I spend a lot of time in the ocean and this summer it has been following the trend started in 2010 of being really cold when outside temps are 42C.
I know people are about to say that it's because I'm getting older and more sensitive however I spend an average 2 hours body surfing which means, apart from my head, I am fully immersed, treading water the whole time. I've surfed the same break for years usually about 3-5 metres deep and that has always been the same for the last 20 years. I've been in the water during winter too when it is so cold it feels like your skin is burning, so I can tolerate really cold water. My entire body tells me it is wrong for the ocean to feel the way it does now.
Second thing is bushfires. I few years ago we had bushfires go through *rainforest* and burn the roots of the trees down to about a metre below the soil line. These rainforests have been unburnt for thousands of years and are not adapted to fire as opposed to normal bush, which is adapted to fire. This has nothing to do with my personal experience because soil strata core extracts tell us that is how the rainforest has behaved for a lot longer than we have been around for.
Some people out there like to use their personal experiences as a way to falsify and invalidate the work being done to warn us that our civilization has to mend it's way.
My personal experiences tell me something quite different. They tell me the world is changing in a profound way, the work of the climate scientists explain the experiences I've had and news like this makes me wonder what is coming next.
The amount of hypocrisy on this issue considering how many set top boxes are out there that violate the GPL to provide DRM compliant streams is breathtaking.
I'd love to see a virus that enforces the license terms on a windows box so that pirated versions of the OS, or any other software, won't run.
There are a lot of people with mental health issues.
Are you talking mental health issues as in medically recognised ones?
Perhaps I should have phrased it "mental hygiene issues". I was posting tired and I get sloppy, sorry for not being more specific.
That's not mental health, it's just bad person, bad upbringing, and bad environment.
Well isn't being anti-social a mental health issue? You would reason that someone in that situation is going to have mental health issues, at the very least they are going to have toxic personalities, very little confidence, generally unpleasant and full of inappropriate behavior and remarks.
What better place to take their feelings of inferiority, be aggressive online where they have no fear of physical retribution and finally feel like they can dominate *someone*. Especially when their target is expressing vulnerability by asking questions.
Devising strategies of how to respond to trolls and stand up for yourself is a appropriate thing to do because trolls will be there and it's better to toughen up and take personal responsibility for defending your own psyche. Even worse is showing trolls empathy, which if they are really toxic will make them look foolish and if they are not it might be enough for them to end up feeling like the asshole that they are enough to stop.
The internet isn't a safe space and it's a good idea to keep that in mind when you are using it.
Let's just skip the inevitable bullshit and cut right to the chase here. There are a lot of people with mental health issues. Inherently, some of these have a lot of internal aggression from unresolved issues and they will take it out whenever and on whomever they can.
Let's also be realistic, there are a bunch of these people here at/. and we have had a surge of anonymous jerks flood in here to troll because they can, it's what they do. They do so because they are too cowardly to face their own issues and resolve them. Consequently they are so full of bile and vehemence that it overflows from them.
Asking for help is seen by these "people" as a sign of weakness, as opposed to the humility of learning that it is. You have to make yourself vulnerable to ask a question and that is what these pathetic trolls do.
You can do something about it by dealing with your own issues so that you are mentally stable enough to endure the trolls, then turn it around on them so that they never bother you again. You must confront bullies otherwise they will keep bothering you. Even though you are making yourself vulnerable to appeal for help you must be armed with the knowledge that these people will attack you if they see what they perceive as weakness and be ready to answer, in kind, if necessary.
My partner has misophonia. I deliberately provoke it so I can condition her out of it. As a bonus, it's hilarious. You will have an unavoidable picture of these sounds in you mind as my legg jumps up and down as I set up an repeating reflex in my leg, it can go on indefinately .
the spelling mistakes are deliberates as is the, punctuation errrors, that
Feeling triggered yet? I also do a slow openign of my mouth when it is dry and there is no food in there so that my toungue sticks and it makes a suktion noise. I leave the screen door open a random distance between one and 6.8 cetremitres so it is not either open or closed. I rustle peanut bagsa, cereal boxes, paper, loud crispy plastic for no reason at all.
One of my favourites is to take the crunchiest freshhest grape I can find , put it between my teeth, be completewly silent, then crunch it as loud as I possibly can, somtimes when I am on the phone to her. I am usually in fits of laughter, sometimes there are tears in my euyees s. I shop for these grapes deliberately, its worth the time.
I slurp my tea, and then I go 'AHHHHHHHH' right after. I make farting noises with my feet on the lounge and pretend that I really farted. I do this because I love her and want to help her bee more tolerant and be able to function. Its my duty, I think its werking!.
But I really pay attention to her table manners criticisms, I figure if I can eat without getting her riled up I can eat in the most polite company with confidence. fortunately for me she has a good sense of humour, or she is going to kill me in my sleep.
P.S. I also get a metal drink bottle, fill it a bit with water , then flick the bottle so it makes a tone, then I disrupt the tone, buy sloshing the water around so the pitch changes randomly,
You may want to investigate using a diary instead as it may have specific and additional protections under your local laws. A notebook may be claimed as a method to capture confidential information and therefore subject to a search, where as a diary (and its associated habit) can be admissible as evidence in some courts and is a private document, YMMV.
I think you are ahead of a lot of people who just stumble from day to day aimlessly. I too have a regular diary habit that extends back 20 or more years. It is an amazing tool for long term memory. In my specific case I have launched three legal action with the evidence from my diaries and won every time.
Sort of. It's a function of the bios to set the ram to a consistent state. Even a power cycle means that the bits stored in ram are in a random state on start, the bios makes sure that doesn't happen. A reboot means they would still be in the same state prior to the reboot *IF* the bios did not set the ram state prior to booting. That can really trip you up with some things if you are unaware of it.
Besides, aren't we off-topic? Aren't we supposed to be talking about Trump and blah blah.;)
It's the 21st Century, time to start having politicians subscribe to issues the populous moves as relevant instead of a hidden autocracy determining the direction of the establishment. Left and Right simply means 'other interests' where 20% dictate what happens to the other 80% of us. Where Left is supposedly attached to communists and Right supposedly attached to capitalists economic systems in a political environment designed hundreds of years ago twisted over time to ignore the constitutional foundations that keep society stable.
Perhaps it is time to upgrade our thinking about the two party system, and consider the left and right approach in the same way we look at if we prefer black and white movies over color movies.
The alt-whites are the opposite of the SJW. It's "the Right" coming to terms with their homosexuality and using it just as poorly as "the Left" has. From what I can gather SJW forget that their freedom of speech ends where my human rights begin, you can't make me use your gender pro-noun unless I like you.
What I see the alt-whites doing is attacking culture, which is just as bad, just different bad. I'm white, I like my culture, imperfectly it tries to include people and protect human rights. I don't mind people trying to change it however I don't think that destroying it is a good idea either.
It's been hot this summer, really hot so naturally, I'm catching some waves.
The water is cold, icy cold and I'm only half joking when I say, 'now we know where the icebergs are melting to'. I know it's subjective, I posted this in previous years, however I have decades of experience in the ocean and I remember by month just how cold the water should feel for that time of year. My mental map of the way the ocean should feel is changing enough to notice.
I can sustain a 2+ hour body surf if I have time. I had time the other day and could only stay in for an hour, it was that cold in the middle of summer on a 42C day.
This used to be a pretty rare occurrence, now it is becoming more common at least to my local observations.
Animals and insects eat psychedelic drugs in the wild - just to get wasted. Deers do it, so do some flies - and they repeat the experience, so it is not an accident.
It says a lot for how long the psychedelic experience has been around consciousness, that it is not unique to humans.
Thanks, you nailed it - that is in fact what is happening when I wait whatever minutes it takes for the as server to get its shit together when I could have finished reading the thread.
Why, because media companies are too stupid to come up with a better model so they bog down the net with streams of moronic shows.
Not so sure spewing all the video streams over the 'net is a bad thing. It creates demand for capacity, which is naturally increased. More capacity is pretty much always a good thing IMHO.
You're probably right and the additional capacity is a good thing, however that doesn't change that it is a stupid model. Advancement and adaptation is a good thing for business and these are businesses highly resistant to change. Their requirements for laws and constructs like the DMCA to sustain their business model instead of evolving to 21st century business conditions just shows that their business model is obsolete.
They are a 20th century construct trying to stay relevant.

While I am venting my spleen over stupid stuff, another thing pissing me off is slashdot starting to display ads over the posts even when signed in - please stop doing that shit slashdot.
An interesting article on the Gates/Buffet adventure. They are investing in a start-up that is trying to build transportable burner nuclear reactors, IFR lite IIRC

Clarification: You have to make yourself vulnerable to ask a question and that is what these pathetic trolls prey on.

I'm not sure about that - I'm well within punching distance there.
Don't slurp.
OK, if that's a sound that bothers you

If you want to know how socialism ends - read 1984, that *is* what it is about. Hungergames is where a nihilistic western society ends.
Seriously dude, you need to update your worldview - it's obsolete.
Wow, this is really great - thanks.
Why are these scientists torturing mice?
So we don't end up torturing humans.

The most on-topic post is by Mr AC and no one has even noticed.

Yeah, that's what you said last year.
Bottom line. It doesn't work any more.
