...Since VHS is usually only 640x460 (or 704x480 on my V7700 card), full DVD resolution is kinda silly. For longterm storage, record to DVD-R in Higher bitrate divx or other format, add the codec on the dvd, and be sure to always keep a machine around that can read the disks, and maybe transcribe them to the next format that comes along. Two hours of video at decent resolution is about 2 gigs, with divx5, and as storage capability goes up, those 300 didsk become, maybe, one.
Actually, there's this huge kegger going on in Valhalla; It started just after the Alamo, and some boys from Tennessee (and Texas) are showing them how we party. They should come up for air in a couple of centuries.
Asamov is one of those writers who seem to read best in date of publication, rather than series, pe se. I mean, if you read the major series, "Trilogy" and "Robots" as groups, you'll miss that whole interplay between the series; or will learn things too soon to be surprised by them.
I WAS going to post something along those lines; You got there first.
They havent had an original thought in a while; I bought the last couple of albums (before they came out against Napster) just on their name. They were a rehash, and BS.
Haven't bought any of their shit since then, and wont.
How about doing the experiment outside the space station, with two smaller masses orbiting each other. Have to get far enough away that the gravity generated by the space station wouldn't affect your setup, and other details, But; Somewhere, in orbit, we should be able to do this experiment.
Two masses, one lead and dense, one made of a less dense material easy to disperse rapidly.
After the two masses are orbiting each other, we detonate one, (make one out of TNT) , while recording positions of the other, (in 3d) and see what happens.
the amount of debris hitting the orbiting body can be determined and taken into account;
The resultant path should show whether it's instantaneous or not. (does it's path change before the debris reaches it?)
The only problem is that the camera that is looking at the light coming back from the desktop is likely Si, (due to cost) which in most configurations has a sensitivity peak about 700-800nm. Blue LED's have a shorter wavelength. about 470nm for the ones I have, and Si photosensors have a very low response to light of this wavelength. (about 10:1 lower) This is likely to cause problems in the long run.
But, Hey, if it works, it's definately cooler with blue than red.
Most americans that know about such things think it's intolerable corruption also. American politicians get rich by corporate backscratching; this has gone on as long as we've been a country, Tammany hall, with boss tweed as villan, is but one notorious example. (no, I'm not making that up.) Every so often, the people get tired of their shit, and a major housecleaning takes place. We are approaching one of those times, and the way these kind of stories suddenly expand is a symptom of how pissed off in general that the public is; it resonates and builds until something happens. My personal belief is that the HDTV bs that is being pushed is going to precipitate the big change. When the public can't record a popular show, because it's encrypted, shit will change.
The coolest part is that Virtual Dub doesn't use the macrovision copy protection information. I tried recording some VHS to CD and such stuff, and some of the tapes caused the program to refuse to copy, citing macrovision detected. Vdub didn't notice at all, and gave better quality to boot. Now I need a processor fast enough to encode to divx format in real time, and I'll be Happy. (my 1.2G athlon only does about 20fps, way too slow.)
I didn't realize William Shatner posted on slashdot!
Think of the cost of the inkjet cartriges to print 40GB of porn^H^H^H^H er...Files!
So, Upgrade and lose functionality, or not upgrade....
At least it's not a critical windows security problem.
After you get through with the Spammers, will you Please go after the MP/RIAA?

...going into radio Shack and typing
:
/r
10 Print "Shit!";
20 Goto 10
and walking away.
later, that evolved into:
10 Print "Fuck You!!";
20 y$=inkey$:if y$="" OR y$"" then 10
which basicly grabs the 'break' from the buffer before it can be processed, requiring a reboot to clear.
Adding the line (before executing)
basica fuck.bas
to the autoexec.bat ran the program from boot.
Truly evil, we were.
A PDA that senses hungry, angry, Gang Memebers?

...It's bad when the Headline News looks like a bad Scf-Fi novel, or possibly another 'Nostradamus' treatment.
I think everyone who read Ringworld must think so, at least, all the ones who watched Kung Fu, in my age group.

Doesn't the 1 micron thick ribbon sound similar to Sinclair Thread, from Ringworld?
If it falls over a city, could you pull one end and drop buildings?
Does it slice an off-course airliner in half as it flies thru?
Could I get large spider webs woven from it to drape across hallways to surprise unwitting burglars?
Something that strong could revolutionize several industries.
The machine I built last has PC4200 Dual Channel RAMBUS Memory.
With the built-in Promise IDE RAID, I get >40MB/S thruput.
That over 100 frames/sec encoding DiVX.
Sounds like your bud's problem isn't in hard drive speed/thruput.
does he wipe with the rabbit?

Great stories- Utopian togetherness- Yada yada....
I wonder what he thought it would get us...
Great sig!

Maybe with all the new Slashdot advert. income, /. could buy in for a 'hot grits' shot??
Now, really, WHO would make the best Dejah? the best Princess?
I just really want to see one of the four-armed green guys!!
