There could very well be a family wishing to share a large collection of digital family videos that they have taken at holidays and birthdays, for instance. They want them to remain fairly private while sharing the content that they own.

such family should use something which is NOT BT. WASTE is one altrenative. among others are DC++, Rodi etc.

UDP based protocols solve the problem at least partially. If packet loss is a rare condition application can use HD as a buffer. look "lambda networks" in Google or wikipedia. look also "Rodi P2P" - pure UDP P2P client (not the only one). Gnutella is the other example of UDP based data transfer.

The most popular approaches to the problem of the fat pipes is multiple TCP sessions and streaming over UDP. In case of streaming over UDP retransmission requests can arrive after the transaction of some large block completed. In many UDP based protocols destination sends only NACks. etc.

The area is very interesting and i expect will gain more attention in the future. it looks unlikely that network delay will be (can be ?) cured, but pipes are definitely getting fatter.

check project Rodi P2P. this is not a "recommender" system, but thanks to certificates and (optionally) signed packets you can create invitation only P2P hub. you can use certificate chains to ensure that only invited by trusted peers clients get access to the content you deliver.

you can also check Rodi - it can work as a members only hub and as a public network in the same time. for example Rodi client can search/download content from the public domain while providing only limited access to the locally published content.

a question - how can i open that "watch" links on CNN.com ? they look like JavaScript links. how can i fetch URL and download the content ? i will greatly appreciate any link to useful tutorial. i filled the support form on CNN.com website where i ask to change format from streaming to downloading of nonDRMed files and suggest OGG Vorbis or AVI, but my uneducated guess is that they are going to ignore it. hack remains the only option. i think i am able to compile VLC on my machine.
