however, she's enjoying the use of her computer again. :-)

    Have a nice day.

I think they pretty well explained their interest in the case when they said:

As an organization dedicated to the rights of computer users and their interaction with copyrighted works, we are concerned with the RIAA's attempt to redefine copyright law through legal proceedings against individuals who are generally unable to defend themselves.

Ray, do you think that the redefinition of copyright law may be the real goal of the RIAA, MPAA and other organizations of their ilk? You and others have occasionally said that the ill-will that is being created cannot possibly be balanced by the monetary payoff. If there is no monetary payoff, there must be an intangible payoff, and the erosion and elimination of user's rights could be an immediate goal. Thinking a little further, taking control of peoples' systems and turning it over to the cartels could have an enormous, if not unlimited, long-term payoff. The thought of root-kitting creeps like these being in control of everything is scary stuff. Glad I've been supporting the FSF.

Intuitively we grasp that our actions have consequences, and that, in order to get the consequences we want, we have to choose the right actions.

We all do stupid things, and a lot of people try to pass off the responsibility for their actions to other people, but as a society we have decided to hold each accountable for their own deeds.

Not sure where you got the idea that I'm walking around disbelieving in free will. It's been 20yrs since I doubted it. It is far better than being a pawn. Baseless paranoia? STAC, Netscape, the rape of JAVA are baseless? Besides, it is hardly paranoia when they are out to get you, and MS has made it abundantly and crystal clear that that is their goal. Some MS evaluations of Linux etc.: "cancer" ... "communistic"... And, then there are the infamous Halloween Documents. Ultimately mono/.net developers can code anything they want with mono/.net. That's their choice. The beauty of Linux and BSD is that they can't force it on a free (= libre) system. They and MS can cram mono/.net down Windows users throats and up Windows users' asses, but they can't force me to install it on my machine. That's my choice. I will use nothing but the cli first. Hell, there's not even much reason to think Microsoft would want to torpedo Mono. They wouldn't have submitted their standard to ECMA if they didn't want it to be implemented.

Are you 100% certain? People have suggested (and it makes sense to me) that the current MS Office XML scheme (double entendre intended) was submitted to ECMA to fast track it to ISO so that once it was approved, MS could claim that their formats were open. That's a far cry from wanting anyone (other than themselves) to actually implement or even be to able to implement it correctly.

Suppose you are right and MS does want mono to be implemented and succeed in Linux, BSD, etc. Why? Out of the goodness of their hearts?!! Or is it a poison pill? Are you really 100% sure? I'm not. apt-get remove --purge mono libmono ....
