"I still can't quite 100% dump IE." Amen to that. Nothing would please me more than to be able to drop IE but at work they've decided to buy a program that just won't support anything but IE. I'm told that this is because Moz/FF doesn't support VB and "dynamic xml". I guess they're right that Moz/FF don't support VB as I don't expect this to work on anything but Windows but what about the dynamic xml part?
Oh how sweet it would be to tell the vendor to take their crappy program and "shovel it" (to quote Lt. Lenina Huxley) since we need to be able to access it from any platform.
...I cannot for the life of me understand why EU would think that SWPAT is a good idea. I still live in this fantasy that the politicians should serve their people and their country, and I don't see that these patents do any good to either. I mean, we're all a bunch of whiny geeks here so they don't listen to us, but surely they must see the bigger perspective. If we allow SWPAT in the EU then we will practically give away the entire IT sector to the US (and subsequently India) since 90% or so of the SWPATs that's out there are owned by large American companies.
Why would the EU want to do that? What's the benefit? I just don't understand. Did someone wake up and think "Well, this IT thingy is too compllicated, let's just focus on agriculture instead. Let's give all IT stuff to USA, and let them figure it out."?
This is one of my pet peeves when it comes to Linux. Why do I have to have one RH9, one MDK, one SuSE and one Fedora just to be able to redistribute my package to the largest rpm-based distributions.
I was introduced to chroots not to long ago and this made my life a little more simple. Just create a small partition of your disk, install a distribution there, don't update the boot partition and move the new dist to a directory on your system. Then just cd into that dir and chroot. Whammo, instant mandrake/suse/redhat/fedora. =) Atleast for devel purposes.
I don't know much about windows but I imagine that this is one thing that they've managed to nail down. Something created on XP have a fair chance of running on other windows. Or am I misinformed?
I've had some trouble with wireless devices and speed. It seems like whenever I add a linux-box to my wireless network the accesspoint drops to 10mbit or something since this is the only speed that those Linuxes support (Mdk9.2 for one). Highly annoying. Yes it works, but it doesn't work well.
That said, MDK is still my favourite distro and I gladly run it. I'm just hoping for the AMD64 version to come out.
That's another company that was struck by Sasser. Nothing worked for a little over a day there. I wonder if these things are counted in the TCO of owning windows...
The company is one of Swedens largest insurance companies, it's called "IF" and I think I'll change to a company that has their shit more in order.
I don't agree (surprise surprise). Mandrake is not "mostly presentation". Mandrake is true to the GPL and all work that they do are licensed under the GPL in a true OpenSource manner. They also focus on usability. Most people that _use_ computers want something that "just works".
I wouldn't call myself a newbie and MDK is still my flavour of choice when it comes to my work-machine. Easy upgrades, nice interface, everything just works. It's just what I want it on one machine.
This is not to say that others don't have the same benefits, but I haven't found another distro that combines the above things. True_to_GPL+Simplicity+Good_UI+User_friendly+Power = MDK
Also, I think they are the only big one left to focus on users. All others seems to have gone "Enterprise" now. Perhaps MKD will be the Windows of Linux, Gates et al didn't try to go "Enterprise" until they had the home users... *hmmmmm....*
About a year and a half ago I was searching high and low for an free open source voice recognition implementation. Preferrably one that I could help develop a language for, if mine wasn't implemented. I wanted to use my computer as a dictaphone, just talk to it and get the text into the computer and later just correct and rewrite the parts I didn't like. I couldn't find one. Sure, NaturallySpeaking and ViaVoice are there but none of them free and open what I could see. ViaVoice had been taken off the market AFAIR and NS was only availible through retailers.
Is there something like this for Linux? How well does it work if it's there? If Opera does this I can only hope that it spurs Mozilla/Firebird or whomever to do something similar. That's one of the strengths of open-source. At least I hope so.
Here's one: This is a Swedish bank that needs to fix their site. Feel free to send them a friendly mail if You're swedish. I really think they should wise up. Also, it appears to be a domino powered website.:-)
Say what? GCC is included, although perhaps not installed, in MDK9.2.
If You've setup your sources correctly You should only type: "urpmi gcc" to get it. Or use the install GUI where You just have to search for and then tick the GCC checkbox to have everything installed for You.
What I can't figure out is why Mandrake hasn't put out a good rpm for this. It seems that almost every other distro has a package on the download page. I find it interesting that Mandrake that is supposed to be one of the major players that supports KDE doesn't have a package there. Nor can I find it in PLF's (Penguin Liberation Front) packages.
I think this could be very bad for Windows security (yeah, oxymoron, I know). This is bad news for all that in some way have to support windows at work. Since we all agree that all code has bug in them and since this code is out we can safely assume that some bugs will be found. Now all the white-hat hackers are prevented by law to take a look at the code and since all black-hat hackers don't give a damn about that law, those who run windows are in a pretty bad place right now. Even worse than usual actually.
Oh well, the windows admins who like working overtime will love the coming year I suspect.

Where I live (Sweden) You are not allowed to use the word "free" (or gratis which is the translation) in an ad without really giving it away. Free (gratis) means no strings attached here so if someone sais "Buy one, get one for free" You can actually go in and ask to have the "free" one and they can't deny You that. If You know your rights.
Naturally noone in their right mind uses the word "gratis" in ads anymore here.:-)
One could only hope that our government would disallow more bastardisations of words (and standards).
Having a monopoly because You are the only player in the market or if You are the best player in the market is plain old capitalism, and perfectly legal.
It's even OK to keep the competition out by having so low prices that they can't compete.
What we see here is Microsoft finally acknowledging that Linux is a serious OS that is more than capable to compete with their products.
Another good thing with this is that when Microsoft starts to talk about Linux, more people will investigate Linux. Perhaps not exactly what MS wants but I think that might be the end result.
Oh yes. mod_perl is a real showstopper for me. I'd love to upgrade to Apace2.x but I really need mod_perl to function properly and it isn't ready so I'm sticking with 1.3 for now.
Does anyone know the status of mod_perl? Should I try to lessen my dependency on it? Is 2.0 worth the upgrade even if I have to rewrite my app?

I don't know about You, but I'd like to have this information before I purchased a car. How else am I going to make an informed purchase that is so important in our capitalistic society?
Funny, I've always heard that IE is "Holier than the pope". .haeger
Amen to that.

A good read for those interested.

You don't have to pay to download and use. Also, don't confuse freedom and no-cost. Linux is free as in freedom.
Highly annoying.

That reminds me of something I find very funny. In French, the name HP is pronunced something like "hash pee".
Perhaps I need to grow up.

More expo for Linux. We win!
Jim McCoy wrote MojoNation based on the advice he got from them. MojoNation has since then evolved into Mnet and HiveCache.
I think You can find him on irc://irc.freenode.net/mnet or mail him on mnet-devel on Sourceforge.
He should know more about this.
Ahh, but it's not a standard is it? It's a trade secret.
