the stability went out of the window when the improved the multimedia performance by decoupling the video sub system from the HAL (shudder). Direct X on NT? Stupid fscking idea.
No even that isn't closed source. Zend is an engine for optimising, free to use for PHP - but if you want to integrate the engine (not PHP) into your product, then you pay a fee
they're still bad, not as bad as the US but bad. The fact that we drive smaller cars, with more economic engines & generally have better Mass Transit systems helps a lot
no individuals but i think the apache group as a whole have done a great deal for opensource. not just the core group but also the modphp, modssl & modperl guys too. Apache is probably the second most visible thing after GNU/Linux and I use their software everyday. Way to go guys
Cant think of anyone who deserves it more (except maybe the *bsd guys)
Attempt to hack a persons account. Try passwords of 'secret', 'password', their birthdate, spouses birthdate, anything on a postit note on their screen. If that fails, phone up said user and say "Hi i'm FooBarSmith from MIS, I need you're username for delousing the terminal BMR-fubar queue." If they still don't give you their password, cough, tell them it's it is fixed and phone up another person in marketing. bah NSA backdoors;)
They developed two systems AFAIK, one called Dural & one called Katana. The US based one used 3dfx, the Japanese one used PowerVR. The Japanese based on won out (cant rememember which was which)
Website came out AFAIK before there was any good webserver software for the Win32 platform (IIS 2.0? Fastrack?). Closed source is the norm on that platform, especially way back then and it was distributed for free / with an O'Reilly book. I remember hacking WinCGI's together way back then before I started using *nix, and before anything like ASP was available. I guess the webserver was so popular and had displayed such a market that they thought it was a no brainer to add some functionality, tag Pro onto the end and make some cash.
Anyway, most of O'Reilly's books aren't open sourced, why should their software be any different?
can we not set up some generic username / password combo for these password protected sites and post it with the story, i must have registered with the nytimes like 3 times for some lame story...
I disagree, Windoze gamers are gonna look at all the linux heads jumping up and down shouting "kewl we got (insert obsolete bad selling old game) for Linux now. Windoze is dead," smile and install directx 8.
What the linux world doesnt need is ports of old average win32 games, what it needs to do is to petition companies like Looking Glass, Westwood et all to release the quality games simultaneously. ID Software are being great in this regard and thats what we need.
Unfortunately, I think many of these companies, and especially the publishers are even more frightened by the piracy problem on Linux than Windows...
Screw it, lets just opensource our own games, if we can make a better OS with opensource we can make better games too.

PHP was specifically designed as a WEB language, and even Allaire's own dev tools (Homesite) support it out of the box.

I bet it is something to do with those Infoseek banners that are in rotation at the moment...

especially the guy that did mod_rewrite & mod_ssl

don't know what you are doing, i triple boot mine with 95 (games), NT (office / exchange) & FreeBSD (work). My colleague runs Beos on his
isn't that scary?
Tertiary Adjunct of Gates of Bill...
This model also works (-sound -modem) with *BSD and Beos, although Beos is flaky with the docking station...
It was blackbelt not dural & katana was the japanese one...
I don't disagree with you, just pointing out the GPL is not perfect for everyone (i use *bsd a lot)

nothing else to say
Is this a sign that the beige box is finally on its way out? I really hope so.
> There really isn't much excuse even when Linux is open sourced.
Of course there is an perfectly valid reason not to use Linux. The GPL. A lot of companies *choke* on this.

no there is a luxury, i don't even have a fridge, then again in this climate you don't need one of those noisy, electricty guzzling monstrosities.
*bbrrrrrr*
