Do you lock your doors at night? Why? Don't you know it'll only cause the thieves to use crowbars and sledgehammers or even dynamite to get in? Is that what you want? Explosions in your neighboorhood because you couldn't learn how to talk to the bad men. And then you'll spend all your time and money investing in bigger and bigger locks while your children go hungry and the robbers invent bigger and bigger lock-picks... all because you locked your doors at night.
It will work. It can work. There is NOTHING the human mind can imagine that it cannot someday build.
Nice airport example. How bout the air traffic control system as another example. All them planes all over the nation, and the world, and all the gates and interconnects and ticket sales and yes, even the baggage systems... now that's complex. I doubt it'll work, better not try it.
Plenty of complexity out there, so much so that I have trouble believing any of it works, and yet it does. Hmmm...
Okay, let's just get straight to it. Someone please tell me why missle defense will not work. Please tell me why we are no longer a nation that can achieve any goal we put our minds too. Why are we not allowed to protect our kids from nuclear missles? And I'm not talking about missles from the piss-ants of the world, I'm talking about swatting down every fucking missle China and the former USSR can throw at us. Why don't we want that? Why doesn't anyone want to try? These people saying we can never achieve it, can never develop it, it'll never work... HOW DO YOU FUCKING KNOW THAT???
I believe the only limitations to human invention are time and the will to do it. Could DiVinci ever imagine a pocket calculator? Did Mozart ever imagine DTS surround sound? Were they impossible? No.
I remember a lot of "impossible" things coming into their own during the Reagan administration. That was a time when the people with the will found a way. If the tree huggers hadn't shut everything down during the 90's, we'd have transporters, time machines and a deathstar in orbit by now.
Instead, we tell ourselves we can't do it anymore. Good for us, way to lay down and die. I'm glad we've reached the limit of our capabilities. We'll gladly step aside for whatever nation arises in our absense. Then they'll be the ones on the moon.
I have a cup full of small squares, each one with a letter or digit on them. Pull one out, put it back in, shake, and repeat 7 or 8 times.
I have a bottle full of small pills, each one with a small letter on it. When ever I get that obsessive-compulsive I pull one out, swallow, and repeat 7 or 8 times.
I'm not interested in blocking her access, only an awareness of what she surfs so that if I find it to be a morally touchy issue, we can discuss it.
You are, without doubt, the biggest pussy ever. Gosh, don't "inhibit" your 11 yr old step daughter. Nice parenting skills. No wonder your wife only has every-other-weekend access to the kid. Here's a clue, it's your job to protect the kid from herself. Search her room, find out everything she does and if it's wrong, STOP HER. It's your job, fuckhead.
I usually go with the latest nightly build whenever slashdot or another website mentions it has reached a new milestone. The last time I downloaded it was about 3 weeks ago. I've also tried Netscape 6.0 as well as previous builds that are considered "stable", always with the same outcome. I spend 3 minutes setting preferences only to have the "okay" button not work and the quit button only works half the time and the pulldown fonts menus under preferences doesn't work the way Mac menus are supposed to work, etc etc. And after all the work on setup, trying to achieve a familiar browsing experience with book marks and font sizes and email, it crashes the OS. I used to cheer for Mozilla, all I ever wanted was a slightly faster netscape with a few bug fixes. After atleast a year and a half of watching this thing develop, I give up.
If you can recommend a version to try, I'll take a look. And yes, I have made bug reports.
I'm sure the Airbus crash at the Habsheim Air Meeting in Germany in June 1988 and the subsequent Airbus safety problems following that crash had nothing to do with the decision by the Saudi Arabian national airline to go with Boeing.
It could only have been the work of a super secret organization with the ability to read and listen to the communications of the entire world silmutaneously. An organization run by...THE AMERICANS! Ahhhhhhhhhh.
Haven't airbus jets been falling out of the sky pretty regularly lately?
p.s. I'm pretty sure an agency powerful enough to steal airline contracts would have no problem with PGP encryption.
I guarnette any admin that is worth his weight can keep 16 X86/Sparc/Alpha boxen running as stable as 16 Mac boxen
I work for an all Mac company with over 16 Macs and we don't have any admins. Everything from imacs to ibooks to G3's and G4's and even a few 8500's and not one tech guy, Hmmm...
Is it "Trekkie" or "Trekker" ? I can never remember...

As a long time Mac user who is just starting to play with OSX, I can tell you that this is going to be an absolute security blood-bath. We don't know jack about user security and we don't know anything about how this new OS works.
To make matters worse, we're out there downloading everything we can get our hands on. We want to use this new OS, so every new app is a brand new toy to play with. If the read-me file says to log in as root before installing, we'll do it. If the read-me file says to trash this or that, we'll do it because we don't know any better. We're at the mercy of anybody with a webpage containing a download section.
For all I know, I've already installed a backdoor on my system. How can I tell? The learning curve will be steep on this OS. Mac users are not stupid and they will learn, but we're going to get smacked hard a few times before we figure out what we're doing.
After several intense multi-million dollar months of market research they chose the name "iPaq". The revolutionary use of the letter "i" before the word "Paq" (spelled with a delicious Q instead of CK) gives this device the necessary punch to compete in today's wired world. Kudos!
discarded names were as follows:
iPalm Pilet
iDe-Vice

And I'm sure you won't forget to mention the fact that every major network called the election for Gore before the polls had closed in the heavily republican panhandle causing a verifiably lower voter turnout. Do those potential votes also count or is it only the missing Gore votes you want to include?
The previous "off topic" post is actually a negative comment on the project as a whole. I believe the person behind this 3D UI is out of his league as demonstrated by the amatuerish website on which it is being promoted.
I apologize to the moderator for sending one over your head.

Being secure doesn't bring harm, it prevents it.

Hey, way to moderate your political beliefs. This is no more flamebait than the article it addresses.
Oh, did the swearing bother you? Sorry, Shit-for-brains, I feel terrible. Grow up.

I see no mention of enriched integration or of robust environments. This is not for me.
good thought
2First Dell slams apple as the next SGI, and now Linus piles on. What's everyone so nervous about?
OS 9 just crashed download a song off Napster again.
I blame operator error.

Here's a couple of recurring themes:
1) Alien ship fires toothpick, shields immediatly down to 20%. Time to run for it.
2) A modified deflector dish is every problem's solution.
This story is a troll. And trolls evolved from ents.

There's one for sale on eBay with 80 games. Current bid is $172 US, you have 20 minutes. Good luck.
You definetly SHOULD buy the Sparc or the Alpha, that way you can join future Apple threads and totally rule.
You head over to Sam's club and look at the prices, I'll be at the Apple store drooling.

What's that they're saying?
Doom and gloom on the horizon?
Redhat can't possibly succeed?
They MIGHT be going out of business...someday?
Congratulations, Linux, Mac users have been dealing with this crap for decades. Welcome to our world.
Good point. Steve, are you reading this?
