  1. Skintones. on Software That Can Censor 'Sexual Images.' Or Not. · · Score: 2
Hmmm, now, when it's filtering and looking for those skintones, is it just looking for skintones of 'white' people? if so, what about the skintones of other races?

On the other hand, if they do include skintones from all races, then that's a lot of colours they're filtering.

  2. What's the fuss? on European ccTLDs To ICANN: "We Won't Pay!" · · Score: 3
I don't see why we should worry. From reading the article, it doesn't seem like they're not paying because they don't like ICANN, but because, they're not sure exactly what it is they get for paying ICANN. Even ICANN agrees, there should be something formal.

A top official at Icann ... agreed that a more formal arrangement was needed.
  3. Gaming and the Internet... on Taking Games Seriously · · Score: 1
I consider myself an avid gamer, I've spent lots, er, sorry, that should be lots of money of games, mostly role-playing (those books get expensive). Seeing as what I enjoy the most is role-playing games, I'll concentrate on them.

Now, the internet has done a few things to change the standard, role-playing game. I can now meet new gamers on the net, as Katz said, there's lots (I think he said something around 10 million or so) of people out there. Not only meeting them online, but it's also possible to play a RPG (Role-Playing Game) online (through IRC or ICQ, or other messaging systems... even email, it's just that email games take a while to play ^_^). The format of this is different than table-top gaming, and seems to lend itself more to character interaction than combat.

Another way of using the net, (which I've started to do) is to play table-top, or online, and to post information about the campain online. This is great for maps, or giving people the background that their characters should know (for fantasy worlds).

The net is involved in games now, I've seen reference to ICQ and IRC in the source books; and for one game, I've got a source book dedicated to the web.

Anyways, I'm not sure if a new culture is actually being formed (although I wouldn't doubt it), but the net is influincing normal table-top/board games, and the way we play them.

  5. Anime... soooo much of it. on Essential Anime · · Score: 1
Okay, I've been drawn into the vortex that is anime (just ask a few people who know me) and I've seen a couple of ones, and no one favorite yet.

Which Anime to watch depends a lot on what type of genre you want to watch. Anime isn't just a cartoon with a specific drawing style, but it's animation that is aimed at multiple different types of people. Sci-Fi and Fantasy seem to be the biggest types out there, but there are some modern day soap-opera ones too.

Now, here are some suggestions based on genre

    1. Fantasy (My favorite)
      • Ranma 1/2 (Ranma Nibun No Ichi) - Comedy - actually based in modern times... I didn't realize that until one of the characters pulled out a (sub?)machine gun in one of the episodes, and they make a reference to X-Files in another episode.
      • Slayers - Comedy - A superpowerful Sorceress who likes lots of food and lots of money, who ends up getting caught in supernatural plots. (Actually, I've only seen some of Slayers, but seen all of Slayers: Next (2nd season) and some of Slayers: Try (3rd season) and some of the movies)
      • Fushigi Yuugi - Epic Adventure - Two young girls get magically transported to ancient China. And they have to find the seven seishi (Guardians - actuall translation of seishi is constellation)
      • El Hazard - The Magnificent World Cool Anime where Makato and a few others from his high-school get drawn into El Hazard, and then they help (or hinder, depending on the character) El Hazard's survival.
    2. Sci-Fi
      • Neon Genisis Evangellion - Never seen it (well, one or two episodes), but it is generally considered the best Sci-Fi anime out there.
      • Bubble Gum Crisis - Again, never seen it (can you tell what type *I* like? ^_^), but it's one of the better Sci-Fi Anime.
    3. Soap-Opera-Like (Or I guess you could call this category 'Real Life')
      • Marmalade Boy - Tried watching it... it got my attention as long as normal soap operas do... which isn't very long.
      • Rurouni Kenshin - This isn't soap-opera, but real-life history. Takes place in the Meji era of Japan, and the main character is a former killer (best in all of Japan) who has forsworn killing. He now uses his Sabatu (Reverse sword - ie, the blade is on the wrong side of the sword) to help defend people. Awesome series.
    4. Just plain Weird Stuff
      • Sorcerer Hunters (& Spell Wars) - Fantasy - 5 Main characters, the two females turn into S&M Doms who 'pick' on the main character when he turns into his demon form (and sometimes when he's in his normal form.) Also of special note for this one is the names of the characters. Carrot, Marron Glace, Gateau Mocca, Chocolate, Tira Misu (That's the 5 main characters... other's have names of other foods, such as Bagel & Crossoint)

    Okay, I'm sure I missed some, but that just took too long to type out... especially since I'm at work. ^_^;

    Hope this helped. ^_^
  6. Re:Maybe I missed something... on Do-It-Yourself Sue Napster Software · · Score: 3
Nope, I just looked through their TERMS OF USE on their web page, as well as the EULA. No mention of bots anywhere.

There is however this nice little bit:
As a condition to your use of the Napster service and browser you agree that you will not: (i) use the Napster service to infringe the intellectual property rights of others in any way; (ii) use the Napster browser or service, or attempt to penetrate, modify or manipulate the Napster browser or service or any of the hardware or software thereof in order to: invade the privacy of, obtain the identity of, or obtain any personal information about (including but not limited to IP addresses of) any Napster account holder or user, or modify, erase or damage any information contained on the computer of any user connected to the Napster service; or (iii) reverse engineer any portion of the Napster service or browser.
I'd be interested to see what happens about part 3 where you're not allowed to reverse engineer their software. Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you have to do some reverse engineering to make a program that can also use their servers?

Well, if the programmers do actually form a company, then they could create their own daemon that would search the site. If they did this, and didn't use any of the previous code from Gnutella, then they could release it as a binary only.

This would stop some of the potential abuse of the search engine (your points 1 & 2).

As for your third point, you could always use email/icq/aim/irc/etc to send the person the url.

  8. Xbox vs PS2 vs .... on Microsoft Releases First X-Box Screens · · Score: 1
Okay, so it seems the next generation of console gaming is coming, if not already here. What will determine who comes out on top? a couple of things.

    1. system performance
    2. types of games
    3. cost (of system & games)
Now my vote is for PS2; it's already out (in Japan), they've already got games for it, and they've already got a customer/player/fan base.

I think that if MS is going to get anywhere in this market, they'd better come up with some really good games (this includes graphics & sounds & playability) AND have a low price for they're sistem.

Just for a point of note, those of us who do follow the Final Fantasy Series and what's going on with it, already know that Square owns upto ff15.com.

FFIX is going to be for PSX and FFX and FFXI will be for PS2, and, if I remember correctly, FFXI will be a cross-platform simultaneous release (ie, it will be released for PS2 and PC at the same time) All three of those games are currently being worked on/designed

There is also going to be a Final Fantasy move (which you can check out here )

    Ummm, hasn't anyone else noticed?

You called him a coward because he wouldn't 'stick up for himeself' in the face of the FBI. Now, the name FBI has a fair bit of weight behind it (wether it's from actually, the movies, or x-files...?) and I don't blame him for what he did. (I think what he did was a kind of instinctual response)

Now you're saying that he's no longer the coward because he's facing up to the FBI?
No, He's still the coward he was... he just has a few hundred bullies knocking at his email.

All your 'flaming' and 'telling him his rights' did was give him something else in this world to be afraid of...

Hope you enjoy this type of popularity.

  11. Two sides of the argument... on Who Owns College Students' Notes? · · Score: 1

Ok, there are two sides to this..

    First the professors:
While the actual information that they teach can't be copyrighted, trademarked, claimed as intelectual property, the way that it is presented can be. If somehow, when a student takes notes, they are able to keep the presented form, then the professors may have a case. However, most notes taken that I've seen, are either point form, or notes they've made from a text book. I don't seem too many people writing down what a prof says verbatum, and unless the prof wrote the text book...

    Now, on the Students side:
What they have in their notes (minus all the doodles and scribling) will be the highlights of the information that was given them.... organized how they feel like organizing it. Now all information is free, all that your doing when you buy a book, is paying for the binding, publishing and generosity of the author to put down his thoughts on the topic. However, if you take the information from a book, and credit it.. there isn't a problem... so if the notes are posted with the professors name attached to them (ie: Class: blah, Taught by Professor: Somebody) then there should be no argument at all. As well, what's to stop students from going into a chat room and talking about the class? So what if the notes are posted somewhere... that means that whoever is talking about the subject, they all have the same reference material.

Anyways, I've probably been rambling (I just think this is stupid on the Prof's side) so let me just say one more thing...

Paying for schooling isn't easy... I really don't blame students for trying to get some money for something that they are (or should be) doing anyways.
