Most people are not competent to write their own encryption system. It takes a lot of very advanced math and a very careful implementation to make a secure comm system.
Last time I checked there were many hundreds of millions of people on the Internet.
Are you saying none of them can roll a new encryption scheme?
We used to do stuff with only 50 people working worldwide on stuff.
I think you just want to believe it's "too hard" so you don't have to do any actual work.
I agree with someone who suggested one of the early pre-NSA encryption schemes.
You'd be better to roll your own, mind you. Remember, they already have your make files if you used Win 8 or Win 8.1, since it "indexes your local drive for fast search" which is a polite way of saying "spies on you".
Fleet vehicles would have even higher savings from using battery swap electric trucks. Economy of scale. But at least Elon Musk is thinking of the logistics train requirements on the commercial side.
Some recent tests show that you can even get decent power from large trains using fuel cells powered by wind/solar used to split H2O that are competitive with coal (various Energy science papers)
I don't know that I see swap-out systems winning over the Texas truck market. Convenience counts to busy people.
You obviously have never had to fill your truck at the pump. Most farmers and ranchers already have their own untaxed fuel storage - or at least did in Texas when we lived on a farm.
Swapping out an electric battery as Elon Musk suggests, takes about as long as getting gas at most pumps.
My only concern is that it's a single provider, so we have artificial barriers to true competition.
Another reason I uninstall apps is if they complain when I turn the phone or tablet on Airplane Mode, or demand to connect to the internet and keep bugging me about it.
For the most part I don't ever uninstall an app. I get a new phone every year and a half or so, so why bother? If I don't use it, I just won't reinstall it on the new phone.
Have to agree with this. I had FB and some apps on my iPad2, broke that, got an iPhone5, did not reinstall FB and some other apps on purpose.
FB just got to pervy, so it's gone. Same thing will happen to other apps.
Who owns the satellites? Where are they (the owners, not the satellites) located? Can the US Government successfully pressure the owners to cause the satellites to be shut down? If so, then no, no raids will be necessary.
Who? Mostly Canada and Russia.
The Canadian ones already comply, but the Russian ones have their own off switches.
Not just the NSA, but the TSA aswell. Myself and many other Canadians that I know refuse to vacation in the States anymore because of the invasive border checks.
Actually, they even do that to families of American citizens who visit Canada, as they recently did when one family drove to a wedding in Canada from Detroit.
Welcome to the Police State of East Germany! Oh, wait, America... same thing.
And that is a basic consumer response to an inferior crippled service.
It's why most people are going to go for the less-intrusive less-pervy PS4 instead of the always-recording always-secret-police-enabled 1984 version of the xBox One.
They weren't trying to kill your relatives. They tried to kill my uncle, my brother, and my foster brother (Boston plane, WTC office, Pentagon office) and failed.
TSA is a farce. Anyone with actual counter-terrorism ops experience knows it. Even the military knows it, but they love the contracts.
1. Spying on the Middle East and Pakistan/Afghanistan. 2. Police interrogation techniques (not torture, that never works - ever) 3. Not harassing American citizens other than domestic terrorists like the Tea Party. 4. Defunding overseas wars of adventure we can't afford that have very long logistics chains and letting people solve their own problems and China lose their ships and oil facilities if need be.
"Various citations. Not going to do your work for you." it's not work. it's courtesy in a discussion. You might want to learn how the internet was designed to be used.
It was designed so scientists could get work done and the wobbly wobbly web was designed so we could get beamtime instead of using finger all the time.

And yet, his comments on this article are completely correct.
oh come now, it's not like my critics are all ACs ... oh wait ... ;->~
Thanks, Antipater.

Citizens have rights.
You, however, look like you may be an Enemy Combatant.
Doubt it. I served. You swerved.
Seven years, bub.
That's what they said in Nazi Germany.
"I vas just following orders".

I noticed that one part of our Thursday night Environmental Sciences discussion was about both this cookbook and the $80 app for it.
Not everything is black and white. Just because he believes in Feudal IP Baronies does not mean the cookbook isn't good.

This is slashdot. Take a wild guess at which (s)he is talking about.
Given that women are a majority of new tech hires in the US, this is still a valid question.
It's 2013, not 1993.

I have the wifi and cell off for a reason.
If you can't cope with that - you're gone.
...I replace the entire phone instead.

Reasons why I uninstall apps.
1. Ads
2. Ads with sound
3. Ads with motion
4. Ads that burn up bandwidth.
I don't care how much I paid for them. Too many ads and you're GONE.
We already have that data. All the traffic light license plate cameras feed into a tracking program already.
We're just not admitting we have it.
See the difference?
If we admit we already know it, you'll get upset that you live in East Germany, not America ...
If you're a sheep.
If you like being a Serf.
In that case, it's great!
It's not like it would affect either Internet 2 or the secret backbone used by NSA and other mil intel.
You have to remember the commercial internet was originally the same kind of system, we only made it public later.

Those weren't cable breaks a few years back, you know.
You can't disclose plans when you've already installed it.

Markets are made up of consumers.

We know what works.
What works is:
1. Spying on the Middle East and Pakistan/Afghanistan.
2. Police interrogation techniques (not torture, that never works - ever)
3. Not harassing American citizens other than domestic terrorists like the Tea Party.
4. Defunding overseas wars of adventure we can't afford that have very long logistics chains and letting people solve their own problems and China lose their ships and oil facilities if need be.
That works.
I think you mean fusion.
Looking good but I'm sure it will be news when it finally rolls out, though.
LOL.
You're new here, aren't you?
It's called market research - people don't want to buy cruft. Just because you love cruft doesn't mean the market has to meet your individual needs.
How's your betamax working?

It was NOT designed for you noobs.
Now get off my electronic lawn.
