Nothing would please me more than to be able to drop IE but at work they've decided to buy a program that just won't support anything but IE. I'm told that this is because Moz/FF doesn't support VB and "dynamic xml". I guess they're right that Moz/FF don't support VB as I don't expect this to work on anything but Windows but what about the dynamic xml part?

Oh how sweet it would be to tell the vendor to take their crappy program and "shovel it" (to quote Lt. Lenina Huxley) since we need to be able to access it from any platform.

I mean, we're all a bunch of whiny geeks here so they don't listen to us, but surely they must see the bigger perspective. If we allow SWPAT in the EU then we will practically give away the entire IT sector to the US (and subsequently India) since 90% or so of the SWPATs that's out there are owned by large American companies.

Why would the EU want to do that? What's the benefit? I just don't understand. Did someone wake up and think "Well, this IT thingy is too compllicated, let's just focus on agriculture instead. Let's give all IT stuff to USA, and let them figure it out."?

This is one of my pet peeves when it comes to Linux. Why do I have to have one RH9, one MDK, one SuSE and one Fedora just to be able to redistribute my package to the largest rpm-based distributions.

I was introduced to chroots not to long ago and this made my life a little more simple. Just create a small partition of your disk, install a distribution there, don't update the boot partition and move the new dist to a directory on your system. Then just cd into that dir and chroot. Whammo, instant mandrake/suse/redhat/fedora. =)
    Atleast for devel purposes.

Mandrake is not "mostly presentation". Mandrake is true to the GPL and all work that they do are licensed under the GPL in a true OpenSource manner. They also focus on usability.
Most people that _use_ computers want something that "just works".

I wouldn't call myself a newbie and MDK is still my flavour of choice when it comes to my work-machine. Easy upgrades, nice interface, everything just works. It's just what I want it on one machine.

This is not to say that others don't have the same benefits, but I haven't found another distro that combines the above things. True_to_GPL+Simplicity+Good_UI+User_friendly+Power = MDK

Also, I think they are the only big one left to focus on users. All others seems to have gone "Enterprise" now.
