IF the cop is less than polite make sure you get that id and file a complaint. Psychology studies have shown that cops are in a position of power that is very easy to abuse, you need to remind them that you are watching.

Like the time we sent our project leader to the Europe branch for one afternoon (everyone needed his expertise). 1. Abundant natural resources
Yeah, but we are not alone in that. For that matter, other countries could have bought those resources and made something with them.

2 Slavery, followed by cheap immigrant labour.
Slavery was strictly in the south. Not as useful a you might think, slaves eat year round, and were used mostly for farm work. Slavery was illegal on about half the land, the half that most of the population lived on. By the time the US was really making the big ecconomic gains slavery was illegal
Immigrant labour. Yes, but they did better themselves and their kids while working hard. We don't have it today, yet the US is still a dominate global power. Not that cheap labour isn't helpful, but it isn't enough.

    3. A large population.
Not compared to Europe, China, or India. The first had the education to make something of their lives (I'm not sure how China and India fared historicly), and while they could have had cheap labour, since most of the immigrants came from there. There are still many areas on earth that can claim a larger population.

    4. Good education.
Europe had it, or at least could have. So could most countries. I'm not sure if they did, but if so why wasn't it enough? If not, why not?

    5. Capitalism
So why is everyone so willing to not use it? I agree it is a major factor. It is also a major reason that we still have a work ethic, you can get ahead if you work hard, if you don't work hard you won't.

    6. A government willing to use its muscle (military and economic) to get its way.
When? You didn't see that until Vietinam, (maybe Korea) which happened well after the US was a global power. The US was dragged into both world wars, at the start of each we wanted nothing to do with them. Don't bring up the "Spanish-American war" which wasn't really a war, and the Spanish were still a major power at that time, and if they had tried over the years should have been a bigger power.

I tried, I had the replacement, but the downturn lasted more than 6 months and caught me more than once.

I sometimes wish I hasn't bought a house, I could have spent my money getting to Europe, and live there for a few months and take in some culture. (though I'm not sure if that would get me a job when I got back, and I'd need one badly when I got back) Still, that is life, you take your chances and do the best you can.

Equal temperment isn't necessarily a godsend for the piano. Many old organs are not equal tempered, and Bach relyed on that for some of his masterpieces. However you must be aware of what is going on when you aren't in equal temperment and avoid the bad keys.

  13. Re:Cool, but on The Self-Tuning Guitar · · Score: 1

Very few people who tune by ear get the same tuning. Electronic tuners are sometimes better called electronic arbitrators, because when two guys start arguing about tuning (I've see this happen) you pull out the electronic device and use that as a compromise that will work.

If there is only one person who cares about tuning, give him your insterment, let him tune by ear and enjoy it. There are compromises in tuning, and the by ear guy normally has a different compromise in mind.

The only way to get a perfect tuning is to have one string for each note, but remember that a note flat is not the same as the next note down sharp, making for 30+ strings in one scale, something few could deal with. (unless you have a fretless insterment in which case you can do these sharps and flats by ear)

  14. Re:I wonder... on The Self-Tuning Guitar · · Score: 2, Informative

Before you say tuning is a science you need to learn something about tuning. The correct tuning is NOT based on math, where you have A at 440 double it for the next A, and then divide that interval into 12 and put each note in its place based on the division. Well it is, we call it standard temperment (or even temperment), and it is the most common temperment in use today. However Standard temperment is always wrong. We use it because it sounds okay everywhere and we have trained our ears to accept it. True musicians (of which I am not) play with temperment, which allows them to play one chord that is perfect, but it comes at the expensive of some other chord being so wrong even a tone deaf person won't like it. There are many other temperments, with various advantages and disadvantages.

Bach's well tempered organ was written to show off how a chord sounds different in different keys, and doesn't sound the same on with standard temperment.

This is far more complex than a simple science. Stick with standard temperments and your right, it is a science, but are true artist knows and [sometimes] uses other temperments when they are better. That is art.
