I suspect you'll find the answer is luck. As the drives age and sectors go bad the drive controller maps the bad sectors as 'bad' and moves the data from them to somewhere else. It used to be a section on the actual drive that contained the bad sector data but I think that it was moved to flash memory on the drive controller to squeeze little extra bits of performance out of the drive. You probably swapped two controllers that didn't have any bad sectors.
I lost interest in the nitty gritty of how drives work some time ago so I could be wrong.
I've been doing consulting and software development for around 30 years, and when I was young and dumb, thought I could fix anything. Now I know better and have found that in this situation, the phrase "Wow, that's too bad. Where are your backups?" works nicely.
A data recovery job early in my career were Telescope images for the CSIRO that I was told would not be available for imaging for another 25 year. They really appreciated the effort and a lot of unrelated systems work came out of me making the effort for them.
I acknowledge that that is a perfectly reasonable position to take for say a database or spreadsheet information, when it comes to word processing documents and pictures it's pretty obvious when artifacts are introduced. However the wisdom of your position is undeniable and I will certainly be incorporating it into whether I undertake a data recovery job considering the potential for liability.

Good filesystem to recover from, I have successfully recovered data from a drive formatted over ReiserFS. For all his quirks, it's a great filesystem. What did they format over it, NTFS I'm guessing?
I had more than 500GB on it so I've been looking for something to unformat it and recover the data.
1. get a bigger drive say 1TB.
2. dd the raw image of the target drive onto the new drive *do not attempt data recovery off the original disk*, all data recovery is conducted from the dd image.
3. Do you have the original partition information, this can be handy as if you can get these original figure you can use some of the Reiser tools to restore the journal and recover the data, if you are lucky you will then be able to use fsck which will start to restore the files to Lost+Found as unconnected inodes. You may even be able to mount the image as a loopfs and copy the files off directly.
4. if you can't use 3, you will need to use a tool (magic rescue comes to mind) to recover files from the drive image based on file types in sweeps.
I have successfully recovered data from trashed drives this way. Fortunately for you you picked reiserFS which is more forgiving that other filesystems. You have lost data, but I rate you chances as pretty high even if some dolt has formatted right over your file systems. It takes a lot of time to do the recoveries so I usually set them up to run in batches over night.

After the chiro started loosening me up my shoulders started to relax and I also felt more relaxed and more confident and relaxed. Also massage in a big way, it does hurt but it also loosens you up. I mean proper physio therapy massage, not lightweight massage, deep muscle massage.

That aside, my old truck run dual fuel LPG and Petrol and I notice with some petrol fills it pings, which confuses me because I'm sure that ethanol has a higher octane rating so you *should* be able to extract more power out of it by advancing the ignition (the LPG is a similar octane).
Modern injection systems on engines should be able to handle ethanol because they are equipped with knock sensors, so the computer advances the ignition till it hears knock, then backs it off. But since many manufactures run engines fuel air ratios at 10:1 for top end lubrication to avoid warranty claims on engine issues it would explain why ethanol is releasing more smog - it's not burnt properly.
The stoichiometric ratio for petrol is around 14:1, and farming issues aside, are we really just looking at the vehicle industry refusing to adapt with tuning and engine components made to suit ethanol?
There are tooling and material costs for car manufacturers and I doubt that the warranty claims have amount to anywhere near what these new costs are.

Agree, wtf making ethanol from corn anyway? Surely sugar cane would be better for that. In Australia our sugar industry is sitting idle, we have massive plantations and farms with light rail infrastructure to production facilities basically falling into decay. I feel it would make sense to use it.
However I think that long term sea based production would be the way to go, preferably a pump-able algae, that would yield some sort of bio-diesel type fuel. Certainly there will be logistical issues, but having food vs fuel using up land is just dumb. Who know maybe we could re-task some of those large oil platforms.
And it's fun too. That aside, my old truck run dual fuel LPG and Petrol and I notice with some petrol fills it pings, which confuses me because I'm sure that ethanol has a higher octane rating so you *should* be able to extract more power out of it by advancing the ignition (the LPG is a similar octane).
Modern injection systems on engines should be able to handle ethanol because they are equipped with knock sensors, so the computer advances the ignition till it hears knock, then backs it off. But since many manufactures run engines fuel air ratios at 10:1 for top end lubrication to avoid warranty claims on engine issues it would explain why ethanol is releasing more smog - it's not burnt properly. The stoichiometric ratio for petrol is around 14:1, and farming issues aside, are we really just looking at the vehicle industry refusing to adapt with tuning and engine components made to suit ethanol?
There are tooling and material costs for car manufacturers and I doubt that the warranty claims have amount to anywhere near what these new costs are.

Nah, there is no benefit to wiping them out and no one *really* cares about the people of North Korea. They go "what a sad sad situation - but what can we do", and they are right because KJI refuses even South Korea's help and advances of peace under the "Sunshine" policy. If there is the remotest chance of a Nuclear Launch from NK, concern for their people won't even register.
Probably, but even as the Russian and Chinese governments loose patience with KJI all we can really expect from the successor is using that bargaining chip to increase the benefit of their position in terms of aid, fuel oil and possibly LWR. That's the real power they have - the threat of using nuclear weapons.

It's not good, but all this means is North Korea can't be invaded, and who would want to? Altruism is not a good enough reason to sacrifice troops in a country that would be prepared to use Nukes against an invader. The leadership is weak and in a time of turmoil. I'm fairly certain that Kim Yong-il suffered a stroke recently so he can't lead the country there forever so someone has to replace him. They will inherit a country with weapons, but no bread. How sad for the North Korean people.
So while the leadership of North Korea is at it's weakest, it beats it's chest with it's weapons forcing improving their position of bargaining.
