I think this is a perfect place to repost Dagmar's excellent HOWTO for spraypainting your computer. This was originally a series of answers to an Ask Slashdot question, but they've been collated onto a website.

Find it here: Dagmar's painting the computer -- a quick & dirty mini-HOWTO.

    As for topographical data,
US Geographic Survey for inside the US
Central Intelligence Agency (yeah yeah, but they have it) for outside the US

I think you can get that info in a digital format from either agency under the Freedom of Information Act.

I wouldn't use a standard Linux kernel for a real-time application, that would be silly. The same goes for a Solaris kernel or an NT kernel. None of them are designed for real-time operation. If I was doing a simple real-time system, I would use a simple real-time kernel like QNX RTOS or Caldera's DR-DOS.

For a more complicated system, I would use a hybrid RT system like Real-Time Linux. Check it out, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Besides, I've found that many "trained" MS people have enough self-acquired Linux experience (like, they use it at home) to competently administer a Linux system at work. A smart IT or MIS manager would *ask* his/her people if any of them have Linux or FreeBSD experience before deciding NT has any labor-availability advantages over these new-breed Unices.

Sometime there's more Linux experience floating around than management thinks...

Hopefully, this is one of the things that the various Linux certification programs will help fix. It will put a line on resumes, so managers and human resources departments can start taking note of it. Also, the industry seems to prefer people who have paid for expensive certification tests.

Layers: Gimp has layers. Gimp has had layers for a long, long time now. Have you even used Gimp?!?

Separations: This important feature is missing from Gimp 1.0. I understand that it is on the todo list for 1.1. In the mean time, it is fairly easy to use Gimp's color features to produce separations manually.

Good Color: Gimp has excellent color. The only thing it is lacking in this regard is a Pantone(TM) Licensed color tool. This is because Pantone will not license their name to such a tool without money. Gimp has Pantone-equivilant color control, just without the name. If you really need the name, just pay WilberWorks to come up with a Pantone(TM) system for Gimp, I'm sure they would be glad to. There is no way to get the name in any platform without shelling out money.

The interesting thing in my mind is that on the screen it says: "You have mail" and the annoying voice says: "You've got mail"

Not only are people more forgiving of bad grammar in verbal communication than in written, but in many cases the good grammer "sounds" wrong when spoken. I'm sure the discrepancy between the screen message and the soundbite is the result of focus groups saying "Yeah, I like that better", and walking away with their free lunch in their belly and ten bucks in their wallet.

Linux code might be free, but you can bet in years to come that KDE and GNOME will cost you.

How? KDE is currently GPL/LGPL, possibly to switch to Artistic. Neither license allows for anyone but the copyright holder to switch copyrights. As long as it is under either license, someone will be distributing it free of charge over the net.

GNOME is currently GPL/LGPL, with most of the core components copyright assigned to the Free Software Foundation. If the Free Software Foundation changes the license, we've got a lot more to worry about than whether or not someone is charging for the package. Again, as long as GNOME is GPL, someone will be distributing it free of charge over the net.

And of course, all the programs that you will have to run on it.

There will be some commercial/proprietary apps for both systems. However, both systems have the most important apps (including word processor and spreadsheet), under the GPL. Again, while the program is GPLed, someone will distribute it free over the internet.

Either you are communist or you are not, you cant play both sides.

What does communism have to do with any of this?? There hasn't been a real communist in over 100 years. While both Karl Marx and Richard Stallman are fuzzy people, I don't think the GPL was addressed in Das Kapital.
