Star Wreck Released as Download

Arto Rantala writes "After seven years of production, Star Wreck: In The Pirkinning, the Finnish Star Trek / Babylon 5 parody movie, was finally released on DVD a month ago and is now available for download. In spite of its practically zero budget, the film has a hilariously captivating story, top notch CGI and even a couple of performances from professional actors. Download it now and buy the DVD if you like it! I know I did. You can also obtain it directly from the .torrent"

In a bit later line, the Super-Soaker is, however, preserved in the translation. Well, maybe the joke isn't too big in this example, but losing such references makes dialogues a bit less colourful.

On the other hand, it sometimes uses even more colourful English expressions than the Finnish equivalent.

MOST of the non-verbal cultural references are not understandable to foreign viewers, such as the Hesburger (a Finnish fast food chain), the Mannerheim battleship (named after a dead president and WWII-marshall-hero), etc, etc. The Garybrandy is in Finnish Karigrandy, after a "Kari Grandy" adventurer hero figure in old commercials for Grandy lemonade. The engineer speaks with strong Turku (the city where I live) dialect, in constrast with the Scottish engineer in Star Trek (he's actually an old sci-fi fan/UNIX administrator who's well known for writing his name with "T" middle initial as in James T. Kirk). The guys in the hot dog line are wearing white hats that are promotion hats from Finnish high-school, usually worn on May Day student celebrations. The hats have tufts that indicate they are polytechnics students, and their colourful zip-suits are party suits used by university students. The "TIEDÄ" magazine the three are reading on Earth is taken from Tiede ("Science") magazine.

Overall rating a 6 (8 if you are familiar with Startrek AND Babylon 5).

Technically the movie was very good. The sound quality was good and the special effects were solid. There were a few spots I think could use polish- for example with the ship takes off the first time it goes straight up- I think a little tilt would have been used in the real series. But the quality was pro level in my opinion- "B" movie, not "A" movie- but pro.

Costumes. The costumes were pretty solid but one of the lower parts of the movie. This makes sense and you have to spend -real- money to buy fabric. This is probably one of the limiting factors of non-big budget productions going forward. You can simulate the sets, you can get actors cheap, but you have to spend real money on things like costumes, chairs, etc.

Production Quality. It was decent but suffered from having a small cast. You would see scores of starships but then only 20-30 people. I think some crowd scenes could be digitally multiplied to make them more effect.

Tone. This is where the movie is uneven. It can't decide if it wants to be serious with humor or outright parody. Some parts are excellent, tense, serious and then it will veer sharply into stupid things that would not happen in real life. On the other hand- a lot of other scenes were much more like what WOULD happen in real life than you typically see in movies. The tone may be required to avoid lawsuits since parody is protected.

Acting. To be honest- there is a lot higher quality acting than you might expect. Some of it is that the actors already know the character they are playing so they don't have to make it up. I think some actors play multiple roles. There are at least a dozen major characters in the movie and ALL are distinct and stand out (which is quite a feat in a 2 hour film). None of it felt "wooden". A fair amount of it was a bit overblown.

Makeup. The costuming for Dwarf was a bit weak- and the costuming for a non alien was cheesy (a choice they made for a nose joke I think). Info was well done. General costumes are solid. The females looked pretty hot in some cases (but tall thin in a short black leather skirt is going to work in most cases).

Action Scenes. These were very weak. Probably the weakest part of the film. I guess hollywood stuntpersons deserve a lot more credit than they get. I can understand- actors just can't hit and be hit without hurting themselves or getting hurt. Stuntpeople mitigate injury through training and they still get hurt.

In Jokes. This is where SW rules. They really have a lot of fun poking jokes at the characters- even to the point of using them to advance the plot. Some are dead on, some are stupid, some misfire. But a lot more hits than misses.

Plot. The plot is very well thought out- much better than many "A" hollywood movies. It has plenty of twists and turns. You don't know what to expect at any given time. I won't give much away but it is NOT just about a bunch of CGI ships flying around fighting- they ADVANCE the plot with those battles, but the plot is about characters and character conflict.

Ending. The ending was solid- and well I won't say more but apparently there are some mistaken data assumptions.

There are MANY hollywood films out that I would not watch for free. This movie, I would have happily paid 6 bucks to see (maybe 7).

      * Manage your download and corresponding upload activity so as not to render your web browser useless. In other words there are caps placed on how much of your bandwidth gets used.

      * Do all this without human intervention or giant server farm managing it.

The special effects are sorta okay. Oh the space scenes are okay but the problem is with the take off scene. We have had similar scenes in all the real Star Trek movies with one tiny little difference. Humans. For a long time now shots of spaceships taking off have included human beings. The famous shot off the Millenium Falcon taking off with stormtroopers in the foreground now close to two decades ago makes the star wreck scene look, well look like a nicely rendered 3d studio scene. It is a nice 3d model but it is also extremely clear that it is no more. Remember that Final Fantasy that was so beautifull but lacked live? This is worse.

Decor, there was or maybe still is a fad for showing news programs in a virtual studio so they can all kinds of fancy decors without actually having to build them. Star Wreck is filled with them, especially the star trek bridges. THEY LOOK HUGE. Gigantic. Also grainy and empty. All the elements are there but for some reason it just doesn't seem to connect. It doesn't LOOK trek in the way even a cheap skit from the BBC or Saturday Night Life does.

The battles. Mmmm, I think someone wanted to show off how many star ships could be rendered at the same time. Showy, flashy but well lacking. None of the explosions are followed up by interior shots showing the effects. The Babylon fighters don't dogfight. In short it lacks the spark that we have seen in tv episodes with the real thing.

The plot. Perhaps there is something I missed but I just couldn't get involved. This is personal, especially since humor is involved and what one person finds hilarious others find not. Good parody for me comes very close to the original. Simply put, this is not how the star trek crew would behave not even if you take them to extremes of their character. Exactly WHY does picard choose to rule the world? I must have missed that.

The cutting. Cutting makes or breaks a movie. A scene can be made or broken by lasting just a few seconds to long. There are to many pauses, to many wasted moments. CUT CUT CUT. Most home movies suffer from this. Learn from the pros. Cut fast and cut often, it stops the viewer from getting bored. It also stops them from noticing pixalation in your background or badly stitched uniforms.

The acting. Well as said the finnish didn't exactly help me to "read" the emotions. It all sounded like they were permantly angry and drunk. Granted knowing fins this might be actually true.

The cutting also made some scenes drag out to long where you had several seconds of the cast just standing around after everything had been said wasting any quality acting.

Truly this movie is a huge achievement but at the same time I think it also shows a direction Home movies SHOULD not go. Learn to walk before you learn to run. First learn to direct and cut basic acting on regular set before you try to add hollywood type effects.

Simply put this seems awfully similar to those parodie porn movies, just with slightly better cgi. For a 7 years production I expected better acting. After watching this I am finally ready to face the last chapter of Star Wars. At least George Lucas knows how to really direct quality actors. (Well he does compared to the fins).

The subtitles of the previous installments don't seem to be there for allowing English-speakers to comprehend what's going on as much as compounding the funniness inherent in Star Trek in Finnish. They certainly don't work half as well on their own. Not only are a lot of nuances lost when converting Finno-Ugric speech into terse Latin-influenced Germanic writing, but someone relying on subtitles won't even notice the overtranslations - replacements for words that usually are just lifted from English - and has to skip a crucial part of the constant wordplay. That never happens on discussions about fan films.

Hollywood never produces anything like this, because a term Hollywood movie means at least some $$$ put into it by default. Even the worst of the worst have some budget. The reviews which compare SW to Hollywood stuff are a massive victory to the makers of this movie.

My answer: This is so true. The final testament to the perceived quality of the film is that it has already been available for a while as a Russian pirate version. Reference: http://www.film-dvd.ru/index.php?a=2&id=3024

The Russian cover says the name of the movie is: "Zvezdnaya avarija na parkovke" and continues to define it as "Parodiya na seryaly Star Trek I Vavilon 5." Also of note is "Rezhisser: Timo Vuorensola." The English name is, of course, wrong: "Star Wreck: The Pirkinning." However, there are both English and Russian dubbed soundtracks in 5.1, so it appears to be a more or less professionally made disc.

Could there still be any compliment higher than this (although we can be absolutely sure that this DVD is totally illegal)?
