This has as much to do with the media as it does 9/11, Dubya or the whole war on drugs, terorism and our current military budget.
The American people bought this war and now they're going to pay for it. How many decades do you think it might take our economy to recover, if it ever does?
Which shows how political correctness could be censorship by any other name.
One day, long after cigarettes have been made illegal, we might see pictures of people like hilter smoking cigs in our history books. This is how we choose to teach eachother about reality and history.
Its called media. And in my opinion its all propoganda, even the stuff I agree with.
Yes, but under KDE it is completely customizable. You can create a list of applications to use for each type of file and launch them from the right-click menu. There are also konqueror plugins for many file types so you might not even need to launch an application if that's your preference.
Hehe... well, what I do is write a script in shell or perl, make it executable and put it in/usr/bin, for example. Then use the rick-click "open with" -> "other..." and tell it to launch my script for that type of file. Then you can use the "Edit file types..." to move your script up to the top of the list or make it automaticly use your script instead of launch an application or perform a default action. Or at least you'll have access to it in the "open with" submenu.
In a closed society where everybody's guilty, the only crime is getting caught. In a world of thieves, the only final sin is stupidity. - Hunter S. Thompson
But do you honestly want to live in that world. We have a choice, y'know.
Laser rifles are only the beginning. Be affraid when our government decides to automate the military. Can you imagine a world class superpower that doesn't listen to the UN and has an automated military under the control of President Bush and VP Chenney? I can.
We're on the verge of an explosion in robotics. I'm not talking robots the size of people. I'm talking mean little fuckers the size of a rodent packing the same firepower and efficiency of our soldiers without the emotional complications. They would seek and destroy anything we told them to and be designed for killing people.
You heard me. These robots will be designed to kill people. Possibly discriminantly. But probably not.
Well, with KDE right now I can right click on any file and tell it to open with any application on the system.
I guess you can do this with Win2k, too, but I prefer KDE.
For example I wrote a script to automaticly loopback mount my cdrom isos into a.loop.pid directory and open a konqueror window. As soon as I exit the window the loopback filesystem is unmounted. Then I right click and I have an option to burn the iso onto a CD. That was another script I wrote that automaticly burns an entire directory of ogg or mp3 files onto an audio CD as well.
I think it might be more useful to have these type of scripts integrated into the system instead of writing more ways to automate the openning of an application or file.
It might be nice to have that metadata but things like locate should be run at a nice level 19 and those types of extensions to a filesystems are not required to have a usable workstation. They might make it nicer for some people but for people like me they might also just get in the way.
I've used OS9 and its not entirely bad, but I'd never want that running on my workstation.
Yeah, but I bet if I played with that Lindows installation I could have got it to work. Linux and I'm sure Lindows are filled with bugs. It is inevitable that these bugs will one day be worked out. And by then Microsoft had better be working a new business model or they might find their revenue streams drying up. Though I seriously doubt Lindows is much if any competition to Microsoft, I bet Sun, HP, SGI and IBM will give old M$ a run for their money.
And since in your mind they are a threat to public safety they are separate from the public? If protester == terrorist could be true then we could one day treat protesters like terrorists. I fear the day when the public doesn't care about the safety of the protesters. Because the protesters are the public.
They are expressing opposition in a vocal yet non violent manner. How would you rather they expressed their opinion? On TV?
bunch of dipshit hippies
Did you know the message of their movement was peace, love, solidarity and tolerance. But what can they know?
I don't have anything against drug dealers. But I would expect a bank to follow legal precedures before confiscating my property such as obtaining a warrant to search for specific items or information. And if I am not involved in anything illegal there should be absolutely no way for the bank to freeze my account whatsoever! In fact they should be insured and forced to pay whatever they owe me when I ask for it.
Its one hell of a backwards system you folks keep building here.
This is just like my last comment on the media industry. I hate it when subscribers and customers are treated like some resource that companies get to exploit for profit whenever they see fit. It is unethical. Its not fair..
Oh well... best to just ignore it until it goes away.
The problem isn't that they are trying to sell the service of entertainment. The problem is that they are trying to sell their customer's time to manipulative corporations and their commercials.
If I have to pay to watch TV I should get quality content. Either that or TV should be free. If I have to pay to get a DVD, then I should be able to watch that DVD anytime I see fit. I should not be forced to watch commercials or pay anything extra. TV should be like a Tivo-like service where I agree to watch whatever you want me to watch when you want me to watch it.
Many people agree to that old business model but not me. I won't allow someone to use me as a "subscriber" that they can turn around and sell to corporations that only care about my money. And I won't fund any organization that stabs me in the back and enacts legislation to limit my freedom and the capabilities of the technology I might purchase in the next few years because they feel like playing some childish game of monopoly.
I made an mp3 collection of all my CDs in less than a year. In a few years I will no longer need DVDs as I move my favorite content into the ether. The media companies have lost my trust forever. They never were on my side. They only cared about money.
Anyone know where some good free entertainment is? Anyone want to make some?
You're wrong. A week is a very long time to wait. It is so long, in fact, it almost makes me want to sign up for a RedHat Network subscription. But you're right about the ethics thing. I don't steal and I don't pay for crap so I'll wait my week to download 9.x. Here's hoping they fixed all the bugs.
Good. Please shop at my store, where I will sell you a "computer" which, when you bring it home, is nothing more than a case with no parts inside. I could use the 1,000% profit, and since you don't care for any consumer rights, I've got nothing to worry about.
You live in a fantasy world. Try that in the real world sometime and see how long you stay in business. My guess is you would be slapped with a lawsuit before the end of your openning day.
Did I say I don't care for consumer rights? No, I said consumers are always at fault. They have plenty of rights and laws and information to back them up. If they don't do the research and instead simply trust the gas station to give them quality American gas derived from rich Texas oil and refined at the most luxurious American refineries then the consumer is just being stupid, as usual. That gas probably came from Iraq and contributed to funding those 9/11 terrorists and was cheaply refined so they could sell it to you at twice the price because they know how much you trust them.
I don't know about the other 90% but I always offer assistance whenever it is asked of me.
I also know how to solve most of my problems by myself without needing to ask anyone for help. And I highly recommend that others learn how to do this as well. That's what the internet is here for. A search engine is a tool that can be used to find information about anything you need to learn about. When talking about computers you should be able to find all the info you would ever need.
Should you take it up the ass because you were ignorant that the gas company sold you crap gas that destroyed your engine? Or is it their fault for not selling you what they said they'd sell you (gasoline safe for you to fill your car with)?
You should take it up the ass for being an ignorant consumer. You had every chance to buy that electric vehicle or research each gas company you are so ready to trust. If you don't make the right decisions who can you blame but yourself?
Its not like you're forced into buying gas, or even driving, for that matter.
Oh, and if they sell you something other than what they have clearly stated it is known as fraud and can be illegal in some places.
I shop at Fry's. I have purchased stuff online before and been ripped off, but usually when I'm purchasing a chip I want to be able to return it if it doesn't work. I have never been given the wrong chip on accident from Fry's.
If you purchased it online perhaps you may want to rethink your post. An ignorant consumer is no one's fault.
But isn't this already illegal? If I sell you a car that has a V6 in it and I tell you it has a V8 don't you have every right to sue me for being fraudulent? Then why does Intel need to police this. Why not legally attack the resellers?
Because Intel wants more control. Of what I have no idea.
Someone already mentioned this, but I thought it might need to be repeated. RedHat 8.0 includes gcc 3.2, see:
$ gcc --version gcc (GCC) 3.2 20020903 (Red Hat Linux 8.0 3.2-7) Copyright (C) 2002 Free Software Foundation, Inc. This is free software; see the source for copying conditions. There is NO warranty; not even for MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE.
I'm curious. If we insist on breaking binary compatibility to include a better threading implementation why not just dump in the latest development kernel? Its not like 9.0 will be any more stable than 8.x.
Not very many? All the widespread virus attacks I witnessed in the last few years have been on Microsoft software.
I guess they need to get a virus more often than once a week to be a real security threat, huh?
This has as much to do with the media as it does 9/11, Dubya or the whole war on drugs, terorism and our current military budget.

Was it worth it?
Scott McNealy still thinks network computers are going to take over. Sunray anyone? I didn't think so.

Almost noone only quotes the facts these days.

Kinda sounds like how Internet Explorer was fully integrated into the OS and couldn't be removed, doesn't it?
:)
Microsoft lies to you and you fall for it every time. Hahahhahahahahahahahaha.. hahaha.

I wonder who is so fragile that an insult about their intelligence makes them stop trying.
Or cat /proc/cpuinfo on Linux. But if you're running Linux you probably don't have these problems.
Please explain..
Who did this to you and what happened?
