  1. Does this prove Intelligent Design is flawed? on Humanity Gene Found? · · Score: 2, Funny

Because, if God was such a bad programmer he had to encode it 220 times, instead of making an efficient coding paradigm that used only say three segments for backup ... well ...

Or does it mean chimps run Linux and only need 22 code segments to do what Humans (Windows) needs 220 code segments to get done?

Wow. Doubly offtopic. Once for the lame joke, and once because you're pimping your website.

And it was a really lame joke he made.

Hey, if anyone's on Facebook, feel free to join my Seminar Junkies group - I'm the guy in the cape.

Remember, even if we have 220 segments and chimps have 37 segments, it doesn't mean we know what they do, or how they impact other gene-encoding regions - it's only recently we started figuring out most of the segments we thought were "noise" are actually responsible for encoding other genes, due to transcription and folding "errors" - yet which make us what we are.

  4. As I recall this is a flipped segment on Humanity Gene Found? · · Score: 2, Interesting

which was puzzling at first, because it's literally flipped around from the chimp gene, and actually is similar to a dog segment. Turns out a lot of what we thought were different gene segments folded wrong and literally reassembled upside down (backwards).

However, just remember that just because we may have found a segment doesn't mean we understand how it works. Sometimes, it's not just the genes it encodes, it's how it impacts other genes on other chromosomes, and how it misfolds or affects transcription errors.

Every day we learn more and more, and understand less and less. But it's fascinating work, and is leading to greater understanding of what makes us tick - even though we are all different and the variation among us homo sapiens is greater than the difference between homo sapiens and a chimp. Sometimes, you may find you may have more genetically in common with someone from Borneo when you're from Germany than you do with another person from Germany.

[note - if I'm wrong about the flip, my apologies, it's been a summer with few seminars - reading the papers is harder in some ways]

Seriously, I was at a few seminars here at the UW by one of the Cambridge scholars who had an actual real cure for 50 percent of all cancers, which involves a literal heating of the interior of cells, triggering an apotosis chain that causes cell death in 99.99 percent of all cancer cells (of that type) while only killing less than 1 percent of normal cells. It's in trials in the UK and elsewhere and won't be available before probably 2016.

The method mentioned is a technique - it increases the rate, and is a great discovery, but is not a "cure" for "cancers". It's just better than what we have now.

Is it more cost effective? Yes.

Is it more efficient at just taking people up to orbit? Yes.

Does it mean we've given up our expansive dreams in space? Yes.

All three are true. Whether we wish to acknowledge it or not, at this point the space race is more likely to be between China and Japan, with the EU and the USA following behind.

Is it better than a Mercury capsule? Sure.

Is it an improvement on the Shuttle? Doubtful at best, but you know they're spinning it that way.

However, it is possible this is more suitable to the space aims of a diminished nation that is at best an equal player with the EU, China, and Japan - and may even use less fuel to get the same basic job done.

Not every school can be like the one my son goes to, where they get Bill Gates to give them 40 WinXP desktops with flatscreen LCD monitors, and Apple gives them an entire computer lab to crank out the student newspaper on.

Most schools can't even get the school district to pay for a single computer per classroom before grade 6.

So, don't be surprised if the concerns stated are mostly those of parents - they're the ones who got the computers in the first place.

And, yes, they thought you were going to use them to study on and do homework, and it never occurred to them you'd surf the web for fun and watch flash anime and videos and IM all your buds or spend 90 percent of the time in chat like most teen and pre-teen girls do.

They actually think they got you a cell phone so you could call them, not so you could call all your friends and text message them.
